The mission of the Lloyd Center is to instill a life-long respect and affection for nature in citizens of all ages through research and education; to advance a scientific and public

understanding of our coastal ecosystems and the need to protect them; and to promote a legacy of natural diversity largely in, but not restricted to, the coastal environments

of southeastern New England.

A Message from the Chair of the Board and the Executive Director

As you read through the pages of this report, we hope you are struck, as we are, by the extraordinary story it tells…

of remarkable work being accomplished by a dedicated staff, a talented board of directors, and a band of enthusiastic

volunteers.

With continued economic pressures foreshadowing tightened school budgets and even further cuts in charitable support,

we found ourselves, at the start of the year, facing the prospect of a budget shortfall and, consequently, the very real

possibility of having to cut-back on program services.

However, thanks to the generosity of our members and supporters, the Lloyd Center showed remarkable resilience in

the face of this challenging climate. Together with many of you, we pulled up our socks, put our shoulders to the wheel,

and managed, not only to increase the number of children who were given the chance to reconnect with nature, but

strengthened the research we conducted on the threatened species and wildlife habitats of southeastern New England.

What is being accomplished here is both relevant and far-reaching. We are grateful to so many who have made the story

of 2010 come true and we thank you for being part of an organization that is truly changing lives.

L L O Y D C E N T E R F O R T H E E N V I R O N M E N T Protecting nature through research and education

The past three decades have seen the Lloyd Center for the Environment grow from a small environmental “studies” organization to a

dynamic membership-supported institution, whose research and education services are increasingly sought by educators, government

agencies and citizens throughout New England.

Founded in 1978 and situated with its headquarters and spectacular nature preserve overlooking the scenic Slocum River estuary in south-

eastern Massachusetts, the Lloyd Center has achieved a well earned reputation for excellence in environmental research and education.

Through its innovative outreach programs, it has established itself as a highly regarded leader in the ongoing effort to raise awareness of

the area’s fragile coastal resources and the importance of protecting them.

At its 55-acre nature preserve, comprising pristine salt marsh, maritime forest and undisturbed wetlands, in one of the most unspoiled

reaches of Dartmouth, the Visitor Center is open from 10 to 4, Tuesday through Saturday (plus Sundays, June-September), free of charge.

Here, aquarium exhibits offer close-up views of live freshwater and saltwater species of fish and other marine critters. The Visitor Center

is also home to a fascinating collection of live local reptiles, many representing endangered species, being “head-started” and readied for

release back into their natural environment. At the always-popular touch-tank, youngsters learn the hands-on joy of socializing with gentle

spider crabs, elusive minnows, sea stars, whelks, hermit crabs, periwinkles and mussels.

The current “Raptor-in-Residence” is a majestic Red-shouldered Hawk, discovered permanently disabled in near-by woods, rescued by

Lloyd Center naturalists and nursed back to health. Although not here as an “exhibit”, this magnificent bird of prey, having been painstak-

ingly “socialized” by members of our teaching staff, is now being introduced to thousands of wide-eyed children, both in their classrooms

and here at our nature preserve. To these eager learners, it has come to represent one of the true wonders of nature.

The top-floor Osprey Room Observatory, with its magnificent views of the Elizabeth Islands and Buzzards Bay, has been designated by the

Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs as one of the Commonwealth’s top-fifteen “Special Places”. Through telescopes

there, one can get a bird’s-eye view of formerly endangered Ospreys, and their fledging chicks, nesting on platforms erected by members

of the Center’s research staff.

Trails are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

Since its founding, the Lloyd Center has focused its research activities on assessing and documenting the distribution and ecology of the

natural resources of southeastern New England.

