For many of us, the memories hearken back to pleasant times with family and friends— memories filled with warmth and joy that create hopeful expectations of the holidays ahead. But when I get to know the homeless and hurting people who come through our doors, I find that their holiday memories are usually as bleak as their present condition. In fact, the harshness and pain in their past often has defined them. Their memories reinforce their despair and suggest the future holds nothing better. That’s why Cornerstone Rescue Mission is here— to compassionately embrace hurting people in order to instill hope for a better future. We share the Christmas story all year long for God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. God truly instills new hope in troubled hearts through the gifts of love and grace. What a privilege it is for our staff and volunteers to share these precious gifts and see lives redeemed. Your dedication to the hurting men, women and children we serve, your prayers, your service and your gifts are transforming lives that are being filled with positive memories. When they look back on their time at the Mission, it will motivate them for the future. They will remember finally experiencing true sobriety. They will remember breaking the chains of addiction to unhealthy relationships. They will remember new educational and vocational skills. They’ll remember the names and faces of staff and volunteers who helped them fight for freedom from the past. And most importantly they’ll remember their first taste of God’s goodness. Your special gift of hope this Christmas provides meals, shelter, counseling and healing to many hurting men, women and children. You help these precious people understand their past, delve into their pain and give their broken hearts to God. And He’s the One who transforms their past into a beautiful future. The memories they create here will remind them of the hope they have found in Christ. May this Christmas season be filled with blessings for you and your family. The holiday season is a time that is rich in memories. For many of us, the memories hearken back to pleasant times with family and friends—memories filled with warmth and joy that create hopeful expectations of the holidays ahead. But when I get to know the homeless and hurting people who come through

our doors, I find that their holiday memories are usually as bleak as their present condition. In fact, the harshness and pain in their past often has defined them. Their memories reinforce their despair and suggest the future holds nothing better. OuTrighT gifTS The easiest way to make a contribution to Cornerstone Rescue Mission is by donating cash, appreciated securities or property. You will receive a full fair market value tax deduction, and you can avoid any associated capital gain tax in the process. gifTS Of SecuriTieS Even during periods of stock market turmoil, many people own publicly traded securities with long-term appreciation (held longer than one year). These assets are often the best to donate as they provide a greater tax benefit. In order to preserve maximum tax advantages, you should transfer the actual securities to us rather than the proceeds from a sale. If you have stock losses, generally you should not contribute the stock, but rather sell the stock yourself to realize the loss for tax purposes. You can then contribute the proceeds and take a charitable deduction.

Mutual fund shares can provide the same tax advantages as gifts of appreciated stock. Mutual fund transfers often require several days, so plan ahead and initiate the transfer well before December 31. real eSTaTe When making a gift to a charitable organization, real estate is sometimes the best gift of all. Many people reach a stage in life where they simply don’t want the management responsibility that goes with property ownership.

Outright gifts of real estate assets—or through a life income arrangement—can produce multiple tax advantages to the donor. If you have rental apartments, commercial buildings, a farm or vacation property, you might be able to avoid both capital gains taxes and depreciation recapture taxes as well.

gifT annuiTieS The charitable gift annuity is one of the most popular forms of life income gifts and offers many advantages: • income for life—at attractive payout rates for one or two lives. • Tax Deduction Savings—a large part of what you transfer is a deductible charitable gift • Tax-free Payout—a large part of your annual payment might be tax-free • capital gains Tax Savings—when you contribute securities to fund a gift annuity, you avoid any taxes on your “paper profit” If you are experiencing a low return on CDs, money market accounts, treasury notes or bond funds, a gift annuity can be an excellent alternative. Returns are based on annuity tables and vary by age.

all i Want for christmas is my new front Teeth On November 2, a group of men staying at the Cornerstone Rescue Mission received a special gift—free dental work, thanks to two wonderful dentists, Chad Carpenter of Carpenter Dental and Joseph Kieffer of Kieffer Family Dental. Both are members of the Cornerstone Rescue Mission Board of Directors. Providing this service has been in the planning stages for over a year, according to Carpenter. “That’s when Dr. Kieffer and I discussed setting up a clinic, something more than just a one-time ‘dental day’ that has been done previously. We wanted a dedicated clinic to serve the poor of the community.”

Carpenter had a space in mind at 30 Main (the main Mission building) that he thought would work, but when he looked into the costs, liability, and maintenance he realized it would be a gigantic task to get things going. “Lots of paperwork, setting, up, need for money, and that’s just a part of it,” Carpenter said. “Dr. Kieffer had envisioned a clinic downtown in a space where volunteer dentists could go and work on the poor and homeless and even the working poor, and while this may be realized in the future, there is already a clinic operating that was willing to let us volunteer and work on this ‘at risk’ population.” That clinic is the Community Health Center, and that’s where 18 Mission guests were transported for some much-needed dental TLC, including fillings and extractions. “One case of possible oral cancer or pre-cancer was also discovered and the patient is now being seen by an oral surgeon,” Carpenter said. “We got a heck of a lot done in three hours, thanks to our staff and Community Health personnel. Assisting the process were Stephanie Moran, Danni Nordhagen, Abby Schiley, Laura Turner, Jenny Llorens, and Melissa Weidenbach, who all also volunteered their time. “I’m sure Dr. Kieffer would agree that we got three times as much done because our staff was willing to volunteer their time as well,” Carpenter said. Kieffer added, “For me personally, this is the beginning of a dream that I have had since I began practice in Rapid City. The set-up is still in its infancy and has a few things that need to be worked out, but it has huge potential. I think I can speak for Chad as well when I say that this is a blessing for all parties involved, but most importantly all the people volunteering.”

As James 2:15-17 says, Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. These fine men and women showed us that putting faith into action works. The men who received the dental care were overwhelmed by their generosity and the time they donated to care for “the least of these.” Everyone involved in this project has been blessed, and we wish to extend a very special thank you to Carpenter Dental and Kieffer Family Dental!
