Message

As Chairman of Shri Banarsidas Chandiwala Sewa Smarak Trust Society, I wish to offer my sincerefelicitation to the Janki Devi Memorial College, its Staff and its Students on the occasion of its AnnualDay.The College has come a long way and is today one of the best Women Colleges of Delhi. It is a matter ofgreat pride to me personally and to my Trust for the achievements made by the College. I sincerelyhope that the progress the College is making will continue in the coming years. With best wishes for the future,Autar Krishna

Founder of the collegeShri Brij Krishan Chandiwala, the founder of Janki Devi Memorial College was born in 1900 in a reputedfamily. As the third son of a flourishing silver merchant's family, there were no domestic pressures onhim to join the family business. After the early demise of his wife, he joined the freedom movement ledby Gandhiji. His mother's entreaties to remarry fell on deaf ears. Brij Krishanji became a true disciple ofGandhiji. He went to jail several times during the freedom movement. When Gandhiji started theagitation against the Salt Law, Brij Krishanji took an oath to give up salt and sugar for life. He was forcedto break this vow in the last days of his life on health grounds. At Gandhiji's behest he had a prayer temple built in a Harijan Colony. He started the Delhi chapter of theBharat Sewak Samaj, an organization for the upliftment of the downtrodden. In 1959, Shri VKRV Rao, the then Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University appealed to the wealthyphilanthropists of the city to come forward to open girls colleges in Delhi. It was then, that Brij Krishanjiwho had no children donated all his inherited wealth to the family trust Shri Banarsidas ChandiwalaSewa Smarak Society which in turn funded the establishment of Janki Devi Memorial College in memoryof his late mother Smt. Janki Devi. Till his very end this great visionary remained our mentor and guide.Today Brij Krishanji is remembered for his social service and closeness to Gandhiji. When NathuramGodse fired that fatal shot, Bapu fell backward into the arms of Brij Krishanji who was sitting rightbehind him.

THE COLLEGEJanki Devi Memorial College is one of the most prestigious institutions of the Delhi University.Situated in the New Delhi ridge in idyllic surroundings with its lush green lawns and imposing building, the college was founded in 1959 by the famous Gandhian Shri Brij Krishan Chandiwala in memory of hismother Smt. Janki Devi. The college has been imparting quality education to girls for over five decades. In keeping with thechanging global scenario over the years we at JDMC have also restructured our academic format into

the Semester mode from 2011 onwards and FYUP from 2013 onwards. This is reflected in both thecurriculum and the co-curricular activities that make up the college template. We offer education in liberal arts, social sciences and commerce. We are also ranked third in academicexcellence at Delhi University in the field of Commerce. We also impart education in areas such as OfficeManagement and Secretarial Practice, Advertising, Sales Promotion and Sales Management. The collegeoffers courses on a short-term basis. We continue with our a course on Peace and Conflict Resolution, which was started in in 2011.With almost one lakh books and around 82 journals, JDMC prides itself inhaving a fully automated and well stocked library, which is also a resource centre for women's studies. In collaboration with the University of Sunderland, UK and the WSDC, Delhi University, the centreprovides short-term modules on women's studies.JDM has, since its conception, dedicated itself to the cause of women's empowerment. Dr. InduAnand, the Principal believes in providing excellent academic and entrepreneuial opportunities to thestudents. In keeping with her vision,, in September 2013, after having been approached by theNetherlands Government, Dr.Anand hosted a delegation from the Netherlands consisting of variousministers including Ms.Lillian Ploumen, the Trade Minister This preliminary meeting led in November2013, to the signing of a MOU between the Dutch Government and Dr.Anand which proposed apartnership between the college and the Nethrelands government for the empowering of the collegestudents by imparting them with entrepreneurial skills. This proposal was formally inaugurated by theAmbassador of the Netherland, His Excellency Alphonso Stoelinga on the 5th of February ,2014.Theprogramme is being conducted by the ECORYS,the knowledge partner of the Netherlands government.Besides providing students with a motivational environment, the office block, union room, spacious staffroom, individual departmental rooms, seminar hall, committee room, new computer labs, the sportsinfrastructure, the large and modern cafeteria and the open air auditorium are some of the facilities thatcreate a holistic environment both for staff and students to pursue their academic and extra academicinterests. The Women's Development Centre, National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme and the GandhiStudy Circle provide an opportunity to our students to engage with social issues like legal literacy, women's health and empowerment and adult education. The two thousand strong student communityand a hundred and twenty faculty members and the Principal Dr. Indu Anand have reasons to be proudof their achievements in several areas.Besides bagging university positions in different disciplines every year, the college also strikes a finebalance between the academic and co-curricular. Thus tutorials, preceptorials and presentations underthe FYUP are taken very seriously in our college, along with the tutor-ward/contact/counsellingprogrammes which help keep a finger on the pulse of the students. The Physical Education Department adds trophies to the college shelves annually. The department isextremely active and provides training in all the sports. The Annual Inter-college Festival 'Symphony' andthe Debating, Drama, Music, Film and Environment Clubs offer a wide forum for the expression of thecreativity and talents of the students. Every department also has its own students association. Our college also has the distinction of being one of the few to have a disabled friendly builtenvironment, with ramps and toilets and newly built lift, that cater to specific needs as well as anassistance system for the visually challenged students' and faculty.

Our college gardens never fail to fetch admiring glances from visitors and prizes at the various annualflower shows in the city. It is worth mentioning at this point, that ours was the first college to install arain water harvesting system which has been rated as one of the best in Delhi by the Centre for Scienceand Environment and has won the Chief Ministers prize for Institutional Rain Water Harvesting. In keeping with our mission of recognizing our responsibility towards the environment, the college hasan active environment programme which covers rain water harvesting, recycling, composting, solarlighting, CFL conversion, and campaigning for a smoke free zone. In addition to the above, the Janki DeviVocational Centre offers full and part time courses in areas such as Home Management, Cookery,Textile, Fashion Designing and Commercial Art.At Janki Devi Memorial College, we provide students every opportunity to express themselves. Theannual college magazine Janki is a crucial avenue for the expression of their creative abilities, opinionsand perceptions of various issues. The college vision is to create complete citizens by imparting holistic education.

Her message to the students is to remember that each one of them has a unique talent whichshould be pursued. Violence against women, she reiterates, emanates from their inherently subordinategender status in patriarchy, thus the students should have a balanced perspective on gender dynamicsso that relationship between men and women is not competitive but complementary which willdefinitely contribute to National solidarity. She is dedicated to giving the society intelligent, informed, socially responsible, independent and confident women who take pride in their cultural heritage.
