BAMSI Past , Present and Future The Academic Pillar of the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute opened its doors on September 29th, 2014, with 45 students from across the archipelago. It was mandated to pro-vide technical education and training in agriculture and marine sciences. During its inaugural commencement ceremony on July 7th, 2016, 23 students received certificates and Associate Degrees in Agriculture, Marine Science and Aquaponics. To date BAMSI has graduated over 60 students with Associate of Science Degrees. It has expanded its degree offerings to include seven (7) Associate of Science Degrees in Agriculture, Aquaponics, Agribusiness, Art and Environment, Business Management, Environmental Science and Marine Science. Three (3) Associate of Applied Science Degrees in General Agriculture, Agronomy and Animal Science. In 2019 the institute graduated it first student in Environmental Science.

As enshrined in the motto of the academic division, “Feeding Minds, Growing Greatness” The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute is poised to be the premier tertiary institution for Agriculture and Marine Science here in the country and beyond. In this our fifth Commencement exercises under the theme “Feeding the Future” we are proud to celebrate the 2020 graduating class.

Stemming from their academic accomplishments, some of the graduates have furthered their education in China, Canada and the United States while others have become entrepreneurs or agricultural officers.

In the wake of these successes, the Institute has unveiled many exciting initiatives including short professional and personal development courses and certificate programs. BAMSI has trained over 600 people across the archipelago through these competencies and proficiency-based courses. The future is endless as the institute continues to expand its degree and certificate offerings providing more online and distance education courses. The annual Summer Education and Enrichment Discovery Series (SEEDS) gives high school students the opportunity to explore opportunities in the various fields.

The Institute is mindful that its roots are in North Andros but covers the entire Bahamas. Its online courses and distance education connects learners throughout the islands.

BAMSI has memorandum of understanding with local as well as international universities. The Institute is registered with and our courses and programs are NAECOB approved. The future is bright for the institute as we continue to set trends in the area of science for the country. As we grow, we will introduce other much needed degrees in Forestry, Food Science and Nutrition, Veterinary Technology, Landscape and Horticulture, Farm Machinery and Mechanization and Crop Production to name a few.

Hon. Michael Pintard M.P. Minister of Agriculture & Marine Resources

As history retells the story of 2020, prominent among all the goings-on will be the record of your graduation, how you overcame the odds of online learning, social distancing and even having to don a mask to successfully complete your Associate’s Degree from the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute. I congratulate you on this outstanding accomplishment and for remaining steadfast as you finished your course with grace, focus and determination!

History will also recall, undoubtedly so, that 2020 was a phenomenal year for agriculture and its related sciences – aquaponics, hydroponics and aquaculture – and for the marine and fisheries industries. As the social and economic landscape changed due to forces beyond our control communities across The Bahamas, and the world also, turned their attention to food. We turned our attention to growing food in our backyards, to driving the sustainable production of produce at the commercial level, to instituting and implementing sustainable practices for harvesting fisheries so we could feed ourselves today while also leaving behind a wealthy yield for generations to come. These objectives were all brought forcibly to the forefront – creating opportunities, pathways, ventures for resourceful young men and women, like yourselves, equipped with training and an academic grounding which will allow them to navigate what is quickly becoming the new industry norm. This is what awaits you graduates, do not be afraid or reluctant to step into the swirling tide and grab hold of this occasion.

This is indeed an important moment for you and those who supported you. It is a moment of great pride and of awesome significance because as you step out from the sheltered confines of BAMSI, no longer students, but graduates, the world eagerly awaits your contribution. The executive director, faculty and staff of this evolving and maturing institute have poured their knowledge and years of experience into you, and they have supported you each step of the way of your journey, and now it is your responsibility to take all that they have given you and build on it.

So many opportunities await as you step out from BAMSI – whether to continue your studies to the bachelor’s degree level and beyond, to enter the workforce or begin an entrepreneurial venture – I encourage you to pursue your chosen path with passion, to be unafraid to explore those ideas that come in the middle of the night, to give it your very best effort because we are supporting you, rooting for you to win – to revolutionize our industries and transform them for the better. I look forward to seeing you flourish, seeing you take your place in our community, working to grow these sectors, and I wish you every success.

Congratulations and God bless you.

from

Hon. Jeffrey L. Lloyd, M.P. Minister of Education

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the 2020 graduates of The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI), for pursuing and completing a course of study, which plays a critical role in preparing the people of The Bahamas for self sufficiency.

The events of the past year have further solidified your cohort as a class of significance. The need for our country to reduce its reliance on imports, and heighten the productivity of agricultural and fishery products, have become even more apparent, as our country navigates through the unprecedented challenges of COVID -19.

Graduates, your theme “Feeding the Future,” reflects the essential function a BAMSI alumna will perform. The specialties you would have studied are all vital to helping The Bahamas move one step closer toward a diversified econ-omy and, as a result, a stronger economic base.

The global pandemic has shown us the importance of further tapping into the agricultural and marine industries. Our BAMSI graduates are critical to us getting this done. We can look to these graduates for the development of quality Bahamian sourced commodities from the agriculture and fishery sectors. Our graduates have been trained in the use of the latest equipment and technology to expand their proficiency, and we believe The Bahamas will benefit from these achievements.

