DECORATINGBy Chantal LamersSPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE
When it comes to a post-sunrise rummage at the Candle-stick Park Antiques and Collectibles Faire, Rob Delamaterhas a no-fail formula.
At 8 a.m. one Sunday, under that cliched blanket of fog,Delamater, 44, demonstrates his preparedness with well-planned layers: a wool sweater, button-up shirt and long-sleeve T under a jacket with lots of pockets. All perfect forpeeling away should the sun win its scuffle with the clouds.
Delamater is the co-owner of Lost Art Salon in the MissionDistrict. He and his business partner, Gaétan Caron, sourceoriginal collections of modern-era art (1900s to 1960s) direct-ly from the estates of forgotten artists. The two lovingly pay

Flea-market hoppingFlea markets are experiencing a revival thanks to a trend towardnovel goods that add layers of curiosity and conversation. Weteamed with local tastemakers for schooling in all things flea. Todayand over the next two weeks, we’ll visit the Bay Area’s three bigmarkets and explore how to create authentic collections and in-tegrate vintage finds into existing decors. Next week: Kristina Tosiof Esty shop Cottage farm shops S.F.’s Alemany Flea Market.
Adding candles to thishand-blown piece couldmake a nice centerpiece.

What the hot dog is to Co-ney Island, the stinging nettleis to Dorset County, England.Apparently, the world’s sting-ing-nettle-eating champion-ship — wherein challengerseat as many stinging nettles aspossible in an hour — beganthere in 1986 when two farm-ers got into an argument at alocal pub over whose field had

tribute to the work of eachartist by painstakingly re-searching and documentingtheir incredible stories andhistories. Their curated in-ventory includes some 5,000works priced from about $350to $750.
The Salon, which Delama-ter justly characterizes as a1920s Paris apartment meetsindustrial urban loft, isjammed beautifully with aneclectic thrill of period paint-ings, drawings, sculpturesand ceramics that theyscooped up as the devotedcaretakers of lost artist collec-tions.
That means Delamater hasno need to comb flea marketsfor art. As far as antiquesdealers go, he has the unusu-al luxury of reserving jauntsto the vintage market forscores to festoon his own700-square-foot MissionDistrict apartment.
Naturally, his nest is amotley collection of vintagecool. The enviable art, fur-nishings and accessories areclean, graphic, colorful andbold, gleaned from across the20th century. “And I’m partic-ularly attracted to things thatare handmade or have a one-of-a-kind feel to them,” saysDelamater.
With a decade of antiques-market shopping behind him,Delamater has honed athoughtful, effective formula.
“I always start out at theback and work my wayagainst the crowd,” he says. Itcan take hours to wadethrough hundreds of fleamarket booths, but Delamaterkeeps a good pace. “I’m ascanner. I look at a booth andassess whether I want to goin. I move on if it’s not a goodfit for me.”
As he passes the ATMmachine on the way in, headvises that shoppers hit thebank before getting to themarket. Most vendors don’taccept checks or credit cards,
and machines sometimesbreak down or run dry.
That aforementioned jack-et, the one with all the pock-ets, is a necessity for tuckingaway a camera and measur-ing tape. (You shouldn’t counton vendors to have one whenthe need arises to check di-mensions.) He also stashesaway stiff pieces of paper forwriting down booth numberswhere he’s made purchases.(He only carries what he canfit in his backpack. He’llscoop up the rest at the end ofthe day.)
“You will have a muchmore productive and satis-fying experience at the flea ifyou come with a list of a cou-ple of things that you areactively looking for,” he says.(On his list for the day: arearug, desk lamp and vintagewater glasses.)
“And it’s always a goodidea to take the measure-ments with you (sense ofscale is off when you’re out-side your living environ-ment). That said, if you staytoo fixated on just the practi-cal things, you may miss outon a magic little find. So stayopen to finding somethingtotally unexpected and won-derful.”

Artistic reuse: Rethink how you might use pieces (an old ice cream canister repurposed as a garbagecan or umbrella holder, or a pair of old snowshoes as wall art, for example). Delamater stops to marvelat the virtues of this odd glass fishbowl that could be turned into an eye-catching terrarium.
Smart math: An anthology of old Hollywood postcards producedby the Museum of Modern Art circa 1980 catches Delamater’s eye.The vendor offers the collection of roughly 30 cards as a set for$65. Delamater says a grouping like this is perfect for using asnote cards, which he reasons isn’t a bad deal as they come out tobe about $2 each.
Plan ahead: Keepbirthdays and holidaysin mind while you’rebrowsing. When Dela-mater comes across apottery bank in theshape of a polar bear($12), he says it’s justthe kind of gift he likesto pick up for one ofhis nieces or nephews.

Good notes: One or a groupingof these well-patinaed latexglove molds ($20 for one; $35for two) makes a novel way tointegrate something sculpturalonto a bookshelf.
Don’t hesitate to ask: Don’t leta price tag deter you from bar-gaining with vendors. On itemswithout tags, Delamater usuallyasks, “Can you give me an ideawhat you’re asking on this?” Ifthe price is close to what he’swilling to pay, and without goingtoo low, he’ll follow up by askingif the vendor will consider a pricecloser to his budget.
