FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE:

Last week the TIS HAWK Community once again participated in Start with Hello Week!

Start With Hello is a program founded by the Sandy Hook Promise Organization. The

program is designed to bring individuals and school communities together to foster

looking out and caring for one another. Young people have the power to see someone,

reach out and Start with Hello in order to reduce social isolation and create a more

connected and inclusive school. Each student has the power to make a difference and

make a new friend.

The schedule of events for Start with Hello was as follows:

Monday, September 20th: Green Day To promote awareness and call attention to Start

with Hello Week. Get connected and say hello!

Tuesday, September 21st: Random Act of Kindness Day

Get caught being kind! Students and staff were encouraged to engage in and recognize

acts of kindness throughout the school day.

Page 2: T.I.S. Digital Backpack September 27, 2021

Wednesday, September 22nd: Uniquely You Day Students and staff dressed up and

expressed themselves in ways that make them unique. We are all unique and special -

let’s celebrate each and every one of us!

Thursday, September 23rd: Get to know your lunch table buddy! Every lunch table

was given fun conversation starters for students to learn about the person sitting near

them.

Friday, September 24th: Compliment Day We spent time with our Hawk’s Nests

talking about communities and about being kind to others. Each student made an emoji

with a positive comment, compliment or encouraging/kind word written on it. Student

emojis will be made into a school mural.

Thanks to everyone in our school community for your participation in Start with Hello

week! We hope you were able to make some new connections. Remember, there are just

three easy steps to take: Step 1. See someone alone. Step 2. Reach out and help. Step 3.

Start with Hello!

HAWKS Nest

On Friday, September 24 we held our first HAWKS Nest advisor/advisee meeting

groups. The purpose of HAWKS Nests is to come together as a school community in

nests or small groups to build healthy relationships and teach social & emotional skills.

HAWK Nests consist of a staff member and approximately ten students from across

different classrooms throughout the building. Our HAWKs Nests start with members

identifying how they’re feeling through a fist to 5 (holding up one through five fingers to

indicate how they are feeling) groups then follow a lesson plan focussing on building

healthy relationships, teaching social emotional skills and embracing each person's

importance as a member of our school community.

The intent of Wednesday’s lesson was to connect the idea of “community” with kindness

for others. Students and their HAWK Nest leader discussed the meaning of community,

watched a reading of the book HAve You Filled YOur Bucket Today? The HAWK Nest

ended with students making their own complimentary emoji which will be used to create

a school-wide kindness mural.

Dear Fourth Grade Parents and Guardians,

Our Fourth Grade Open House Night is an opportunity for parents and guardians to

visit their child’s classroom. The event is for parents/guardians only. It is scheduled for

Tuesday, September 28th from 6:30pm - 6:50pm. This year Open House will be

abbreviated. Teachers will conduct a brief overview of their classrooms. We will not

conduct our traditional, large group presentation in our cafeteria. Upon arrival, please go

directly to your child’s classroom for a 15-minute teacher-led presentation about their

classroom. If you are unable to attend, please see the Tolland Intermediate School

Webpage. A digital link will be made available from Monday, September 27th through

Monday, October 4. The link will provide you with the opportunity to view the

presentation for your child’s classroom. Conference sign-ups will not occur at Open

House. More information regarding conferences will be sent at a later date. Feel free to

contact your child’s teacher should you have any additional questions.

If possible, we ask that one adult per household attend our Open House. This event is for

parents and guardians only. Lastly, please remember that masks are required in public

school buildings.

Unified Arts Update for September 2021

Art ~ Library ~ Music ~ Physical Education

Ms. Ballard - ART Welcome back! It’s great to see all your happy faces!

Grade 3- Our third graders will be getting started with learning the Elements of

Art.

The first Element we will be working with is Line and learning about different

types of Lines. We will then make a composition using the different types of lines

and add another Element of Art, called Color. Students will then select their color

scheme from the primary, secondary and neutral colors.

Grade 4 - Grade four artists will start the year by working with the Elements, Line

and Color. The students will design a Paper Shadow Box highlighting their first

names and illustrations of things they like.

