Dear Parents and Students:

This Career and Educational Planning Guide is intended to assist students as they make plans for a career that will lead to a rewarding and enjoyable future. We urge students and parents to work with the school faculty to review the information in this book in preparation for creating the student’s personal plan of study. Each year you will annually revisit the student’s personal plan of study. The personal plan of study is the student’s unique plan of study which outlines courses that align with future education and career goals. When students see the relevancy of high school course work to what they aspire to in their future, they are more apt to take school more seriously and enroll in more rigorous courses. Remember course selection is very important and schedule changes can be very difficult.

Please familiarize yourself with the abundance of information in this book and actively participate with your school and student in creating and reviewing your child’s personal plan of study. Students rank parents as the most influential people in their lives. Challenge your students to set high standards, select courses and school activities which directly help them achieve personal and career goals, work hard to achieve these goals and attend classes daily. Embrace the power of your influence and genuinely engage in educational pursuits with your child(ren). We look forward to partnering with you for a successful year. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Donna MuellerHigh School Counselor

District/Building Mission Statement

The mission of the Osage County R-III School District, in partnership with parents and

the community, is to provide all students the opportunity to reach their learning potential

in a safe and positive environment and to prepare them to achieve their lifelong goals as

responsible citizens.

Guidance Program Philosophy

The Osage R-III School district believes that the guidance program is an important and integral part of the overall educational process.

Since students develop emotionally, socially, and educationally, the guidance program must address the issue of total growth and development. Growth and learning are developmental; therefore, guidance must be developmental and sequential.

The K-12 developmental program is concerned withal students while recognizing the fact that individuals have needs that will continue to require special attention. As a result, the comprehensive guidance program is for all students and becomes developmental rather than crisis-oriented.

The guidance-counseling program plays an important role is promoting academic achievement and performance for all students. Developmental classroom activities and responsive services help build self-esteem which contributes to high academic performance and regular school attendance. Well-directed individual planning activities promote academic success for students and help prevent dropouts and promote positive career choices.

Frequently Asked Questions………

May I repeat a course for graduation credit? Most classes at Fatima can only be taken one time. There are a few exceptions to this rule, including band, choir, yearbook, etc.

What if I have a lower grade in a course than I would like to have on my transcript? You can retake a class for a higher grade, but the credit for the lower grade will be eliminated from the GPA and total credit totals.

May I be a part-time student? Fatima is not an open campus school. Students are expected to be on campus the full day. We do have a few opportunities for upperclassmen to pursue an employment opportunity and therefore leave early for this, but this is the only exception.

What happens if I fail a semester of a required full year (2 semesters) course? You will have to retake that course for the semester you failed.

May I get extra credit through summer school or correspondence courses? Fatima offers credit recovery through our A+ program. We also accept credit from any accredited high school program.

May I change my schedule at semester if I don’t like a class I am taking? Yes. Just see the counselor.

What is the number of credits needed to graduate from high school? 27.5

Do any classes which I took in junior high count toward high school credit? Algebra I taken at Fatima is the only junior high class that counts towards graduation.

Can I earn college credit while in high school? Yes. We offer dual credit classes through Lincoln University, AP credit, and articulated credits.

How do I join a club? All students are invited to join clubs at Fatima. If you are interested in joining a club you will need to talk to the advisor of the club. See the list at the end of this book.

Student Registration

If you want to play NCAA sports at a Division I or II school, you need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at eligibilitycenter.org. You should plan to register during your sophomore year of high school. If you have questions about your eligibility or the registration process, call us toll free at 877-2621492. The information below is intended to help walk you through the registration process.

Online RegistrationThe NCAA Eligibility Center has designed eligibilitycenter.org with you, the student-athlete, in mind. This is where you will find the tools and information you need to begin your college experience as a student-athlete. Allow at least 45 minutes to register completely. If you need to exit and return at a later time, you can save and exit once your account has been created. Some additional tips are listed below to help walk you through each section of the registration process.

Account CreationYou will need to provide a valid email address to create an account and begin the registration process. Be sure you provide an email address that will be active after you graduate from high school. This email should be one that you use frequently, because you may receive notices regarding your account. If you have a sibling that has previously registered, you will need to use a different email address than the one on your sibling’s account to create your new account.

