The Community Hospital ActionGroup, as formed at a recent publicmeeting in Thurles, have announcedtheir plan to hold a public rally toallow the people of Thurles and thesurrounding areas to voice their dis-content and frustration over the re-cent HSE decision to close 22 respitebeds in the Community Hospital ofthe Assumption, Thurles. This fol-lows on from a strong turnout at alocal public meeting.

The public rally will be held on Sat-urday the 12th of November and willcommence at 2pm at the CommunityHospital of the Assumption. Thecrowd will then march to LibertySquare in Thurles, where local repre-sentatives will be asked to addressthe crowd.

The Community Hospital of the As-sumption was disproportionately hit

by recent cuts announced by theHSE. This is despite the fact that theCommunity Hospital remained with-in budget at all times. This unfairnesscannot continue.

The Action group are hoping for apowerful display of solidarity fromthe people of Thurles and all sur-rounding areas. They are calling onall people in the area to come out andsupport this worthy cause. Unlessthere is a strong statement made tothe Government it is feared that therewill be further bed closures and addi-tional loss of services. It is hoped thatthousands will turn out on the day.

North Tipp author Brendan Lynchhas published the first book to cele-brate Dublin’s UNESCO City of Lit-erature award, PRODIGALS ANDGENIUSES. The Writers and Artistsof Dublin’s Baggotonia. It will belaunched by Arts Minister JimmyDeenihan in Dublin on Novermber15.Foreword writer J. P. Donleavy said;“All the writers are here from SamuelBeckett to Brendan Behan and Pat-rick Kavanagh. The book is a worthytribute to our wonderful writers andpoets who battled against the odds inthe latter half of the twentieth centu-ry.”Brendan Lynch from Toomevara re-called, “I saw most of these writers inDublin as a youngster in the 1950s.Many people derided their lifestyleand their work. But they persistedand it’s great to see them now beingacknowledged. “Baggotonia is the Dublin equivalentof London’s Fitzrovia or the Leftbank of Paris Centred on Baggot andLeeson Streets, and girdled by theGrand Canal, it is the unmapped vil-lage of writers, artists and ne’er-do-wells which in the 1950s becameknown as Baggotonia. Its inhabitantsand habitués include four winners ofthe Nobel Prize for Literature andnearly every nineteenth and twentiethcentury Irish writer of note. FromOscar Wilde, Oliver St. John Goga-rty, George Moore and George Ber-nard Shaw to Samuel Beckett,Elizabeth Bowen, Seamus Heaney,James Joyce and Flann O’Brien.”PRODIGALS is based on interviewsand contemporary accounts and in-cludes chapters on censorship andaccounts of some of Ireland’s mostnotorious events, the Patrick Ka-

vanagh libel trial and the prosecutionof The Pike Theatre for alleged inde-cency in 1954. The book also paystribute to John Ryan, originally fromNewport, who launched the literarymagazine, Envoy, which foughtagainst censorship and first publishedmany of the struggling writers of theperiod. An accomplished artist, John exhibit-ed at the annual RHA shows and de-signed theatre sets for the Abbey,Gate and Olympia Theatres. Heplayed a major role inestablishing the Sandycove Martellotower as a Joyce Museum. A con-temporary insisted at John’s 1992funeral: “Few people did as much forIrish literature as John did in the leanfifties, when he provided hospitalityand encouragement to many an aspir-ing artist and writer. He was a Re-naissance man.”J. P. Donleavy concluded: "BrendanLynch’s book evokes vibrant memo-ries of an ancient Dublin. And couldthere be any other city in the worldmore worth speaking about? Oldfriends come back to life whoseminds still speak from the soul. An-cient sorrows remembered to haunt, but in which a bit of bright light stillglows."Brendan Lynch is a former Tipperarycounty cyclist. He has written sixbooks, including the award-winningGreen Dust.

The European Union commissionershave announced that agreement hasbeen reached to adopt English as thepreferred language for Europeancommunications, rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, it wasconceded that English spelling hadsome room for improvement and hasaccepted a five-year phased plan forwhat will be known as Euro-English(Euro for short). In the first year, ‘s’will be used instead of the soft ‘c’.Sertainly, sivil servants will resievethis news with joy. Also, the hard ‘c’will be replaced with ‘k.’ Not onlywill this klear up konfusion, but type-writers kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthu-siasm in the sekond year, when thetroublesome ‘ph’ will be replaced by‘f’. This will make words like‘fotograf’ 20 per sent shorter.

In the third year, publik akseptanse ofthe new spelling kan be expekted toreach the stage where more komp-likated changes are possible. Govern-ments will enkourage the removal ofdouble letters, which have alwaysben a deterent to akurate speling. 2011 was another successful year inthe relatively short history of theclub. The club has now 160 memberswith the vast majority of them beingplaying members. Our growing numbers of u 8s and u10s have enjoyed a great year oflearning the skills of Camogie andgaining friendships from differentnationalities in the community that isNenagh Eire Og Camogie club. Theycontinue to improve and enjoy them-selves under expert tuition in a con-trolled and safe environment. Our u 12s had two very competitiveteams and they had a very good yearwith the A team winning the A coun-ty final against Newport. It is a verywell balanced team with stars on eve-ry line. There was a lot of work doneduring the year and it paid off withthe county final win.The u 14s had the heartbreak of los-ing  two county finals in the A divi-sion this year. This takes it to fourcounty finals in two years, comingout of last years B competition it wasquite an achievement to qualify forboth county finals again this year this time at A level .As a club weneed to kick on and turn around thesenarrow defeats into victories. The U 15s got to the County A semifinal and lost out after an epic battleagainst a very experienced Toome-vara team. This team has plenty ofability and will be the cornerstone ofthe clubs drive forward to contest Acompetitions at Minor level in yearsto come.U16s lost out at County B semi finalstage to a wonderful Cahir team aftergiving their all throughout the year.Like the u 15s they will provide for-ward thrust into contesting Minor Acompetitions in years to comeOur Minors had a tough year at Bgrade but it was a learning experiencefor this very young teamOur Junior B team won the Munsterplate final and lost out to a very ex-

