October 4, 2015 What does God require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. — Micah 6:8 Pullen’s Big Decision, Made with Faith, Hope and Vision On September 20 our congregation voted overwhelmingly (96% of those voting) to purchase the property behind us. I want to commend you and recognize the faith you’ve shown in taking this big leap into the future as a group. Making deci- sions as a group is hard. And trusting your vision (and finan- cial commitment) in the hands of others is, too. These are acts of faith – faith in the vision of Pullen, faith in each other, faith in the value of our role in the larger Raleigh community and faith in a future that is good and worth investing in. By now, most of you know the Pullen story with the 112 Cox Avenue property. No doubt you have heard the tales of the two times before now when the congregation voted to not buy the property—in 1990 and again in 2007. You proba- bly have also heard of the Friends of Pullen—those coura- geous souls who formed an LLC in 2007 and purchased the property as a way to extend Pullen’s time frame of consider- ing the church’s need for the property. Now that we are on this side of our latest decision, I have several reflections. First, I am proud of the way our congregation made this latest decision. The leadership did a remarkable job of shep- herding the process with timely and pertinent information. At our congregational meetings to discuss the purchase, people listened and shared with respect. There was an openness to questions asked and ideas shared. And overall, there was a sweet spirit that accompanied the process. Have you ever noticed how things seem to go so much better when there is a spirit of respect? Second, I think the difference this time has everything to do with timing. NOW, was the right time for our congre- gation to make this purchase. I don’t believe that the previous two decisions to not buy the property were bad or wrong decisions. The people who were Pullen Church at that time made the best decisions they could make. It doesn’t mean they were right or wrong. It simply means they made a deci- sion given where they were at the time and how they dis- cerned the needs of Pullen at that moment in history. Life is like that, ever changing with the changing of time. Most of the decisions we make are neither right nor wrong, they are simply decisions we make based on where we are in our lives and what our needs are at the time of the decision. Third, I strongly feel that our “yes” vote is an affirma- tion of the hope we have for our church now and for the future. In voting to purchase 112 Cox Avenue property, we affirmed a vision and a hope for our future. This vote was not a vote to simply acquire more for the purposes of having more. It was not a vote to say we want to be bigger, or that we believe that bigger necessarily means better. It was an af- firmation of our desire to serve our community, to be a good neighbor, to make sure our witness to God’s radical love and inclusiveness remains at 1801 Hillsborough Street for the generations of people who will walk through our front and back doors for the next one hundred and thirty years. There is something to be said for having a vision in life and for making decisions based in hope and not fear. I feel like our community made this latest decision with a vision (that of serving our community) and with hope for our future. And so I say to you, well done people of Pullen. In a sweet spirit of respect, at this very moment in our life togeth- er, we chose a future rooted in hope. Well done, well done! Mark your Calendar NOW—Sunday, October 25 On Sunday, October 25 at 3 PM we will gather at Temple Beth Or to tell the story of our sister-church relationship, discover the friendships that exist now within our two con- gregations, and make new friendships as we fellowship with one another. Rabbi Lucy Dinner and I will share our journey of becoming colleagues and friends. We will talk about the justice work we are doing together and lead a conversation on how Temple Beth Or and Pullen might deepen their sister- church relationship. This is an important event in the life of our church so I encourage your participation. The afternoon is planned as an intergenerational event with activities and childcare for chil- dren. Youth are also encouraged to participate and share about the relationships built between Pullen and Temple Beth Or youth through the In Our Own Back Yard summer pro- gram. Pullen’s Big Decision, Made with Faith, Hope and Vision

On September 20 our congregation voted overwhelmingly (96% of those voting) to purchase the property behind us. I want to commend you and recognize the faith you’ve shown in taking this big leap into the future as a group. Making deci-sions as a group is hard. And trusting your vision (and finan-cial commitment) in the hands of others is, too.

You proba-bly have also heard of the Friends of Pullen—those coura-geous souls who formed an LLC in 2007 and purchased the property as a way to extend Pullen’s time frame of consider-ing the church’s need for the property. Now that we are on this side of our latest decision, I have several reflections.

First, I am proud of the way our congregation made this latest decision. The leadership did a remarkable job of shep-herding the process with timely and pertinent information.

NOW, was the right time for our congre-gation to make this purchase. I don’t believe that the previous two decisions to not buy the property were bad or wrong decisions. The people who were Pullen Church at that time made the best decisions they could make. It doesn’t mean they were right or wrong. It simply means they made a deci-sion given where they were at the time and how they dis-cerned the needs of Pullen at that moment in history. Life is like that, ever changing with the changing of time. Most of the decisions we make are neither right nor wrong, they are simply decisions we make based on where we are in our lives and what our needs are at the time of the decision.

Third, I strongly feel that our “yes” vote is an affirma-tion of the hope we have for our church now and for the future. In voting to purchase 112 Cox Avenue property, we

affirmed a vision and a hope for our future. This vote was not a vote to simply acquire more for the purposes of having more. It was not a vote to say we want to be bigger, or that we believe that bigger necessarily means better. It was an af-firmation of our desire to serve our community, to be a good neighbor, to make sure our witness to God’s radical love and inclusiveness remains at 1801 Hillsborough Street for the generations of people who will walk through our front and back doors for the next one hundred and thirty years. There is something to be said for having a vision in life and for making decisions based in hope and not fear. I feel like our community made this latest decision with a vision (that of serving our community) and with hope for our future.