Parents, I commend you for your support and cooperation which has played a pivotal role in making this milestone possible. I also acknowledge our community stakeholders who have partnered with BAMSI to offer internships and practical training, which further assist in ensuring our graduates are workforce ready.

Graduates, as you conclude your chapter at BAMSI, I am told that many of you have opted to continue your studies, while some of you will be entering the workforce, whatever your route, I wish you the greatest success in all of your endeavors.

Mr. Carlton Bowleg Jr., M.P.Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture &

Marine Resources

Each of you along with your classmates, can celebrate this momentous occasion, with great gratification and pride. I am sure you realize that you did not get to this point without discipline, determination, drive and dedication. These elements were the fuel on your journey through school, but now through life.

Henry Peter Brougham once said, “Education makes a people easy to lead, but difficult to drive: easy to govern, but impossible to enslave.” Graduates, use the education gained as your compass to where you go next.

“Cultivators of the earth are the most vigorous, the most independent, the most virtuous, and they are tied to their country and its

liberty by the most lasting bands.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

As you reflect over your time spent at The Bahamas Agriculture & Marine Science Institute (BAMSI), be sure to thank the persons who helped you to get thus far; parents, guardians, family, friends, administrators, teachers, support staff, and classmates. It is imperative that you express your appreciation to each of them.

With your degree now in hand, and for others, your certificate, you have successfully completed another level of your educational journey, but this does not have to be the end to you pursuing further education or accomplishing new goals.

Once again, I say Congratulations, and I wish you well on your future endeavors. Remember, with God at the center, everything falls into alignment.

God Bless.

Mr. Stephen Turnquest President & Chairman

Bahamas Agriculture & Marine Science Institute

It is with great pride and satisfaction that I congratulate this 2020 class of BAMSI graduates. Graduates, today is the first day of the rest of your lives but you have the implements and by that I mean the intellectual, scientific, practical and managerial skills to make a difference in agriculture and marine knowledge to train others.

I am confident with this wisdom and training you all have received while studying here at BAMSI, should strengthen your resolve to continue with a passion and determination to succeed. BAMSI is a bludgeoning Institute which inevitably I am sure, will become the epicenter for agriculture and particularly marine science training in this hemisphere.

In addition, you have the opportunity to expose to the world the many species of marine life from our oceans, bays and wetlands. It is my hope and expectation that all of you graduates will emerge as beacons for the new age of marine and farming pioneers for self-sufficiency and develop innovative ways to plant and harvest sustenance for the nation.

As Malcolm X remarked: Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.

You are all the pioneers and the pace setters of the future, embrace it with pride and continue to be proud, unselfish, imperious and dignified graduates of The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI). Form an alumni and remain active. God bless each of you.

Mr. Alaasis Braynen Chief Executive Officer

Bahamas Agriculture & Marine Science Institute

Congratulations to the graduating class of 2020.

As BAMSI College graduates you are joining a very elite alma mater because your training and experience are in high demand in The Bahamas. Some of you will be employed in the agriculture or marine industries which are now key sectors to diversify the economy of The Bahamas. It is also noted that you have worked extremely hard to achieve success, especially during the final term which was challenged by COVID - 19 Emergency conditions.

As students, you have been trained and equipped by well qualified and experienced lecturers and professionals in an environment which is very unique, compared to other programs in the Caribbean region. Your education included the academic schedule of sciences and you have applied that knowledge in the field. Also, your learning environment has taken place within the BAMSI organization which is responsible for building capacity, not just academically but also in research and extension services, for local producers.

Finally, you have been privileged to be taught in the Bahamas. Many of us have not had such an opportunity to be academically trained within the environment where one works. That experience in The Bahamas therefore provides you with incite and first hand knowledge on the environment where you will work. The whole academic and administrative teams along with the other staff at BAMSI have done and continues to do a tremendous work, in producing graduates of such a high caliber. Congratulations to you also. As we look forward with high expectation to the opening of the campus buildings in the near future that expectation is also shared for the future of the graduates of Class 2020.

Congratulations CLASS of 2020! I salute your achievements today!

On behalf of The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute, I wish to extend to you heartfelt congratulations on earning your degree. I am pleased to honor you and all of those who helped you reach this remarkable milestone, including your friends and family and our wonderful staff and faculty.

You are graduating in a time of global crisis as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are counting on you to lead us through a global change and feed the future. You can do it. Your time here would have prepared you for the world ahead. Our country is depending on you, as you represent our hope in the future and the success of the mission of the Institute. You are the next generation of leaders and your success in life will depend on your attitude, determination and belief in yourself. As you continue to advance in your pursuits, keep in mind the challenges others face—and strive, with your fellow graduates, to make a difference. I am confident that you will continue to be a leader of positive social change as you demonstrate a passion for learning that opens the door to a bright and exciting future. Many opportunities will present themselves, but only those prepared to seize those opportunities will experience the glory of success.

I hope you will take what you have learned at BAMSI and find your own path of service to the nation and to humanity. I look forward to seeing that path unfold in the years ahead, and we hope that you will renew your connections with this INSTITUTE and with other alumni.

Commencement is a time for celebration and recognition of a job well done. This is your moment. Please accept my best wishes for your continued success and for the journey that lies before you. Go BOARS!
