T.I.S. Digital Backpack October 2, 2017 WHATS NEW AT TIS: Grade 3 Third graders have made a great transition to TIS. All third graders are working hard in the Math In Focus program. Most classes have finished Chapter One which was Place Value and are wrapping up Chapter Two on Mental Math. We will be moving on to addition in the next few days. Please be sure that your child is practicing math facts at home, this will help them complete their math work more accurately and efficiently. In third grade, our current reading unit is called Off to Adventure. Students are learning about character traits, inferencing strategies and how to summarize a story. We are also working on answering questions using details from the text. During Spelling students are learning the routines of word study, various vowel patterns and syllable types. In Writer’s Workshop students are learning to write small moment stories. They are working to craft true stories by elaborating with specific details that create an image in the reader’s mind. We are currently wrapping up a science unit on Forces and Motion which included learning about, friction and gravity. We will then transition onto a Social Studies unit about life in Connecticut and Tolland during the 1700s. We will go on a field trip to the Connecticut Historical Society to participate in a play about the Legend of the Charter Oak. After the play we will visit the Benton Homestead in Tolland to learn about farm life during the 1700s. Grade 4 September 2017 We're back, and off to a great 2017-2018 school year! Our 4th graders seem excited and eager to see what the year will bring. In math we've started working with whole numbers for chapter 1 and already jumped to chapter 2 continuing that work in estimation and number theory. Classes are hard at work to continue working on the multiplication fact fluency that will bring them wonderful success in math throughout the year. In science and social studies, were well underway in learning about plant and animal adaptations along with food webs. Students are able to think about what type of adaptations plants and animal need in order to survive in different habitats. And don’t forget about how important it is to learning about different map skills and the 7 continents and 5 oceans.

WHAT’S NEW AT TIS:

Grade 3 Third graders have made a great transition to TIS. All third graders are working hard in the Math In Focus program. In language arts, 4th grade is looking at story elements and structure in narrative focusing our first unit on realistic fiction. Not only do the students have the chance to read realistic fiction but they are also well underway writing their own realistic fiction pieces making sure to include character descriptions, setting, a problem, and the solution. Grade 5 5th graders are off to a great start. Students have settled into their routines nicely and they enjoy switching classes. Students actively participated in first grade level assembly on our school PBIS expectations. Our first whole school assembly was also a success as we welcomed the third graders to our school. In reading, students enjoyed listening to short stories as they learned Notice and Note signposts. Students will be expected to flag these reading strategies as they read. Writer’s Workshop is in full swing. Ask your child to share their current personal narrative piece. Fifth grade math students have just wrapped up Chapter 1, which included reading and writing large numbers and working on comparing and ordering numbers, as well. They were off to a fantastic start. Many of them remembered these standards from 4th grade, so nice job 4th grade teachers! Students have created beautiful maps in social studies. This map project was a review of map skills. Our next unit is on Native Americans and the natural resources they used to survived. The first science unit of the year is Earth, Moon, and Sun. The fifth graders are currently learning about the reason for seasons and the reason for night and day. The classes participated in a planet walk to get a better idea of how far away from the sun certain planets are. They couldn't believe the distances between the outer planets. Fifth grade scientists are full of excellent questions and facts about our Solar System. Keep up the good work. Hope to see you at the 5th grade curriculum night on Thursday, October 5th. Curriculum night will begin with a brief introduction in the APR at 6:30 followed by a classroom presentation from your child’s homeroom teacher. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year.

Mrs. Hill - Library Media

Volunteers are needed in the library! If you are interested, and could volunteer

for at least one hour a week, please email Mrs. Hill at: [email protected]

*THANK YOU TO THE DOYLE FAMILY FOR DONATING MAGAZINES

FOR KIDS THAT WERE IN GREAT CONDITION!

Third grade: students have begun checking books out. Please help them find a

safe spot to keep their library book at home. In the month of September and the

beginning of October, third grade students will be learning HAWK library

expectations, how to find books using our online catalog Destiny and then where

to find the books in their new library. The guidelines for the voluntary Library

Book Challenges will be introduced.

