Dear SASEAS families,

What a SON-filled start to our year! Jesus’ light is so bright, we have to wear shades! We are so happy to welcome all

our SASEAS Titans back to school and extend a special welcome to the seventeen new families joining us for the first

time. Our teachers and staff have done an incredible job preparing for another year of bringing students closer to Jesus

and challenging them academically. Thank you to everyone who helped us start the year so positively.

Speaking of positivity...I am going to recycle a message I shared in last year’s first issue of this newsletter as I began my

time with you. I heard a motivational speaker once say that research shows we will tell at least 12 people if something

“bad” happens to us during the day. On the flipside, the research finds that we will tell at most 3 people if something

“good” happens. Just as negativity can destroy any institution, positivity can be a force that moves any institution from

“good to great and great to excellent.” I have three challenges for all of us this year as it relates to positive interactions

and communications:

Please pray daily for our school -- our students, families, teachers, staff, administration, and

priests. I have received the nicest notes this past year from students and families telling me they are

praying for me and our school. Thank you! And keep those prayers coming! Also, remember, the

Mass is our most perfect prayer to God. Take time each weekend to be in His presence.

Let’s keep it positive in our communications with others. If feeling frustrated, confused, or

downright angry with a school decision or event, please reach out to your child’s teacher or me before

spending time with social media or sending out an email blast. Oftentimes, we can provide additional

clarity that may help with understanding a situation or our decision-making process. I have an open

door and want to hear your thoughts on our school’s continuous improvement. We are on the same

team and in this together!

Tell as many people you know about all the awesome things happening daily in our school. Share

our social media posts, talk to your neighbors, brag on your children and our school! Positive word-

of-mouth is our greatest marketing tool!

I’m so happy to be a part of the SASEAS family. I look forward to another outstanding year of faith, learning, growth,

discovery, and friendship. It’s a great time to be a Titan!

PTO Parent Survival guide- some of the unwritten rules of SASEAS

ALL YEAR

Titan Times-Read it every week. Full of great information regarding all school events and community

opportunities. Available every week.

Main Calendar. Check the school website for the extensive calendar- most events, including plays etc.

are scheduled prior to the school year beginning. You can find exact days and times of many events right

now! Be aware that if you have students in multiple grades, some of the activities may overlap- just be

aware and try to plan accordingly, especially at the end of the year. Events can be downloaded to iCal

and Google Calendar.

GET INVOLVED. Whether it is in the classroom, field trips or lunch duty…volunteer! The time spent

with our children is priceless and short lived. For those of you that work, teachers also usually have a list

of things that can be done at home. Look for PTO volunteer sign ups in the back of the main meeting

area at "Meet the Teacher" nights. These sheets contain info about all of our events throughout the year.

Signing up doesn’t fully commit you, you will be contacted prior to the event by the chairperson to see if

you are still willing and able to help. Sign up for as many as you can! Come early or stay late to sign up.

Our calendar of events is included in this guide.

VIRTUS. The Archdiocese requires training to be able to volunteer. There are many opportunities and

locations to get trained. It doesn't take long! www.virtus.org You will also need to complete a

background check through www.selection.com

Mass Check to see when your child's class is planning Mass, teachers usually try to put it in their

newsletter. It is fun to go see them be active participants during the Mass.

Sports. Program sign ups are usually several months before the actual season. Always check your

bulletin and Titan Times for helpful information. Boosters also have a website/link with helpful

information. They are always in need of coaches! Most school sports begin in third grade. There are

opportunities for younger grades as well. More information can be found throughout this handout.

Uniform exchange. This is a wonderful place to "shop" before you buy all new school clothes. It is also

a great place to recycle out grown uniforms. All uniforms are free! They are typically held the first full

week of school, during teacher conferences (October), and in the spring. Check Titan Times, the school

calendar, and the Parent Alert for additional dates and contact information of coordinators-they can be

reached throughout the school year.

Uniform rules, Spirit Day, vs. Out of Uniform. Look in the handbook, guidelines are available.

Birthdays can be celebrated-student can bring in an approved treat. If birthday falls during off school time

½ birthday is celebrated (teacher will assign a day)

Book fair Book fairs are held multiple times a year! Students can shop during their library time (send

money with them) during at least one of the book fairs. Families are welcome to shop during any hours

book fair is open.

Page 5: Titan Times - Edl · Titan Times August 30, 2017 Volume 12, Issue 1 Dear SASEAS families, ... Young Rembrandt’s Drawing Class for Kids is

Early dismissal days. It is tradition that St. Andrew students leave school and walk to local restaurants

for lunch. School alerts the local businesses and they have an open relationship to keep an eye on our

kids! If anyone acts up, school finds out. Our students have a good track record of being polite- make

sure you teach them how to tip well! They are also required to send a note from their parent giving

permission to walk to the restaurant. NO NOTE, NO WALK! They will ride the bus home.