About MeIn this section, you will enter your name, address, date of birth and gender.

My CourseworkEnter the name and location of the high school you currently attend. If you have attended more than one school (including summer school) during grades nine, 10, 11 or 12, you will need to list those schools as well. Be sure to include ALL schools, regardless of whether you received grades or credits. If you attended ninth grade at a junior high school located in the same school system in which you later attended high school, do not list the ninth-grade school. You must also include information about courses you may have taken through other programs, such as an online school or credit recovery program for a class you did not pass or took to improve a grade.

My SportSelect the sport(s) you plan to participate in at an NCAA Division I or II school. You will also be asked about any teams outside your high school, such as club teams you have played on, and events you have participated in during your high school career.

10

PaymentYour account will be eligible for processing once the registration fee has been paid (or submission of a fee waiver if you are eligible). You may pay online by debit, credit card or e-check. The registration fee is $75 for students in the United States, U.S. Territories and Canadian students (U.S. Territories include American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands); and $130 for all other international students. All fees are nonrefundable once you have successfully registered. If you completed a duplicate registration and paid your registration fee twice, you may be eligible for a refund of the duplicate registration fee. To receive a refund, you will need to complete and submit an NCAA refund form.

Fee WaiverYou are eligible for a waiver of the registration fee if you have received a waiver of the SAT or ACT fee. This is not the same as a U.S. state voucher. You must have an authorized high school official submit your fee waiver documentation online once you complete your registration.

ACTIn order to be eligible for an ACT fee waiver, you must meet one of these indicators of economic need:

Your family receives low-income public assistance; Your family income is at or below the Bureau of Labor Statistics Low Standard Budget; You are a ward of the state; You live in a foster home; You are homeless; You participate in free or reduced-price lunch program at school; or You participate in federally funded TRIO Program such as Upward Bound.

High School Special Programs

The high school administration realizes that an effective educational program is one that provides opportunities for student learning both within the classroom and beyond the traditional classroom and school day. These expanded opportunities are viewed as educational options to supplement the regular program.

A+ Schools ProgramThe Fatima Schools Program strives to ensure that students are prepared for and successful in life beyond high school. The A+ Schools Program provides students with continuous, progressive career information throughout the students’ years in the Osage County R-III School District. The program focuses on ensuring students have course offerings that are rigorous and relevant to the world outside the classroom that will better prepare them for their paths after high school. For Additional Information about the A+ Schools Program contact the A+ coordinator in your School or the Department of Higher Education website (www.dhe.mo.gov). The Osage County R-III student & parent A+ Handbook is available on the schools home page (www.fatimacomets.org).

Advanced PlacementAdvanced Placement tests are given every year in the spring. Students who are interested must sign up and pay for the tests in March. A reminder is given to the Advanced Placement instructor and is placed in the bulletin. At this time, Fatima High School offers classes specifically designed to help students pass the AP exam in calculus and chemistry.

Articulated CreditArticulation agreements are set up for certain career, technical or occupational courses that are offered through a postsecondary institution such as Nichols Career Center, State Fair Community College, & State Technical College of Missouri. Articulated credit is earned by successfully completing a career, technical, or occupational course with an 80% or higher. Enrollment for articulated credit must be made while the student is enrolled in the high school equivalent course. The college credit will appear on a college transcript once a student graduates high school and earns 15 hours of college credit through the post-secondary institution. There is no cost to the student for articulated credit.

Dual CreditFatima High School offers numerous dual credit classes through Lincoln University. Students who wish to take a dual credit class must meet the specific requirements for that class and the requirements for the program as a whole. Students will enroll in the program at the beginning of the semester for which they are getting credit. Payments are made directly to Lincoln University, and transcripts are issued by the university.

Credit RecoveryIf a student does not earn credit in a particular class, Fatima offers credit recovery through the A+ Learning System. Credits can be earned for most of the core classes. This is a self-paced learning system completed independently on a computer at the school. See the counselor for more information.

