To Do Justice and
To Love Kindness and
To Walk Humbly With Your God.Micah 6:8
Fall 2014 Generosity Campaign–Versailles Presbyterian Church
“Those who love the Word of the Lord are
like trees planted by streams of water, which
bear fruit at just the right time and whose
leaves don’t fade. Whatever they do
succeeds.”
A lot of people will tell you that fall is their favorite season: they like the
cooler weather; appreciate the beauty of the turning leaves; savor the
smells of pumpkin, hay, and bonfires; thrill to the sound of a roaring
crowd at a college football game; and eagerly anticipate the approaching
holidays. Those who dislike fall might mention the start of school and
the approaching winter, and, unfortunately, a few might even mention
the stewardship campaign at church!
With all due respect to the Biblical concept of stewardship, the word
doesn’t mean much to most of us, as it is not used in everyday
conversation. The dictionary definition of stewardship is the “careful
and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.”
Makes sense – we care for our church home – but the term is rather
passive and dull, and brings to mind cleaning and fixing things.
If we are parents, we understand that we are expected to care for our
children responsibly – to feed and shelter them and to send them to
school with the expectation that they will one day be able to provide for
their children – but we also know that we want more. We want to raise
children who are kind and good, who are cheerful givers and who strive
to make a difference. As Christians, we want much the same thing:
through our love and generosity, we want to make a positive impact on
the world around us. We want to keep our brick and mortar in good
shape, but we are compelled to care for people more. This is, after all,
our Christian calling.
Claire Pinkston: “VPC feels like family to
me. Every one there is very friendly. I like it
when I get to do things like greet and collect
offering.”
Cayce Jones: “I love church. It’s like a
home and everyone there is my family.”
The production and mai ling costs of th is booklet have been generously
donated. Thank you to the Stewardship Task group for their volunteer
hours: Mike McCall (production) , Mar y Pier son , (desi gn) , Laura
Dake, Mel is sa Sevier, and Linder Jaeckel s (edit orial suppor t), Jerr y
Sevier and Loi s Gaines ( f inancial presentation).

A Note from
MelissaVersailles Presbyterian
Church is a reflection of you:
your values; your hopes; your
caring attitude toward friend and
neighbor (both those close by and
those a world away); your
worship.
Your faithful giving of
finances, service and talent—out
of your gratitude—is what makes
VPC successful, and enables the
writing of the next chapter of our
church’s future. I, like you, am
grateful to be a small part in this
great and ongoing story.
Melissa Bane Sevier,
Pastor
So could we turn the
traditional steward -
ship campaign into
something more? How
about a campaign of
generosity? Generosity
is defined as “the
quality of being kind,
understanding and
unselfish.” Its
synonyms include
bigheartedness,
bountifulness,
openhandedness and
openheartedness.
Wow! As we manage
and care for our church home (the stewardship part), we are at the same
time using that asset to share the Good News, to welcome new faces,
and to care for those – near and far – who need our assistance (the
generosity part!).
The theme for our fall campaign is “Growing Our Vision.” Based on
VPC’s vision statement (Micah 6:8): “And what does the Lord require of
you? To do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God,”
the pages that follow describe how your generosity serves the needs of
our church family and provides outreach to others in need in our
community, our country and our world.
As we look toward 2015, and the spirit of generosity, let’s envision new
possibilities for Versailles Presbyterian Church and its members. Let’s
build on existing ministries and boldly establish new ones. Let’s make a
difference together.

s Christians and members of this church family, we
are challenged to be Christ’s hands and feet by
working in our community and in the world for
peace, justice, freedom and human fulfillment. On the local
level, your gifts improve the lives of those in our community
who are in need of food, clothing and shelter. On the national
and international level, your gifts support our denomination’s
activities to bring peace and justice in our world and aid those
who are suffering. Here in our church, your gifts are used to
teach and nurture children in the stories of the Bible and
enrich the faith of adults through the teachings of Jesus and
the practices of our faith. Each of these endeavors is, in turn,
supported by a church that is managed efficiently and reliably
by your gifts. With your help, both financial and the gift of
compassion, we live our vision.

s Christians and members of this church family, it
is our joy to welcome all who come through our
doors to worship, learn and share the sacraments.
We care for each other and reach out to our community with
kind words, helping hands and warm embraces. Your gifts meet
these needs in our church family and others in our community.
It is through your gifts that this church cares for people who
are facing life’s most joyous and difficult transitions by
providing pastoral support and congregational resources. As a
church family, we work together to keep our church home safe
and inviting. As in all homes we must keep the building
heated, cooled, properly maintained and protected from risk.
Your gifts preserve and protect the legacy handed down to us.
Those who came before have given us a heritage rich with a
beautiful building in an even more beautiful location. This
legacy is testament to their desire to do justice, love kindness
and walk humbly with God. With your help, both financial
and the gift of Christian love, we live our vision.