Plays- check school calendar for exact dates- Kindergarten "Stone Soup"-November, First Grade-May,

Second Grade-March, Third Grade-March, Fourth Grade-December, Fifth Grade-February. Eighth grade

Talen Show – April.

Classroom Parent Readers several of the grades have opportunities for you to come in and read to your

child's class.

4th grade shields There is a parade during the All Saints Day Mass- try to attend and bring your camera!

Big Buddies Fourth Grade students are "Big Buddies" to Kindergarten students. They participate in

several events during the school year and help the younger students at Mass.

Fifth Grade. Holiday parties are held with the homerooms combined in the cafeteria-they are big kids

now!

St. Andrew Character Awards- multiple students are elected monthly by teachers to receive a character

award. Parents are usually given a week’s notice. The student has permission to come to school an hour

late the day of the awards so they can enjoy a family breakfast. The awards are at 8:40 in the church

basement with Mass following at 9:00.

Eighth Grade. Strongly consider a summer High School Placement Test course. It helps the students

know what to expect and makes them a lot less nervous. Test scores are not only used to determine

scholarships, they assist the High School with determining which level of courses to enroll your child.

Washington DC fundraisers. All money you raise through these fundraisers (Mumkins, Yankee candle,

etc), during 6th-8th grade, goes directly to your child's trip. The money is not shared with the entire

class- it lowers the overall cost of your own child's trip.

Eighth Grade Graduation. Even though you know it's coming it sneaks up on you! Sign up early to help

with the graduation dance. More information to follow in February/March.

FALL

Class lists. They are available online the Friday before school starts, but that is no fun! You have to go

to the festival when it opens and run to the school to see them displayed in the front windows! There is

also an Option C communication.

"Orientation" is typically scheduled for kindergarten, first grade, and all new students. Students AND

parents attend orientation. Sixth grade has a separate "orientation" for students only.

"Meet the Teacher" night is for grades 1-8 and is attended by PARENTS ONLY. St. Andrew "Meet the

Teacher" is a busy night rotating through your child's class schedule! Meet the Teacher night is held on 2

different nights so you are able to attend both campuses.

Page 6: Titan Times - Edl · Titan Times August 30, 2017 Volume 12, Issue 1 Dear SASEAS families, ... Young Rembrandt’s Drawing Class for Kids is

Magazine Drive. This will be online renewals only this year for people that want to keep what they

already have.

Titan Run 4 Fun. 100% of proceeds go to our school! It is a fun event for all!

Family Movie Night. A fun night for all!!

Fall Sports. Cross Country, Football, Cheerleading, and Girls Volleyball. Sign up in spring. Football

and cheerleading are open to students beginning in Kindergarten. All others are for third – eighth grade.

Girls on the Run volunteers needed to run the program each year for our fourth grade students. Not only

does the program train the girls to run in a race with other girls from all over the city, they incorporate

programs for self esteem, etc.

Fall Picture Day-September-uniforms are worn-tip-save one new shirt for picture day. Pictures must be

ordered and purchased on picture day. This picture will be in the yearbook.

Camp Kern- 3- day trip for 6th grade usually September/October. Pack lots of socks for the 6th grade

group- they tend to get wet and muddy. Throw in a trash bag for them to bring home the dirty/stinky

clothes. Don't send anything that you treasure! 1- day trip for 8th grade-great bonding experience.

Parent Teacher Conferences-first conference teacher meets with every parent. Second conference later

in year is by teacher request.

Halloween Parade. This is a fun event that is highly attended by parents and relatives! This is one to

consider taking off work for!

Political Convention. St. Andrew only. Usually the same week as Election Day in November. The kids

love it-look for t-shirt orders!

WINTER

Winter Sports. Girls basketball, Boys basketball. Sign up in August/September. These sports begin in

third grade.

Student Registration. Begins in January for preschool through 8th grade.

Science Fair. Completed by 7th grade. 6th grade students are recommended to attend the public viewing

to get ideas.

Cake Auction. St. Andrew only-this is a HUGE deal! The students each bring in money to bid on

amazing cakes baked by eighth grade families. The kids pool their money and cakes go for hundreds of

dollars! All money goes to charity for the annual "adopt a family" run by eighth graders.

Page 7: Titan Times - Edl · Titan Times August 30, 2017 Volume 12, Issue 1 Dear SASEAS families, ... Young Rembrandt’s Drawing Class for Kids is

SPRING

Sports. Boys volleyball, SMAC Track. Sign up in winter. Volleyball begins in third grade, Track begins

in first grade.

