Pre-Reading DiscussionMeet with your partner and preview the book. Look at the covers, read the chapter titles and check out any illustrations.

Now it’s time to write a 3 paragraph essay about your pre-reading thoughts.

(indent) First paragraph: Start with a strong hook. Talk about what attracted you to the book, giving at least three details. Had you heard of this author before? Did the cover illustration pull you in? Is it part of a series that you like? Did a friend recommend it to you?

(indent) Second paragraph: What do you know about this book? Give at least three thoughts. What genre do you think it is? What do you think the plot will be about? Where do you think the story takes place? Do you know any of the characters’ names?

Interest your readers by including a striking statement or a quotation from the book or one of the characters.

Culminating Project IdeasConstruct a diorama (three-dimensional scene which includes

models of people, buildings, plants, and animals) of one of the main events of the book. Include a written description of the scene.

Create puppets that look like the characters in the book.

Create a mini newspaper that fits the plot of your book.

Plan a birthday celebration for one of the characters in the story. Write a paper with one paragraph telling about the theme and location, one paragraph telling about the food and music, one paragraph telling about gifts and games, and, one paragraph telling about the party attendees. Make sure that the party is realistic based on the book.

Make a time line of all the events in the book.

Learn something about the environment in which the book takes place and write a 2 page report on the new information you have learned. Include references.

Make a Venn diagram comparing this book to another. Include at least 25 details from each book. Make sure to use setting details, main character traits, main idea, problems, etc.

Write a letter to the main character of your book asking questions, protesting a situation, and/or making a complaint and/or a suggestion. Make sure to use at least 3 details from the book to prove your point.

Make a mobile using a coat hanger. Make sure to include all of the story features.

Research and tell a brief biography about the author. (3 paragraphs)

Think of a new adventure for the main character. Create an advertising poster for the sequel.

Rewrite the story as a picture book. Use simple vocabulary so that it may be enjoyed by younger students.

Make a "wanted" poster for one of the characters or objects in your book. Include the following: (a) a drawing or cut out picture of the character or object, (b) a physical description of the character or object, (c) the character's or object's misdeeds (or deeds?), (d) other information about the character or object which is important, (e) the reward offered for the capture of the character or object, (f) who is offering the reward.

If the book you read involves a number of locations within a country or geographical area, plot the events of the story on a map. Make sure the map is large enough for us to read the main events clearly. Attach a legend to your map. Write a paragraph that explains the importance of each event indicated on the your map.

Tape an interview with one of the characters in the book you read. Pretend that this character is being interviewed by a magazine or newspaper reporter. Be sure to write a script before taping. You will be both the interviewer and the interviewee. You will have to switch from chair to chair as you ask and answer the questions.