Grade 5 - Grade five students will be inspired by the artist Alexander Calder and

start by making 3D Wire Animal sculptures. Alexander Cadler’s first artwork that

brought him fame was his miniature wire circus. He was best known for his love

and work with Mobiles. Students will be asked to select their favorite animal and

bring in a picture of their animal to work from. The sculptures will have a wooden

painted base and colored wire to help us explore our first “Principle of Design''

called Emphasis.

Page 9: T.I.S. Digital Backpack September 27, 2021

• All students in grades 3, 4 and 5 have been given a large two gallon size

ziplock baggie to keep all of their art materials together. Students will need

to bring these materials with them to every class.

• All students should bring in a smock to wear during art to protect their

clothes. The smock can be placed in the ziplock baggie until

needed.

• All T. I. S. students have been asked to join Ms. Ballard’s Google

Classroom.

Mrs. Hill - Library

Grade 3 - Grade three library students will be introduced to Destiny, the online

library catalog system. Destiny helps students find books on the shelf at the TIS

library. They will review fiction, nonfiction, biography and reference books and

how to tell the difference between them. Students will review three Google Apps:

Docs, Slides and Forms. They will open, edit and turn in practice “assignments”.

They will also use Google Apps in class to complete library work such as short

research assignments. Third grade students will also participate in STEM

challenges throughout the year in library. STEM = science, tech, engineering, and

math. Sometimes an “A” is added to STEM to make STEAM - the “A” stands for

art. Students will use creative thinking, cooperation, exploration, design, building,

testing and presentation skills during the STEM/STEAM challenges. And, of

course, third grade students will have access to almost 15,000 books in the TIS

library! They will learn about searching for books of interest and specific fiction

genres to find “just the right books” for them!

Grade 4 and Grade 5 - Fourth and fifth grade students will review library topics

they learned in earlier grades like Destiny, the online library catalog system.

Destiny helps students find books on the shelf at the TIS library. They will review

fiction, nonfiction, biography and reference books and how to tell the difference

between them. Students will review three Google Apps: Docs, Slides and Forms.

They will open, edit and turn in practice “assignments”. They will also use Google

Apps in class to complete library work such as short research assignments. Third

grade students will also participate in STEM challenges throughout the year in

library. In addition to these lessons, students will practice simple search strategies

on the internet, learning how to tell the difference between a helpful website and an

advertisement. They will also use other tech programs like Nearpod that are fun,

interactive ways to show what they learned.

Page 10: T.I.S. Digital Backpack September 27, 2021

Mrs. Baker - Music/Chorus

Grade 3 general music: Third graders have been singing folk songs, playing

musical instruments, reading folktales and fables, and learning number counting of

quarter note and eighth note rhythms to start our school year. They have done folk

dances from around the world and movement activities which teach our musical

concepts.

Grade 4 General Music: The fourth graders will be learning about the music,

instruments, geography, dances and cultures of North American, South America

and Australia. The students will also work on mastering the names of the notes on

the treble staff and learn number counting.

Grade 5 general music: In fifth grade the focus is going to be on using the

musical concepts they have been learning in the primary grades to create, perform,

and compose music. Students will be doing graphic, standard and computer

composing. The students will work on mastering the names of the notes on the

treble staff and learn number counting. The highlight of this year’s curriculum will

be learning to play the ukulele. Students do NOT have to own their own

ukulele. Fifth grade music will be a fun filled academic year.

Mrs. Marchesani - Band/Chorus

Chorus for Grade 4 and Grade 5: Sign-up information will be available October

18th. Both Choruses this year will be under the direction of Mrs.

Marchesani. Students may sign up for both Chorus and Band!

Grade 4 Band: Last call for sign-ups for 4th grade Band! Our virtual Instrument

Rental Night was held on September 15th and was very well attended. Rental

instruments or family owned instruments sent out for servicing should be delivered

to TIS by Friday, October 1st. Small group Band instruction classes begin during

the week of October 4th! Small group Band instruction classes are meeting during

Page 11: T.I.S. Digital Backpack September 27, 2021

the school day on a pull-out basis during non-graded class time such as

Keyboarding. A limited number of class slots are available before school.