TITAN MADNESS. A fun-filled adult only event!

Genius Project. Completed by 6th grade. 5th grade students are recommended to attend public viewing

to get ideas.

May Day. Very fun day for third grade. Many activities that revolve around what the students have

learned all year. A very fun day to volunteer and spend precious fun time with your kids!

School supply kits are a convenient way to get your school supplies-orders take place in the spring prior

to the following school year. But, you do not have to buy the supply kits- you can shop on your own.

Fifth Grade "Picnic". While there is food for lunch, it is not really a picnic. It is a fun-filled day of

activities/challenges for teams to compete. A separate parent committee is formed to plan a full day of

events and food. IT IS SO MUCH FUN for the kids! Lots of volunteers make it easy to plan. Families

are welcome to join the madness all day.

May Crowning Mass-Ceremonies at Seton and St. Andrew-great to attend.

Grandparents Day – held during May Crowning at the Seton Campus

Third Grade parents volunteer to organize and "host" the First Communion Brunch for the second grade

families. It is held at school usually in May and is funded by PTO.

Fifth Grade and Eighth Grade. They get dressed up for May Crowning and Graduation. Be prepared to

buy two nice outfits or beg your child to wear the same thing twice! (maybe figure this out with your

Easter outfit)

Mother's Brunch is highly recommended for 6-8th grade moms. May Crowning is held in church for

Mothers and Grandmothers with all St. Andrew students. Brunch is held after for Mothers and

Grandmothers only. You may not get to spend time with your child, but it is an awesome event.

The spring of 8th grade year is crazy busy and fun! Form committees early to plan events!

Seventh Grade parents need to volunteer to chaperone the 8th grade dance that is immediately following

the graduation! You will get a sneak pick for planning for your child and the kids are fun to watch!

Confirmation service hours. 8th graders are already out of school and can earn service hours by

volunteering at the Seton Campus field day. They can also get service hours volunteering at Seton Parish

festival.

We are ALL members of PTO!!!! The PTO board thanks you in advance for assisting through

volunteer hours, fund-raising, monetary donations, food donations,

and supply donations. It takes thousands of dollars and many

volunteers to run all of our programs which enrich our children's

school experience.

PTO PURPOSE: In the interest of spiritual, intellectual and physical growth for

the students at SASEAS School, the PTO commits to enhancing the roles of

parents and teachers in the education of the students by increasing their

knowledge of education and its processes. The PTO shall provide an opportunity for

parents and teachers to work together for the good of the students and the

school in an environment marked by mutual respect of all parties. In helping to

create an optimal environment for children’s academic growth and faith formation,

the SASEAS PTO shall support and promote the school’s mission.

Our school philosophy on fundraising is one that will raise money and at the same

time bring the school community together. SASEAS has two major fundraising

events. In the fall, every student will participate in Titan Run 4 Fun.

Titan Madness, an adult fun filled evening will return in the Spring.

100% of the funds raised will stay right at our school. These fundraisers help

support school initiatives, activities, events, programs and special products. Each

year we will research opportunities to support through our fundraising efforts

and determine a need to focus on. None of this can happen without the

support of our school families!

We look forward to working with you!

Every penny…every dollar…we raise is important and will go to the

benefit of the children!

SASEAS easy ways to earn money for our school!

Labels for education can be redeemed to support educational and physical programs at our school. Participating products

include: Pepperidge Farm, Dannon, Post, Campbell’s, Prego, Bic and many more. Turn in collected labels to school at any time

during the school year.

Box Tops For Education is one of the nation’s largest school earning loyalty programs. Last year our school received nearly

$3,000 from Box Top collections. Each Box Top is worth $0.10 and they add up fast. All you need to do is cut them off of

the box and save until the designated collections times twice during the school year. Typically collected in October and February.

Please note we cannot count any Labels For Education or Box Tops that have reached their expiration date or have the expiration date

missing. Please help us increase our collection by asking family and friends to collect.

Local Research Group (LRG) is an organization dedicated to improving products through consumer research. LRG is committed to giving back to the community and is reaching out to schools and different local organizations to participate in their program. LRG will provide different research opportunities for you to participate, where both panelists and the school will be compensated. We ask you to consider joining the panel through SASEAS. Once you sign up, you will be contacted to determine if you qualify for future tests. You will be provided with an ID number specifically for you. If you have additional interested family members or friends (18 or older and with their own email address) they may participate as well. You do not have to have a student at the school to participate. There are a variety of tests you may be asked to participate in, including: interviews (individual and group), product usage tests, visual/olfactory tests, online surveys, etc.

To sign up, all you need to do is contact Erin Hofmann at [email protected] with the following information. You may also return this form to the school office.