Fourth grade and Fifth grade: in the month of September and during the

beginning of October, students will review HAWK library expectations, our online

catalog Destiny, and book genres. The guidelines for the voluntary Library Book

Challenges will be introduced. The current list of Nutmeg Book Award nominees

will also be discussed. The “Nutmeg Books” stem from a Connecticut

organization which promotes quality children’s literature, with new books added

each year. There are many different age-appropriate Nutmeg lists, K-grade 12. If

you would like more information about the Nutmeg Books, or the list of books

appropriate for your student, please visit their website at: www.nutmegaward.org/

Ms. Baker - Music/Chorus

Grade 3 general music: Third graders will be singing folk songs, playing musical

instruments, reading folktales, and practicing their triplet rhythms to start our school

year. They will play games and do movement activities which teach our musical

concepts. I’m looking forward to getting to know all your children this year.

Page 5: T.I.S. Digital Backpack October 2, 2017 · 2017. 9. 28. · T.I.S. Digital Backpack October 2, 2017 WHAT’S NEW AT TIS: Grade 3 Third graders have made a great transition to TIS

Grade 4 general music: The fourth grade music curriculum teaches music through

traveling around the world. Students will learn music from North America, South

America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The students will be playing music on their recorders

and many multicultural instruments. So please bring those recorders to school for every

music class.

Grade 5 general music: In fifth grade the focus is on using the musical concepts they

have been learning in the primary grades to create, perform, and compose music. The

students will work on mastering the names of the notes on the treble staff and learn

number counting. Fifth grade music will be a fun filled academic year.

Grade 5 Chorus: Chorus meets on Wednesday mornings at 8:00 am in room 136.

Students who cannot attend chorus at this time please contact Ms. Baker. I am looking

forward to another great year with the chorus.

Mrs. Marchesani -

Band/Chorus Grade 4 Chorus:

All fourth graders are welcome to join Chorus! 4th Grade Chorus meets on Wednesday

mornings from 8:00 to 8:50 a.m. and a second section is also held on Wednesday during

the 4th grade recess time. Both Chorus groups will meet in Mrs. Marchesani’s room, #226.

Band students can also join Chorus! The 4th grade Chorus will present a Winter Concert

on December 12th at 7p.m. at TIS in the all-purpose room (snow date December

14th) and a Spring concert. Chorus begins on Wednesday, September 27th. A notice has

been sent home and also posted on Digital Backpack. I can’t wait to meet all your

children and have a fun musical year with them!

Grade 4 Band: 4th graders are still signing up for Band and it is very exciting to see

their enthusiasm! 4th Grade small lesson groups began on September 18th. A notice about

small group lessons was sent home. If you rented an instrument for your child and it was

delivered to the school, your child received the instrument at their first lesson. We will

have a Winter and a Spring concert. In addition, the 4th Grade Band performs at an

assembly for the 3rd graders in the Spring. Full Band rehearsals for 4th graders will be

held on Thursdays this year. They will begin on Thursday, October 19th. The morning

section will meet in Mrs. Baker’s room, 136, from 8:00 to 8:50 a.m. For students who

cannot get to school for an 8 a.m. rehearsal, I also have a Thursday Recess Band option,

which meets in my room, 226. I am really looking forward to starting your children on

their amazing journey of learning how to play an instrument solo, in small groups and in

a large ensemble!

Page 6: T.I.S. Digital Backpack October 2, 2017 · 2017. 9. 28. · T.I.S. Digital Backpack October 2, 2017 WHAT’S NEW AT TIS: Grade 3 Third graders have made a great transition to TIS

Grade 5 Band: 5th Grade Full Band rehearsals began Tuesday, September 5th!!! Full

Band meets Tuesday mornings from 8:00 to 8:50 a.m. in room 136 (Mrs. Baker’s room).

This most highly recommended option is a great opportunity for Band members to play in

a large ensemble with a variety of other instruments, boosts musicianship skills and

provides a weekly “concert readiness” experience. For students who cannot get to school

for an 8 a.m. rehearsal, I also have a Tuesday Recess Band option which will meet in my

room, 226. However, playing time is extremely limited (20 minutes at the most). Small

group lesson assignments were sent home and those lessons began on September 18th. As

soon as the Winter and Spring concert dates are set, I will publish them on Digital

Backpack, on my Teacher Page and also send a notice home. The 5th Grade Band Step-

Up Concert with the 6th Grade TMS Band is scheduled for Friday, April 6, 2018, 6:15 to

7:00 p.m. and students report to TMS by 6:00 p.m. I look forward to the chance to help

each student experience growth in their musicianship and leadership skills this year!
