Dog is man's best friend because theyspend so much time together in the doghouse.

This guy was watching TV as his wifewas out cutting the grass during the hotsummer. He finally worked up the en-ergy to go out and ask his wife whatwas for supper.Well, his missus was quite irritatedabout him sitting in the air conditionedhouse all day while she did all thework, so she scolded him. "I can't be-lieve you're asking me about supperright now! Imagine I'm out of town, goinside and figure dinner out yourself."So he went back in the house and fixedhimself a big steak, with potatoes, gar-lic bread and tall glass of iced tea.The wife finally walked in about thetime he was finishing up and askedhim, "You fixed something to eat? Sowhere is mine?""Huh? I thought you were out oftown."

I was at a once in a lifetime corporatehospitality at a premier football gameand I got an urgent call from the wifesaying her mum's been hit by a bus andhas only hours to live.

Fifteen minutes later, I'm at the hospi-tal and the wife's hugging me. "Thank-you darling, I'm so sorry you'll missyour football.""Don't worry, love, I wouldn't miss this- I'm taping it and I'll watch it later."Dunno why she got so upset when Istarted setting up the camcorder.

I got home from the pub last night andmy wife said, "I can't believe how in-toxicated you are."Denying it I said, "I'm not drunk."She said, "Yes you are."I said, "No I'm not."She said, "Can you tell the time?"I walked up to the clock and said, "I'mnot drunk."

Every year on their wedding anniversa-ry my boss, Jimmy, and his wife cele-brated by staying at the same resorthotel. On their 25th anniversary theybooked their usual room. But when thehotel's manager escorted them upstairs, they were in for a big surprise. "Theremust be some mistake," Jimmy said."This looks like the bridal suite.""It's okay," the manager reassured him."If I put you in the ballroom, thatdoesn't mean you have to dance."

Have you seen howexpensive funerals arenowadays?Just before I die, I'mgoing to change myname to 'OFF'. Thatway, when the hearseis driving to thechurch, it will havedisplayed on top of mycoffin in flowers:R.I.P. OFF

One afternoon, a wom-an was in her backyard hanging the laun-dry when an old, tired-looking dog wanderedinto the yard. Thewoman could tell fromthe dog's collar andwell-fed belly that hehad a home. But whenshe walked into the house, the dog fol-lowed her, sauntered down the hall andfell asleep in a corner. An hour later, he went to the door, andthe woman let him out.The next day the dog was back. He re-sumed his position in the hallway andslept for an hour. This continued forseveral weeks.

Curious, the woman pinned a note tohis collar: "Every afternoon, your dogcomes to my house for a nap."The next day he arrived with a differ-ent note pinned to his collar: "We haveten children. He's trying to catch up onhis sleep."

that date, within the club working withunderage teams has been vetted or hassubmitted a Garda Vetting ApplicationForm. As a means of assisting clubs inidentifying who has submitted a GardaVetting form each club has been circulat-ed with a list of members, received fromthe National Children’s Office, who havesubmitted a vetting application form tothe GAA. Since June 2009 the GAA hasmade considerable progress in the vettingof persons who work on behalf of theGAA with children (under 18 years) andvulnerable adults. In Tipperary there hasbeen an excellent response to the processby clubs, referees, etc as we continue tointegrate good child welfare proceduresand practices in our work with underageteams in the GAA. Garda Vetting of per-sons working with children within theGAA is mandatory and failing to do thisby clubs or individuals is a breach ofGAA procedures. Clubs having com-pleted this census will be required toidentify if they have personnel not vettedworking with children and young personsin the club. This information must beforwarded to Jim Lynch, County VettingCo-Ordinator at 086-8443285 by Febru-ary 21 2011. The County Board willthen forward the information to the Na-tional Children’s Office, Croke Park.

Superb from Yeti from Octavia from Fabia Facelift

Dear Editor

I would like to respond to anarticle in the Tatler last month, entitled“From Boston Bridge to Pheasant Islandon Christmas Day”. Congratulations tothe author for putting pen to paper, onthe journey of the river Suir, from itsinfancy on the Devil’s Bit Mountain toits merging with the great AtlanticOcean. The author recalls names andplaces along the river Suir in Thurlessuch as, The Cart Road, The Furry Hills(The Furzes), The Bishops, The Gudg-eon Hole and The Odgrie etc, which areprobably just a shallow memory in theminds of Thurles people today.

