PRINCIPAL’S CORNER
Inspirational Messages at T.I.S.
Thanks to the PTO for funding the purchase and installation of inspirational signage throughout the building. This initiative began last year with the purchase of many kindness and welcoming themed posters hung by paraprofessional Mrs. Laurie White.
The initiative continued throughout the summer as local artist Alecks Babey painted a beautiful mural at the base of our main staircase.
Finally, our own Mrs. Grabowski and her father made large vinyl decals and hung them throughout the building.
Thanks to Mrs. Laurie White, Mr. Alecks Babey, Mrs. Kristen Grabowski, Mr. George Deliman for all their hard work aimed at adding to our welcoming atmosphere.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT T.I.S.
Third Grade Third graders have made a great transition to TIS! We had a PBIS assembly where all students learned the HAWK rules. Teachers went over cafeteria, hallway, bathroom, recess, and bus rules during the assembly. The kids soaked it all in and have been doing a great job being HAWKS at Tolland Intermediate School.
Most classes have started Writer’s Workshop. Students may have already decorated their Writer’s Notebook or will be doing it shortly. Classes have started the narrative writing unit, where they are working to craft true stories. These stories are about real events, not a whole vacation or day, but rather a favorite moment about something. Students will focus on elaboration with specific details that create an image in the reader’s mind.
Some third-grade classrooms are piloting new reading programs. Two classrooms are doing the Journeys program and two are doing the Wonders program, while two classrooms are still using the Houghton Mifflin program we have been using for several years. We are excited to see which program we will go with for the future.
In addition to that exciting curriculum news, we are starting the Fundations program. This is a phonics program. Most students are familiar with it from second grade.
There are new science standards and we are getting started with Forces and Motion. We have some great hands on activities to go with this unit.
Lastly, in math we are starting with a unit on place value. We are working with numbers to 10,000. The kids are doing amazing with all of this. We are so excited to work with your children this year, they are a great bunch!
Fourth Grade We're back, and off to a great 2018-2019 school year! Our 4th graders seem excited and eager to see
what the year will bring. In math we've started the year off working in different stations focusing on their multiplication facts, multi-digit addition and subtraction, bar modeling (from 3rd grade), and our new online program called Reflex Math. The kids really seem to enjoy the activities and earning the fun math games the program has to offer. We will start our first unit soon with whole numbers for chapter 1 and then jumped into chapter 2 continuing that work in estimation and number theory. Classes are hard at work to continue working on the multiplication fact fluency that will bring them wonderful success in math throughout the year.
This year we’re doing things a little different in science and social studies. Each teacher will be teaching these two subjects to their own classrooms. In years past, we have switched for science and social studies on a daily or weekly basis, but this year because of the new NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) we believe it’s in the best interest to teach science and social studies across the curriculum by incorporating our units into LA during reading and writing.
In language arts, 4th grade is looking at story elements and structure in narrative focusing our first unit on realistic fiction. Not only do the students have the chance to read realistic fiction but they are also well underway writing their own realistic fiction pieces making sure to include character descriptions, setting, a problem, and or course, the solution.
Fifth Grade
Fifth graders are off to a great start. Students have settled into their routines nicely and they enjoy switching classes.
In reading, students enjoyed listening to short stories as they learned Notice and Note signposts. Students will be expected to flag these reading strategies as they read.
Writer’s Workshop is in full swing. Ask your child to share their current personal narrative piece.
Fifth grade math students are reading and writing large numbers and working on comparing and ordering numbers. Students are creating beautiful maps in social studies. This map project is a review of map skills.
The first science unit of the year is Earth, Moon, and Sun. The fifth graders are currently learning about the reason for seasons and the reason for night and day.
Hope to see you at the 5th grade curriculum night on Thursday, September 27th. Curriculum night will begin with a brief introduction in the APR at 6:30 followed by a classroom presentation from your child’s homeroom teacher. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year!

Recorder Order Time
Dear Parents,
The third grade curriculum uses recorders to teach music literacy. Each student needs to have his or her own recorder. For health and educational purposes, we have found that it is better for each student to own their own recorder and bring it to school for their music classes. The recorder is an investment in your child’s music education. All the third and fourth grade music classes use recorders. I would like to give you the opportunity to purchase a recorder
and recorder strap through the school. This is of no advantage to
our school, or myself, but it is advantageous for you. If we order
now we can get the discount and ensure that the recorders will be
ordered and shipped in time for our use. Therefore, I am offering
you the opportunity to order a recorder and strap through Tolland
Intermediate School. Just fill in the form below and send in a check
for $7.00 for a recorder and strap made out to the Tolland
Intermediate school student activity fund. Please return the check
and the form before Wednesday, October 31, 2018. The
recorders and straps will be delivered and we will begin using them
in class at the end of January.
The students will be playing the recorders at their third grade
concert. The recorder straps allow the students to sing, dance, and
play other musical instruments during music class and at the
concert while being hands free of their recorder until it is time to
play their recorder music.
Thank you and I hope I have made getting a recorder for
your child just a little easier,
Ms. Judith Baker