Career Planning

Purpose of Career Paths and Career Clusters

Career PathsCareer paths are clusters of occupations/careers grouped according to participants’ interests and talents or skills. All paths include a variety of occupations that require different levels of education and training. Thus, career paths provide a plan for all students, whatever their interests, abilities, talents, or desired levels of education. Selecting a career path provides a student with an area of FOCUS, along with FLEXIBILITY and a VARIETY of ideas to pursue. The focus of career paths is on helping students choose a career path, not a specific occupation. Selecting a career path is not a lifelong commitment; it is a place to begin focusing one’s energies. As students take different courses and learn more about themselves and careers, they will probably change career paths. Students who understand the career paths concept will be aware that there are a variety of other related possibilities if the first path no longer fits them. If different career paths become more interesting, the students can reevaluate plans, make appropriate decisions, and revise their high school plans as necessary.

Benefits Deciding on a career path can assist you in exploring your interests and preparing for your future. The intent is not for you to decide on a specific occupation for the rest of your life, but to select a career path into which you can begin directing your energies. Identifying a career path can help you in selecting school courses, activities, and part-time employment. It can also help guide your participation in job shadowing, career exploration and internships. A career path choice is not a permanent commitment. As you have new experiences, you learn new things about yourself and may decide to change career paths. If you decide on a different career path to explore, you should discuss it with your counselor and adjust your future course selections in accordance with your new career exploration.

Career Exploration AssessmentsOsage County R-III School students complete career exploration assessments starting in the 6th grade. This is a way the student can identify an initial career path choice. Counselors will then use this information to assist students in making course selections and developing a five-year plan. All students set up an account in Missouri Connections where they can complete various career/vocational inventories. Each year the students are given time to research career opportunities using this program, and they are encouraged to take various interest inventories. Students can also find the colleges that offer courses of study related to specific careers. Freshman also take the COPS career interest inventory. Career interest inventories are also included in the ACT test and the ASVAB tests given to all juniors.

CHOOSING A CAREER PATH OR CLUSTER1. Identify your interests, abilities, and talents.2. Identify the career path or cluster that relates to your interests, abilities, and talents.3. Explore occupations in those career paths or clusters.4. Decide how much education you want to receive after high school. 5. Develop a personal plan of study by selecting courses and co-curricular activities that relate to your career educational and career goal.6. If undecided regarding a career path or cluster, choose courses from different career areas to give you a better idea of your interests.AT

YOUR CHOICESAFTER HIGH SCHOOL

Some occupations do not require training prior to employment; rather additional training and skills required beyond high school are provided by the employer.

******************************************************************************************

Apprenticeship is a three to four year training program where you earn money while you learn, working on the job. You receive a license at the end of training. Examples of trades that use apprenticeship are bricklaying, jewelry making, electrical repair, etc.

******************************************************************************************

Programs at these schools are generally from one month to four years in length. Examples of vocational technical programs include practical nursing, robotics, and some areas of business.

******************************************************************************************

Community colleges offer two-year “degree” vocational training, associate degrees, or credit transfer to a college or university where you can pursue a bachelor’s degree. Most community colleges have an open enrollment policy for high school graduates and individuals with GEDs.

******************************************************************************************

A bachelor’s degree requires approximately four years of college. A master’s degree usually requires one to two years of college beyond the bachelor’s degree. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required for about 20% of the occupations in the United States. Entrance requirements depend on the desired program/major.

******************************************************************************************

Training is available for many jobs while you are enlisted. You may also receive financial assistance for college, room and board, salary, and insurance benefits. High school graduation is required. Another consideration for students would be the military academies like West Pint or University ROTC.

Fatima High SchoolSpecialty Area Program of Study Templates

“What do you want to do after high school?” That is a question that is asked of our students a multitude of times over the course of their public school education. It’s a question that is not easily answered, due to the enormous number of possible post-secondary alternatives that are currently available to our students. Technological advances and global competition have transformed the nature of both education and work. Tomorrow’s jobs will require more knowledge and training, highly developed 21st Century skills, technological skills, and more flexible workers than ever before. Our students need to be prepared for, and informed of, the reality of several job and career changes over the course of their lifetimes. They need to understand that they will have to continually update their knowledge and skills, which may require additional training and/or education.

The Osage County R-III School District offers a wide array of courses and experiences to its students. As students review course offerings and activities, we hope to guide them in choosing coursework and experiences that are relevant to their future goals.