October’s focus will be correct instrument assembly, producing a characteristic

tone on the instrument and tap into students' concentration, confidence and

responsibility skills. Our 4th graders can’t wait to start!

Grade 5 Band: 5th Grade Band is open to all 5th grade students and it’s not too

late to sign-up! We welcome back students who started Band last year in 4th grade

and also any 5th grader who wants to learn how to play a concert band

instrument. Small group Band instruction classes are meeting during the school

day on a pull-out basis during non-graded class time such as Keyboarding. If your

child’s instrument was not cleaned or serviced over the summer, it's always a good

idea to schedule your child's instrument to be cleaned and serviced. Please contact

your rental company directly to make arrangements. If you own the

instrument, please email me if you need suggestions for instrument

servicing/repair techs. [email protected]

For both Bands: If you’re new to Band, several area music stores rent band

instruments on a trial basis. For your convenience, Gerry’s Music Shop has a

representative that visits TIS during the school year every Friday. Please contact

them directly for instrument rental information. 1-800-724-7402

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN OUR CLASSROOMS

GRADE 3 Third graders have made a wonderful transition to Tolland Intermediate School. Teachers and students are getting used to the new routines and the different forms of learning that are going on throughout the week and the day. We have started off the year with our Journeys Reading Program. Our focus has been on story structure and text details. Third graders are making inferences about the stories and learning about the message of a story. Our grammar skills include parts and types of sentences. We will move on to compound sentences, antonyms, as well as common and proper nouns in the next few weeks. Third grade teachers are using the Journeys programs to teach narrative and descriptive writing. Your child started writing about a favorite place by adding specific details to give the reader a picture of that place. In Fundations we have completed the orientation and our working on Unit One. We’ll be reviewing marking, syllable types and starting our cursive writing. Third grade teachers are implementing the Bridges Math Program this year. Your child is excited to participate in Number Corner each day. We are already working on multiplication concepts. During daily math instruction we are reviewing strategies for addition and subtraction facts. Please continue to have your child practice their addition and subtraction math facts using flashcards, math games, or Reflex. This will help them in their everyday math. In Science we are watching our caterpillars feed on milkweed in hopes that they will continue to grow and change into monarch butterflies. Students are reading about monarch butterfly migration and discussing how the changes in the environment affect their survival and population growth. We have been visiting the Monarch Butterfly Garden that is on the side of the building at T.I.S. and learning about the flowers that attract butterflies. Eventually we hope to release our fully developed butterflies into the garden and wish them well on their migration south for the winter. In late October, we’ll begin to study Tolland in the 1700s and learn about the settling of Tolland. Students will explore what life was like on a farm. Third graders will learn about the Benton Homestead in Tolland. In addition, we dive into the Legend of the Charter Oak, which is a fascinating part of Connecticut history. Again, thank you for all of the help that you are giving your child during this school year.Thank you for teaching your child about how to be safe with other students and adults in school. Together we can make this a safe and successful school year. GRADE 4 We're back, and off to a great 2021-2022 school year! Our 4th graders seem excited and eager to see what the year will bring. It feels wonderful to be in-person with our students!