And so I say to you, well done people of Pullen. In a sweet spirit of respect, at this very moment in our life togeth-er, we chose a future rooted in hope. Well done, well done!

Wednesday Activities in October

Participating in Wednesday night activities is one of the best ways to get to know Pullenites. We hope you’ll join us for our weekly dinner and program activities for all ages.

Dinner is served from 5:15—6 PM. The cost of the meal is $6 for youth and adults and $3 for children K-5th Grade. The family maximum is $20. If the cost of these meals is a hardship, please contact one of the ministers.

Following dinner each week, we share announcements, joys and concerns, followed by adult programming at 6:30. The children leave for their activities at 6 PM and youth hang out in the youth room starting at 5:15 PM. They can eat with the adults or bring their own. All programs end at 7:30 PM.

October 7 Worship in the Round: Our Worship in the Round theme is “The Gift of Hospitality.” Roundtable Ministry volunteers offer a glimpse into this important Pullen outreach as we explore the theme through scripture, music, poetry and storytelling. Join us for Worship in the Round where we encounter God and one another face to face.

October 14 & 21 Considering Baptism (Part 1 & 2):

Growing out of questions regarding baptism by immersion that have been raised by our youth, the Deacons will lead a two-part con-versation about this historic Baptist ordi-nance – why we do it, how we do it and what it means for those who are baptized and for our Pullen community.

October 28 GA’s, RA’s and Sword Drills: A Trip Down the SBC Memory Lane: On this Wednesday evening before Halloween when the kids do their scary activities, the adults are going to revisit the past – or if you didn’t grow up in a Southern Baptist Convention church – marvel at the “interesting” past of other Pullenites. We’ll have a sword drill, see photos of Pullenites in their Girls’ Auxiliary regalia and hear the theme song of the Royal Ambassadors. Join us for an evening of laughter and good memories.

We hope you’ll make time to be with us on Wednesdays for food, fellowship and learning together.

“Wisdom Circles” Gathering in October

Pullenites who are 80 or older are invited to one of three “Wisdom Circles.” This is an opportunity for us to glean the wisdom of our elders to share with the congregation. Please join one of these dates from 10-11:30 AM: October 8, Glenaire in Cary; October 15, Springmoor in Raleigh; or October 20, Finlator Hall at Pullen. Please RSVP at 919-828-0897 or [email protected].

Ahead of time, please ponder what you learned about life (personally and at Pullen) and come ready to share. When have you or when has the church not done things as well as you would have liked, and what did you learn from this? When did you/we get it right?

October 18 Congregational Meeting The Coordinating Council invites you to the second of three regularly scheduled church business meetings per Article IX of our church constitu-tion. This meeting will take place on October 18 at 2 PM in Finlator Hall. At this meeting, the main topic for consideration will be the church budget presented by the Finance Committee. There may be other matters for information presented as well.

As with all Pullen business meetings, only members of Pullen may cast votes on motions, though all attendees are welcome to participate in the discussion. We look forward to your thoughtful consideration of this most important matter, and we will welcome your insight as we seek to work to-gether to support the work and ministry of our church.

Earth Transformed with Music! A Festival of Worship Song with Jann Aldredge-Clanton—Sunday, November 8

Pullen friend, the-ologian and hymn writer, Jann Al-dredge-Clanton, will be our guest for worship on November 8, when the Chancel Choir and Pullen Orchestra lead the congregation in a festival of inclusive hymns and wor-ship songs. The service music on

this day will come from “Earth Transformed with Music!,” a new hymnal collaboration by Jann and myself.

Some of the hymns and worship songs from the new work will be familiar to the Pullen congre-gation (“She Lives!,” “Mystery Divine,” “We Come Rejoicing Here Today,” “Follow Her Peaceful Ways,” and a communion song by Nancy Petty, “As We Come to the Table of Love”).

Partnering with Jann through the years has supported our worship and min-istries in authentic and progres-sive ways. The new collection expresses justice issues like ra-cial equality, gender equality, marriage equality, economic justice, care of creation, and interfaith collaboration.

Following the hymn festi-val service all will be invited to lunch and conversation with Jann in Finlator Hall. The hymnal and other publi-cations by Jann including Pullen’s CD recording of selections from her first hymnal and her newest book, “She Lives!,” will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Pul-len Music Ministry.

See the Film— Ferguson: A Report from Occupied Territory After worship on Sunday, November 1, we will provide lunch and an opportunity to see the film Ferguson: A Report from Occupied Territory. In this documentary, Fusion’s Tim Pool examines the problem of justice in and around Ferguson. Following the 53-minute film, Barbara Smalley McMahan will lead a discussion of the film. Bar-bara accompanied a group from the Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America—Bautistas por la Paz—when they traveled to Ferguson in August and was arrested there.

Plan to join us for this important discussion on All Saints’ Day.

Pullen volunteers park their vehicles with deco-rated trunks in the church parking lot and hand out prizes or candy to the children who come looking for a treat.
