TIPPECANOE MIDDLE SCHOOL MAY 2012 NEWSLETTER The mission of Tippecanoe Middle School is to provide educational experiences that are a continuation of the intermediate school and a transition to the high school focusing on academic, social, emotional, and physical growth in a nurturing environment that will contribute to success as responsible students and citizens. FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK… May not only brings warmth, rain, and flowers, but also the Ohio Achievement Assessment. Our staff and students have been working diligently all year to prepare and we expect to see great things in both the area of achievement and student growth. Congratulations to our middle school Physical Education teacher Peg Osborn for being named by the Tipp Educational Endowment as Teacher of the Year. As many of you know she is an unbelievable teacher, coach, and role model for our students and is always looking at doing the right thing for our students. Please remind your students of the importance of this final quarter. The final quarter reinforces good work and study habits before moving on to the next grade and it also determines athletic eligibility for the fall sports season. Congratulations to our “MarchStudents of the Month: 6 th graders – Allie Henry, Laura Fink, Zach Carner, Frank Catrone; 7 th Graders – Emma Smith, Emily Walker, Nicole Lange, Sarah Sheranko, and 8 th graders – Kelsey Wertz, Thomas Chaney, Ally Chitwood, and Tori Merrick! The students received a certificate to Texas Roadhouse for a free Kids Meal. “Leadership” was the theme for the month of March. Great job students! If you have UNPAID School Fees please contact the Office @ 667-8454 to set up a payment plan. Unpaid fees may result in being denied certain privileges such as attending and/or receiving an award, athletic participation, ordering a yearbook, dances, field day, etc. PLEASE note balances do carry forward from year to year and building to building. Tippecanoe Middle Schools current balance of outstanding school fees is: $5,564.85. Thank you for your help in getting these paid and thank you to those who have already paid or have a payment plan in place.

Tippecanoe Middle School opened their Track season on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon (4/3/12) against Mad River with the Boys and Girls Teams both finishing in 1st place! 8th grade Long Jumper, Alyssa Crusey, broke the school record of 15’1” set in 1996 on her first jump of the afternoon, by flying to a new record of 15' 7"! Again on Saturday morning (4/7/12) we had both Boys and Girls win 1st place as well as winning the Combined Score Trophy! That same day Cameron Gibbs, Trenton Fay, Sam Fearing, and Jordan Sherrill, broke the school record in the boys 4X100 by running a 50.42! They broke the 10 year old record by more than second! The TMS Track Team was in action at Wayne (4/9/12). Both teams ran extremely well with the Girls finishing in 2nd place and the Boys finishing in a very respectable 3rd place. This all came against some great competition. The 4x100 team Of Sam Fearing, Jordan Sherrill, Cameron Gibbs, and Jakob Prall broke the record from this past Saturday last night by running a blistering fast 49.89!

Congratulations to Jay Bell for swimming at the YMCA National Championships in Greensboro, NC on Easter weekend! He qualified for the 200 Free Relay, where he set his best time for the year. He also was able to time trial the 50 Free to achieve his personal best time of 23.27.

It is with great pleasure and excitement that we can announce our 2011/2012 Teacher of the Year – Mrs. Peggy Osborn! Mrs. Osborn was nominated by 12 peers, across three buildings, and 9 students. Mrs. Osborn is in her 35th year of teaching and she has coached over 51 seasons of athletics during this time. She touches the life of every student, staff member, and family in our district! Mrs. Osborn will be retiring at the end of this school year and her legacy will live on forever. To celebrate this prestigious award the Tippecanoe Educational Endowment Annual Benefit was “Color Your Dreams…Amazing” with the Dinner Theater presentation being “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. The event took place on Sat, 4/21, @ Tippecanoe High School. Congratulations Mrs. Osborn!!!

Congratulations to Ally Chitwood! On April 12th, 2012 Ally presented her Science Fair Project to the Officer's Club at WPAFB where she received an award from SAME (Society of American Military Engineers) and $150.00! Great Job ALLY!

The STEM Club at Tippecanoe Middle School went to Huffman’s Prairie on April 12th where the Wright Brothers perfected the world’s first airplane. The students took a tour of Huffman Prairie and saw the Wright Brother’s first hanger and runway. The students were also given the opportunity to explore the visitor’s center and try the 1905 Wright Flyer Simulator on the trip. The STEM Club is supported by the STEAM Boosters and the fieldtrip was possible by a grant through the Ohio Science Grant Consortium.

TMS participated in the Pennies for Patients drive which supports the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The different opportunities that were offered to help raise funds for this great organization was a student vs. student dodgeball tournament, a contest between classes to win eating lunch outdoors every Thursday (weather permitting) and a fun filled dodgeball tournament between the staff and students just to name a few. The 8th grade was victorious and won the outdoor lunch by donating $99.14! TMS was able to donate $764.28 in all! Thanks to all who participated as well as Miss Myers, Miss Drexler and the TMS Student Council for organizing the event!

Senator Beagle was at TMS! Students were honored by Senator Bill Beagle and the members of the Senate of the 129th General Assembly of Ohio for their outstanding accomplishments! Ethan Joseph & Alissa Buynak for their artwork and the TMS Girls 7th & 8th grade Basketball teams for winning the Central Buckeye Conference Championship. Great Job Everyone and Thank You Senator Beagle!

Congratulations to the TMS DI Engineering Structure Team who came in 1st place in the weight division at the State Competition in Mt. Vernon, Ohio! Their structure held 650+ pounds! The team consisted of TMS students: Zach Carner, Gretchen Riggle, and Angelo Mihalyo.

Good Luck to Adam Buynak, Brandon Bischoff, Thomas Chaney, Allison Chitwood & Samantha Rowland who will be competing in the Ohio Academy of Science State Science Day at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, May 5th! These students will also present their projects to the Tipp City Rotary Club on Wednesday, May 30th.

Congratulations to the Middle School Softball Team as they took 2nd place at the Graham Breast Cancer Awareness Tournament over the weekend! Team members are: Brooke Musick, Alli Henry, Meghan Kauffman, Ashley Shepherd, Danielle Carter, Paige Phillips, Holly Green, Hannah Lowe, Jordan Niswonger, Taylor Yeager, Payton Brown, Taylor Haggerty, Laura Fink, Hailee Varvel, Kaitlyn Stocker, Maddie Gibler, and Sierra Sutton. Great Job Girls!!!

Emma Smith was in The Tippecanoe Gazette! She wrote an article about her experience of meeting an author which was selected and published by The Tippecanoe Gazette in the Wednesday, 5/2/12 edition.
