The premise behind an“unconference” is simple:put smart people together, and their individual ideas will turn into something larger. This format inspired theEnvision Hutch Unconference.

Thirty-two Reno County citizens started

the day by self-organizing into seven

groups around community issues.

They spent the morning brainstorming

ideas and the afternoon developing the

most promising concept. By 5 p.m., each

group had devised a small experimental

project to prove that the concept would

be worth pursuing further. Those

experiments became funded grants.

Pyle Park Event Demonstrates Need for PlaygroundWhen brainstorming ideas for the issue of “outdoor recreation opportunities,” participants immediately thought of children in the East Ave. A neighborhood.

“I’m tired of watching kids play in parking lots and alleys with no toys,” said Amy Raigoza, unconference participant and Avenue A resident. “Parks and schools within walking distance require many kids to cross railroad tracks or walk onstreets without sidewalks.”

Together the group developed the idea of a pop-up play area in George Pyle Park, to be held April 11. “We had liability restrictions related to playground equipment, so we set-up games and sports for the kids to play,” she said. “In the end the balls and games were given away to the children, so they would have them to playwith going forward.”

Over 250 people attended, resulting in a board filled with signatures in supportof a neighborhood park.

Through 2016, allendowed gifts to theFund for Hutchinson may be matched 50% by the Kansas Health Foundation.

Flexibility to address ever-changing needsOur founders passionately advocated for a community endowment of unrestricted funds that could be directed to the most pressing issues of the time. The Fund for Hutchinson—our largest unrestricted fund—grants about $150,000 annually to organizations serving Reno County, yet we receive around $500,000 in requests. The needs are indeed greater than our ability to fund them.

Dick Dillon saw the possibility of the Fund for Hutchinson reaching $15-$20 million by 2030. Based on this vision, the Foundation has set two goals for the Fund for Hutchinson: $3 million by 2017 and $20 million by 2030. At $20 million, the Fund for Hutchinson would grant $1 million annually, significantly increasing our capacity to meet the community’s needs.

These goals are bold, but we believe it can happen with your help.

What is the Fund for Hutchinson?Truly transforming Reno County, the Fund for Hutchinson is a “community savings account” that allows our community to take risks on new projects, address deep and daunting issues, and try innovative solutions. The annual grant application process represents the one time of year that the Foundation can significantly respond to both new and pressing needs.

Some of the grants are small but mighty, while others are large and far-reaching. Each, though, represents an innovative approach or collaboration, a new efficiency for an established organization, a critical need that requires “just-in-time” funding, or an opportunity that needs just that bit of local support to leverage great resourcesfor our community.

For 85 years Hutchinson High School students have strived for the Young American Award, the school’s most prestigious prize. Now,with the Oswald family’s endowed fund for the award, it’s certain to continue for every graduating class in the future.

The award began in 1929 when A. Lewis Oswald, class of 1917, saw an opportunity to inspire the student body by honoring one student who represented the ideal young American. In those first years, he recruited his law partner William Mitchell to help sponsor the award. “It used to be the only award at HHS,” said Oswald’s granddaughter Patsy Lovett, who now guides the selection process. “He wanted the students, faculty, and alumni to decide who in the senior class wasbest of the best—in character, academics, activities, everything they did.”

Oswald’s sons John and Charles, along with their extended families, continued the tradition after he passed away, eventually making the award permanent through an endowment housed at Hutchinson Community Foundation. It was established with an initial gift from the Oswald Family Foundation, and a portion of Liz and John Oswald’s estate gift will round out the fund. Another portion of their gift will create the Liz & John Oswald Fund for Hutchinson, which will be pooled to help make Fund for Hutchinson grants each year.

“They get a mammoth trophy and a personal check for $1,000 to spend any way they choose,” said Patsy. “That way it’s really an award rather than a scholarship.”

“I’m always impressed to see the high quality of kids at Hutch High,” said Liz. “Most of them go on to big time things, and many of them are leaders here in our community today.”

Capturing Matching Fundsto Reach $900,000 GoalFor David Dick, Buhler Community Foundation board chairman, it’s unthinkable to let free money slip through Buhler’s hands.

“Right now we have a unique chance to capture matching funds from the Kansas Health Foundation,” he said. “With that 50 percent match, we can earn an additional $200,000 for our community—and that’s significant. It’s basically free money, so we’d be crazy to let it go.”

Reaching the $900,000 goal means an average payout of more than $45,000 per year in grants. “Right now we’re only able to give about $5,000 per year,” said Tina Yutzy, Buhler Community Foundation coordinator. “Imagine the possibilities with so much more money available for projects like the Wellness Center.”

Over the past six months, Foundation board members have been meeting with community members to ask for 3-year pledges. The Foundation is hoping to achieve $100,000 in pledges for each year, and then make up the remaining $100,000 through ad hoc donations.

That’s why this past year at the Hutchinson Community Foundation has been exhilarating for me. It started last September, when we kicked off Envision Hutch with agreat program at The FOX Theatre, launching a listening tour during which we invited Reno Countians to share their hopes and dreams for a better place to live. It continued with the Unconference in March, a unique event that brought doers into a space on a Saturday to brainstorm projects to make some of these ideas reality. In the room that day were many people I didn’t know. I was energized by the people who showed up with various individual passions. We actually put some grant money on the table and let the Unconference participants decide which projects should get grants.

This ideas-to-action stage we are in is the theme of this year’s annual report, which you hold in your hands. As we move from ideas to planning to doing, we ask you to join us. The vision statement for the Hutchinson Community Foundation, which our board of directors reaffirmed this year, is as follows: “A thriving community where dreams are fulfilled through the power of philanthropy.” We’ve been dreaming. Now we want to get to the fulfilling part.

For those who participated in the Envision Hutch process and shared dreams and ideas, we thank you. And for your past support in the form of giving to the community foundation, we thank you. As we move forward, I hope you will feel gratified to know that giving to the community foundation isn’t just about fundraising but about fulfilling our dreams for Hutchinson and Reno County. Whether you contribute with your financial gifts or with your time and talent, you are making a difference.