Page 14: T.I.S. Digital Backpack September 27, 2021

We are enthusiastic about our new math program, Bridges in Math. The students have been working on methods and models for multiplication and division, and will soon start learning about finding factors of numbers and exploring prime & composite numbers. Bridges in Math features a program called Number Corner, daily 20-minute workouts that introduce, reinforce, and extend skills and concepts related to critical areas of study. In Language Arts, our first unit focuses on story structure, including point of view and flashback, using realistic fiction, biography, informational texts, a play and a tall tale. Students are starting to learn about the writing process, which will involve writing their own narrative realistic fiction pieces. We are starting the year with a science unit, weathering and erosion. Students will study the various forces that cause the surface of Earth to change over time. Throughout the year we will continue to promote positive classroom communities with our HAWK Nest and Second Step programs. GRADE 5 5th graders are off to a great start. Students have settled into their routines nicely and enjoy the movement of switching classes. Students are working hard to model our HAWK expectations for all members of our community. This year in ELA, our goal is for all of our students to develop or foster a love for reading. One way to do this is to read different genres throughout the year. Students will read a different genre each month and for the month of September, our genre is realistic fiction. We will be reading a realistic fiction novel together in class. Students also had fun choosing a realistic fiction text in library class to read at home and during independent reading time. We can’t wait to learn more about different genres throughout the year! In fifth grade Social Studies, students learn early United States history, by beginning the year studying indigenous life and exploration, and end the year with the Revolutionary War. This year’s units of study are related to freedom and equality and how we became the United States of America. Throughout the year we will focus on the following question with each unit of study: How have American conceptions of freedom and equality changed from prior to colonization to the American Revolution? This year in Math we are using a new program called Bridges in Mathematics. The goal in this program is to make math more meaningful and exciting while meeting standards. We just began our first unit focused around expressions, equations, and finding volume. Students have also participated in Number Corner to introduce, reinforce and extend skills and concepts related to the math classroom and real world contexts. We are off to a great start!

Page 15: T.I.S. Digital Backpack September 27, 2021

The first Science unit of the year is Earth, Moon and Sun. Our essential question that students will begin to answer is “How does outer space affect Earth?” Fifth grade scientists are full of excellent questions and facts about our Solar System. Keep up the good work. We hope to see you at the 5th grade Open House on Tuesday, October 5th beginning at 6:30. An email will be sent out to all families soon with more details. The fifth grade teachers and staff are looking forward to a wonderful school year!

4th Grade Band Information

Dear 4th grade Parent/Guardian:

It's not too late for your child to sign up for 4th grade Beginning Band!

In June, members of our TIS 5th grade Band provided an outdoor “Band Instrument Demo” performance for your children at the end of 3rd grade. Third graders were encouraged to make an informed decision about choosing an instrument to play. One student has chosen to learn flute this year because it “sounds like unicorns in a valley”. Another student chose alto saxophone because he “really likes Jazz music and would like to learn how to play”. The Harry Potter theme played on the clarinet appealed to a student who “likes the sound.” If your child is interested in learning to play a band instrument this year, please fill out the instrument selection sheet attached to this notice and return it to me by Wednesday, September 29TH. I will try to honor the student’s first choice of instrument. However, it is of the utmost importance that there is a properly balanced instrumentation in the band. (If you already handed in a completed form, you do not need to fill out another one).

If you own a previously used instrument in the family, this may be a convenient method for providing an

instrument for your child. Please be sure that it is has been serviced recently and is in good playing

condition. It can be very frustrating for a beginning instrumentalist to try to play an instrument that is in

need of repair. Gerry’s Music Shop (1-800-724-7402) can help if you own an instrument that needs

cleaning or repairs.

There are several area music stores who rent band instruments on a trial basis. For your convenience,

Gerry’s Music Shop has a representative who comes to TIS during the school year on Fridays and he will

review the instrument rental process on September 15th. Website:

5th Grade Band 2021-2022

I am so happy and excited to be the 5th Grade Band Director again this year and I can’t wait to

see and hear my students from last year! Also, it’s not too late to join 5th grade Band. Yes, you

can learn an instrument this year even if you did not start last year.

Here is some initial information about 5th grade Band. This year, Band students may be seated

3 feet apart if they are wearing their music masks and using bell covers on their instruments.

My plan is to start small group instruction classes during the week of September 20, 2021.

These small groups will meet during the school day on a pull-out basis during non-graded class

time such as Keyboarding. We may need to use some recess time as well. In the past (before

the pandemic) we would also have full ensemble rehearsal once per week. Currently, we’re

hoping to have large numbers of students playing band instruments together after January. I’ll

keep you posted!

If you’re new to Band, several area music stores rent band instruments on a trial basis. For your

convenience, Gerry’s Music Shop has a representative that visits TIS during the school year

every Friday. Please contact them directly for instrument rental information. Online rental is

available 24/7.
