START:Includes warm-up and the activities based in modified games with a divided court. Progressively it develops the concepts that will be later transferred to minivolley adjusted games which will be perfomed in the main part of the class session. In these games, a ball falls into other team’s court so the team can not throw it back or they send it out of our court, or under difficult conditions for them. Both teams will try not to let the ball fall in their court.

MAIN BODY:It starts with an oral explanation of the basic game principles of a technical element: setting, bumping, serving and blocking; after an individual practice, it later conects with cooperative activities (when the word “with” is used) or competitive (we use the word “against”).

Cooperative games “with” Competitive games “against”The target is to keep the ball playing, passing it to the other side of the court, that is to say, achieve the maximum number of touches in a row. It pursues stimulate the student’s experimentation, proposing the right techique to contact the ball in each moment, but also it gives the child the chance to participate actively: he will look for different strategies to “keep the ball flying” as long as he can..We will not pay much attention to technical correctness but to the continuity in the game.

They play games with scores and more specific rules. The teacher will pay attention to correct the students. It pursues to avoid that an excessive competitiveness dominate the children’s behavior, giving the idea of that a victory in a competition is achieved through the fulfilment of the rules and the correct technical performance, hitting the ball always three times..

Progression: 1 with 11 against 11 with 1 + 1

1 against 1 +12 with 2

2 against 22 with 2 +1

2 against 2 +13 with 3

3 against 3

END:

It includes activities whose intensity is much lower, allowing a progressive back to calm. The student will still be learning aspects related to minivolley but from a more informal and recreational approach while they become aware of what they have learned during the session..

Practical demonstration:The main body in the class sessions are the minivolley progression:

1 with 11 against 11 with 1 + 1

1 against 1 +12 with 2

2 against 22 with 2 +1

2 against 2 +13 with 3

3 against 3

In the practical demonstration we´ll practice all the situations from the “1 with 1” to “3 against 3”.

In the new interactive DVD and web page the teachers will find videos with examples of this exercises.

GAME: one with onePLAYERS: twoRULES: - one player on each side of the net

- setting serve from half of the court - two hits by player (self pass and pass) - setting and bumping only

GOAL: make the most number of contactsKEY POINTS: - control the ball

- Be aware of different distances and paths

The situation “one with one” is the most elementary of the so called reduced games.

It has a cooperative component and its main goal is to keep the ball playing for as long as possible.

It is the most basic of the “played games”.

It is suitable to add other components like reduced time, demand for aditional actions between hits, or a higher attention on the technique that should be used.

In this example, the students are proposed to make a self pass to ease a greater control and to take advantage of the technical transfer to the game.

GAME: one against onePLAYERS: twoRULES: -one player on each side of the net

-setting serve from back line -two hits by player (self pass and pass) -setting and bumping only

GOAL: scoreKEY POINTS: Control the technical performance and the movements

In this activity we have a new component: the opponent.

The team mate is now an opponent and the goal is now to score..

In this example, the students can either use 2 hits and set or bump according to their need or interest.

By having more than one hit, the game becomes longer and it has a degree of difficulty that can be used for both tactical situations: initiative and response.

GAME: one with one + onePLAYERS: threeRULES: -one player at each side of the net and another passing

- Setting serve from the middle court- the player that hits the ball runs from one court to the other to set the ball- the player that sets, makes a previous self pass (4 hits by team) and goes to the other court for

reception- only setting

GOAL: make the maximum number of hitsKEY POINTS: Cooperation among players

This cooperative game allows us to initiate the students in the different situations and specializations of our game.

The team mate becomes now a setter that eases the ball control within their own court.

As a cooperative game, we can emphasize its potential to be used to improve technically. Thus, the students do a self pass and a pass within their own court, while they try to look to where they want the ball to be sent.

GAME: one against one + onePLAYERS: threeRULES: - one player on each side of the court and another one that passes and moves to the other side (player B)

- setting serve from back line.- Only one hit by player, three hits by team- Passes only setting or bumping

GOAL: score KEY POINTS: - achieve three hits

- ease the job of the setter

The basic game against one opponent is complemented by the cooperative action of a team mate.

This team mate, the setter, helps both opponents to control the ball. This situation will allow the students to know how and where set the ball. This exercise is often use later for the specialization of the setter players.

GAME: two with twoPLAYERS: fourRULES: -two players on each side

- underhand serve- only one hit by player, three by team- set or bumping hits

GOAL: make the most number of hitsKEY POINTS: -Comunication among players

-Observate the distribution of game space

The team mate is introduced in the new cooperative situation “2 with 2”.

We try to increase the student ability to play through an improvement of the technique and tactics.

In our example, we have introduced the serving.

We are practicing a small real game.

The motivation can be found in the performance of technic skills for each situation and keep the ball playing.

GAME: two against twoRULES: - two players on each side

- underhand serve- only one hit by player, three by team- set or bumping hits

GOAL: scoreKEY POINTS: - Control the technical performance

- Comunicatation among players- Observate the court and opponents

In this situation “2 with 2” we can find almost all the elemental tactic situations of volleyball.

The player that does not bump becomes the setter, and the one that bumped will be the one to hit the ball to the other court.

The students realizes there is a conflict area and that there is uncertainity with the team mate. He has to communicate and take decisions: ¿Who goes for the ball? I do!---------------

GAME: two with two + onePLAYERS: fiveRULES: - two players on each side and another that passes and moves to the other court

- easy underhand serve - only one hit by player, three by team - set or bumping hits

GOAL: make the most number of hitsKEY POINTS: - Comunication among players

- Pay attention to the precision of the hits.

We continue progressing in the complexity of the proposals.

This is a coperative game that is very rich both technically and tactically.

It will allow us to improve in all tecnical situations.

The setter holds the most dificult position.

For the first time each team has two free players to make the third hit.

- observate the court and opponents

The students start to discover the tactic richness of volleyball as a game.

In this proposal, individual tactic plays a key role as the players can take many different decisions:

Where or who to serve, who to set the ball to in order to hit to the other side, where to spike, etc.

Also, team tactic becomes relevant because of the communications between players, both to hit or to play defence.

GAME: three with threePLAYERS: sixRULES: -three players on each side, one in the front row and two in the back.

-easy serving. -only one hit by player, three by team -setting or bumping -within the team, they rotate each time the ball goes to the other side

GOAL: Make the most number of hitsKEY POINTS: - Communicate among players

- Pay attention to the precision of the passes

With progression as a goal, we consolidate the concept of a minivolley team with a minimum of three elements and we start to practice.

The cooperation of the “3 with 3” will allow students improve the game achieving automatisms and mechanics within the team..

The students receive and send a controlled ball to the other court, which allows them to focus in the team work and play many different roles.

Thus, in this example, the team rotates each time the ball goes to the other side an so all the players can experience different situations and possibilities.

GAME: three against threePLAYERS: sixRULES: - three players on each side, one in the front and three in the back

- underhand serve- only one hit by player, three by team- setting or bumping- the ball goes to the other court spiking when possible- the player in the front blocks

GOAL: scoreKEY POINTS: - practice specific roles

- develop tactical thinking

Here we can already find all the elements of volleyball.

Blocking appears naturally by placing one or several players close to the net.

The hits and faints will improve the team attack, the defence job, the visualization and the development of the tactic capacity. In this example, each player should put into practice everything he has learnt both technically and tactically.