perienced Borrisoleigh team in thecounty Quarter Final. It was a histor-ic year for this team who won theclubs first ever adult competitionagainst Kilishen of Clare. After awonderful game Nenagh won out 2-05 to 3-0 .Team Captain Mary Dillo lifted the clubs first adult Trophy toscenes of absolute joy in the homeground of Mac Donagh park. Thisteam has been the driving force forthe club because they had to sufferterrible defeats over the years be-cause of their inexperience. Theynever dropped their heads and contin-ued on the slow and sometimes pain-ful path of gaining experience fromevery defeat and using it to their ad-vantage. They are a perfect exampleof patience and dedication to theircause, which was to get their day inthe sun which they grasped firmlywith both hands.St Marys Convent Nenagh who is animportant part of the clubs produc-tion line won the u 11 and u 13 ACumhann Na mBunscoil finals and StMarys Secondary school won thesenior A league with an ever growingnumber of Nenagh Eire Og teammembers. The club had an increasing presenceon Tipperary Panels throughout theyear. Hazel McAuliffe and MaeveCoffey represented their schools inthe Primary Games. Grace O BrienMichelle Collins and Rachel Maherrepresented the club at u 14 level.Alanna Morris Holly O Brien andAileen Duggan represented the clubat u 16 level while Ciara McGrathrepresented the club at Minor Inter-mediate and Senior levels.Alanna Morris and Aileen Dugganwon Munster and All Ireland honourswith the Tipperary u 16 team whileCiara McGrath won an All Irelandmedal with the Tipperary Minors. These All Ireland Medals are the firstthree All Ireland medals won byNenagh Eire Og club players while

Having looked at depression among theyoung and the elderly, I would now liketo consider it in a social context, includ-ing the basic social unit of the family. We have seen that the functioning of afamily has a significant relationship withdepression on children, and poor parent-ing and poor bonding with the primarycarer may leave a child vulnerable todepression in later life. The truth is thata depressed parent has difficulty in prop-er parenting. Undoubtedly, a depressedmember, young or adult, is a negativeand sometimes devastating experiencefor others in the family. It is particularlypainful if the depression is recurrent orchronic (ongoing), in which case it maycomplicate recovery from other illness-es. The depressed member may not beable to go to work, remain in bed forlong periods, isolate himself from otherfamily members, and perhaps be unableto manage minimal tasks. This negativ-ism and hopelessness can bring conflict, frustration, and confusion into the fami-ly. It is a depressing experience for theother members.Kameron Hardin and Marny Hall havesome points that might help you recog-nise if your partner has depression thatare worth mentioning. You might, forexample, notice a change in their per-sonality. They may have become moreserious and be smiling less, withdrawfrom social activities, become less chat-ty, grow silent, become careless, lessinterested in sex, frequently cry, andspeak in a monotone. Your partnermight begin to complain of physicalailments such as headaches and stom-ach-aches, and might be drinking morethan usual, or watching more televisionthan usual. Perhaps their style in clothesmay change, they may become less in-terested in what they wear, or begin towear dark clothes. Their sleeping patternmay also have changed, and they maybecome more anxious and worried espe-cially over money, bills and health, andsuffer a downward spiral of self-blameand self-criticism. Overall, the relation-ship may feel awkward.Seeing these behaviours may preventserious discord in the family, otherwisefamily members, who may be sympa-thetic at the beginning, may eventuallylose patience and see the depressed per-son as burdensome, unreasonable andperhaps obstinate and headstrong, andmaking no effort to help themselves. Asthe non-depressed members of the fami-ly become intolerant they may as usesuch phrases as ‘your problem is reallygetting on my nerves’, just pull yourselftogether’,’ you really need a shrink’, ‘ifyou don’t do something about this, I’mleaving’, ‘look on the bright side, youstill have your health (job, money, looks’), ‘cheer up, things can’t really bethat bad’ and so on. It is hard for family

members to put themselves in the de-pressed member’s shoes, but it is theonly way to help, otherwise the with-drawing of support may only increasethe sufferer’s depression.Emerging studies appear to have founda pattern of depression history in somefamilies, and this may help membersmay be more understanding of what ishappening. Some writers are confidentthat chronic or severe depression may bepart of a family’s genetics, but I suspectthat depression can be learned, andpassed from generation to generation. There is also the question of how mem-bers of a family interact with each other. If some of these have poor attachmentstyles (cannot properly relate) so thatthey avoid intimacy, this can alienatehelpful members and therefore increasedepression. There are many other con-siderations that may influence patternsof family depression such as abuse, sub-stance abuse, alcoholism, and otherharmful and negative circumstances.Constance Hammen and Edward Wat-kins agree with this, but advocate thathereditary factors may make some peo-ple more likely to get depressed whenfaced with such negative factors. Myfeeling, however, is that people learn tobe depressed. This may stretch over sev-eral generations and result in familymembers becoming vulnerable to de-pression. New research involving wom-en in Australia show a significantassociation between abuse or combinedabuse (physical, sexual and emotional)by a partner and depression. Abuse anddepression have a devastating effect ona family.