In 2010, the Lloyd Center continued both pre- and post-restoration monitoring of a number of local salt marshes. Collaborating with Tufts

University, the Lloyd Center completed its 6th year as the Buzzards Bay coordinator of the Seabird Stranding Network, documenting in-

stances of seabird mortality and live-bird activity on the western shoreline of Buzzards Bay. Lloyd Center scientists conducted rare-species

habitat assessments on Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, and in a number of other nearby localities. The Center also gathered baseline data

on the impacts of widespread aerial spraying for mosquitoes which took place in August. Focusing on species listed in the Massachusetts

Endangered Species Act, members of the Center’s research staff conducted comprehensive Lepidoptera inventories for the Commonwealth

of Massachusetts (under its Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program), the Cape Cod Air Force Station and the Town of South

Hadley. The Center continued its collaboration with Martha’s Vineyard conservation agencies, and produced rare-habitat assessments for

a growing number of private landowners.

In addition to its continuing work in protecting endangered Least Terns and Diamondback Terrapins on the Commonwealth’s Division

of Conservation and Recreation beaches in Bristol County, 2010 saw the Center complete its 25th year of monitoring and protecting the

federally-listed (as “endangered”) Piping Plovers.

E N V I R O N M E N T A L E D U C A T I O N

The Lloyd Center continues to provide an increasing number of unique hands-on science programs for schoolchildren and adolescents in

over thirty different New England cities and towns, at levels ranging from kindergarten through college.

In 2010, the Lloyd Center worked with over 50 public elementary and middle schools in the region, visiting a growing number of the stu-

dents on a regular basis to teach interactive lessons on relevant and critically important environmental issues. Two of the curriculum-based

offerings, Feathery Focus (an ornithology program specially created for the third-grade level) and Turn-the-Tide (a program dealing with

the ecosystems of local estuaries, taught on the fifth-grade level), have proven to be especially effective. All education programs are de-

signed to meet the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in Science and Technology/Engineering and in History/Social Studies.

For children ages 5-15, the Center’s Education Department annually provides over a dozen distinct summer programs designed to help

students develop a better understanding of science and a deeper appreciation for the need to protect the fragile nature of our coast. As

many as 15,000 students benefit from their participation in Lloyd Center education programs.

The Lloyd Center offers a wide variety of programs designed to engage the minds (and bodies!) of southeastern New England citizens of all

ages, expanding their understanding of the fragile nature of our coastal environment and the importance of working together to protect it.

In 2010, popular programs included canoe and kayak trips, nature walks, shore-birding expeditions, seal-watches, whale-watches, mid-

night “owl-prowls”, butterfly and moth identification workshops, as well as an annual fall rowing and paddling regatta designed to raise

awareness of the threats facing the delicate ecosystems of local estuaries. Five miles of rustic hiking-trails, open to the public every day

from dawn to dusk on the Lloyd Center’s Hardscrabble Nature Preserve in Dartmouth, MA and a broad variety of live marine animal

exhibits, complemented by programs and seminars, continue to draw a growing number of citizens, of all ages, to the Visitor Center.

In addition, outreach collaboration with partnering organizations continues to prove exceptionally effective in promoting lifestyle changes

aimed at a more sustainable use of natural resources. The Center’s unique website provides a vast amount of environmental research and

education information for those who seek it electronically.

THE ART DRIVEThis annual open studio weekend event—sponsored by Dartmouth and Westport artists—draws visitors to real-life studio environments with demonstrations of diverse and unique talents. Artists donate a portion of their proceeds to the Lloyd Center. As the artists put it, “…a way to support an organization dedicated to educatingpeople about their natural local environment, which is an inspiration to many of the artists who work and live the in the area.”

Born in London, “K. G.” was the daughter of Demarest Lloyd and Katharine Nordell Lloyd

and the last grandchild of Chicago social reformer, Henry Demarest Lloyd. In 1978, her gift

of home and land established the Lloyd Center here in memory of her mother, a summer

resident of nearby Potomska Point and life-time conservationist and lover of nature.

Over the last three decades, the institution she founded here has continued to expand

its programs and is now a driving force for environmental education and research in

southeastern New England. “K.G.” believed the Center should foster an environmental

understanding in both the future scientists of the world and anyone drawn by the natural

beauty of the region.

As we witness the consequences of environmental ignorance and indifference throughout

the world, the relevancy of Karen Lloyd’s vision becomes increasingly clear.