In planning for post-secondary goals, students should start with examining where their own interests and talents lie. This can be accomplished in many different ways within the school district: researching middle and high school classes of interest, taking interest and skill inventories, participating in career fairs offered, and taking advantage of the many extra-curricular and enrichment activities available. The school district uses the Missouri Connections online program (www.missouriconnections.org) for interest assessments and to explore the variety of options students have beyond high school.

Using the results of career assessments, students create their personal plan of study for their high school years and beyond. School counselors, teachers and other district personnel are available to guide students and parents in this important planning process. The planning process is critical to not only meeting graduation requirements, but also to taking the coursework that will ultimately lead to a successful post-secondary transition.

The following program of study templates serve as a guide, along with other career planning materials, to help students develop their personal plans of study.

Nichols Career Center Skilled Technical Sciences

OverviewThe Skilled Technical Sciences (STS) programs at Nichols Career Center provide students with the opportunity to gain skills necessary for profitable employment. Graduates of these programs are able utilize this education to directly enter the workforce, or continue their training at the college level.

STS programs are only available to juniors or seniors who have been selected through a competitive application process coordinated by the NCC counselor. This process requires a program tour, application, and interview with the program instructor. Because most STS programs are two-year programs, the application process generally favors incoming juniors, although incoming seniors are welcome to apply (the exception is the Health Sciences program, which is exclusive to seniors). A review of the applicant’s academic/attendance records, JCHS counselor evaluation, career pathway, and interview serve as the basis for selection. First-year students of two-year programs are required to undergo a performance review before being accepted to their second year of study.

Dual Credit & Articulated CreditThere are several opportunities for students to earn dual or articulated credit while enrolled in one of the STS programs. Current offerings include, but are not limited to: State Technical College of Missouri, State Fair Community College, Ozark Technical Community College, Stephens College, and several Art Institutes. A comprehensive list is posted on the NCC website. Enrollment for this credit is coordinated by the NCC counselor.

Industry Recognized Credential (IRC)Most STS programs provide students with the opportunity to earn an IRC. This credential generally serves as evidence that the student has demonstrated competency in specific skills required by various businesses and industry. Students who earn an IRC generally command better employment opportunities or wages when entering the workforce. The assessments for IRC’s are provided to students when they have completed the required curriculum, which is typically during the second year of study.

InternshipsSeveral STS programs offer internships for second year students in their final semester of study. Students are required to maintain the following: attendance of 95% or better, minimum 2.5 GPA, an excellent behavior record, be in good standing with JCHS, and be recommended by their program instructor. Students who are approved transport themselves to their internship site and attend internship in lieu of class time.

Assessments

Standardized tests are designed to give a common measure of students' performance. They help compare an individual's performance with the performance of a group of students from a given class, school, or school system. Since large numbers of students throughout the country take the same test, "standards" can be developed to show whether school programs are succeeding and how students are performing. Standardized achievement tests measure how much students have already learned about school subjects such as reading, math, language skills, spelling, or science. On the other hand, standardized aptitude tests measure your students' ability to learn in school. They measure verbal ability, mechanical ability, creativity, clerical ability, or abstract reasoning.

PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test)The PSAT/NMSQT measures verbal and mathematics reasoning skills important for academic success in college. It serves three purposes: gives the student practice for the SAT I; is the first step in qualifying for scholarships sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and other scholarship programs; gives the student the opportunity to participate in the Student Search Service. This test is taken in the junior year for NMSQT qualification.

ASVAB (The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery)The ASVAB measures students’ strengths and potential for future success. The ASVAB also provides career information for various civilian and military occupations and is an indicator for success in future endeavors including college, vocational school, or a military career.

ACT (American College Testing) ProgramThe ACT is a battery of four examinations in English, math, reading, and science reasoning, each of which yield separate scores measuring developed abilities. The test is required by many colleges as part of the application process for admission.

SAT I (Scholastic Aptitude Test)SAT I is a test used to predict student performance in college. Required by some schools as part of the application process, this three-hour test has two main sections—verbal and math.

Advanced Placement (AP) TestingStudents enrolled in AP courses are eligible to complete the AP examination for which the coursehas prepared them. Cost of the examination will be paid by the student. Information is available from the teachers of the AP courses. Each college or university determines which of these examination scores it will

86

accept. It is important for students to have accurate information from the school they plan to attend regarding the acceptance of AP credit.