The author mentions the Odgrie (thecorrect spelling is Oseiry), from my re-search this area was located wherePheasant Island is today. The Oseiry wascovered in Reed Spires (Water Reeds)which were used for Thatching roofs inthe old days. The article has opened upthe floodgates of my memory in relivingmy childhood along with hundreds ofothers from the locality and other areasof the town, who spent many a day ex-ploring the mysteries of the river Suirdown by the Well Lane in Thurles.

Those young and young at heart enjoyedmany a summer on the banks of the riverSuir.

For many a decade access was gained  tothe banks of the Suir through the open-ing of the “Well Lane” situated besideSweeney’s Bakery on Mitchel Street. Atthe end of this lane there is a well whichlocals used for its natural spring water. The Well today still retains the coolspring water, which has quenched thethirst of many a weary traveller andexplorer that frequent its majestic sur-roundings. From my research which isstill ongoing, I have learned that the wellwas known as “Toberskeheen” or“Tobarskeheen”, (the well of the smallblack thorn bush) dating back to theearly 1800s.

I can recall many a generation of fami-lies from different areas such as, MitchelStreet (Quarry St.), Loughtagalla(Bowling Green) and Kickham Street(The Pike) etc, spending many asummer’s day enjoying the wonderfulnatural amenities that existed and stillexist today down by the well lane, whichis a hidden treasure. Thurles town coun-cil and the people of Thurles are crying

out for a town’s park, an amenity areafor the benefit of all the town and itscitizens. If we just stop and think for amoment, and look beyond the concretestructures and steel gates of our town, which hides an abundant of wonderfulnatural resources that could benefit bothThurles and its citizens. We would seethat a “Thurles Town Park” alreadyexists, it just needs to be developed. Iwill use a quote from a good friend ofmine “They are those that let thingshappen, and they are those that makethings happen.” lets unite and make“Thurles Town Park” a reality not just adream.

Regards Paddy Loughnane

The Young Munster Rugby Team stopped off at Brendan’s Bar, Roscrea fol-lowing their 13-11 defeat to St Mary’s in Dublin on Saturday. Pictured in the‘ruck’ above are Derek Tobin, Brendan Devane and Young Munster CaptainGer Slattery.

Already a popular sight on Irish roadsthe Octavia RS now has a smaller sib-ling. The all new Fabia RS first present-ed at the Geneva Motorshow is nowavailable to test drive at Škoda retailersnationwide.

Powered by a 180bhp 1.4 TSI direct in-jection petrol engine the Fabia RS is thefastest production Škoda ever producedcompleting a 0-100km/h dash in 7.3seconds on its way to a top speed of 225km/h. Performance is achieved thanks todual-charging via a Turbo Charger and amechanically driven Super Charger.

The transmission is equally as advancedusing a seven-speed DSG twin-clutchgearbox that allows extremely efficientgear shifting in automatic mode or viapaddle shifts located on the steeringwheel.

Efficiency has not been sacrificed at theexpense of performance; the Fabia re-turns 6.4 l/100km on the combined cy-cle and emitting 148g/km of CO2 hasannual road tax of €302.

Sports seats and a 3 spoke multi-func-tion steering wheel are unique to theFabia RS while the exterior has a lowstange forging strong visual links withthe RIC winning Fabia S2000 rally car.Front and rear spoilers, twin exhausts, integrated LED lights and 17-inch‘Gigaro’ alloy wheels differentiate theFabia RS further from other models inthe Fabia range.

Raymond Leddy, marketing manager atŠkoda Ireland said: “We’re very excitedabout the Fabia RS, it’s a very uniquecar offering exceptional driving dynam-ics and value that our customers havecome to expect from Škoda”.

Priced at €22,690 Škoda Ireland expectto retail thirty Fabia RS vehicles in2011. As an alternative to the Fabia RS,Škoda have also launched a Fabia SportLine which retains many of the sportyattributes of the RS but with a broaderrange of engines including a 1.2 70bhppetrol from €15,270.

In a statement issued this week NenaghMayor Seamie Morris gave details ofhis Sports Tourism Project.

“In my capacity as Mayor of Nenagh, Ihave decided to increase the sportstourism grants which I successfullyinitiated last year. The potential thatTipperary has as a tourist attraction hasnot been realised by the relevant statebodies and has been poorly served bythe inability to include North Tipperaryin any Midwest strategy, beyond merelip service. What we need in North Tipperary is tocoordinate all the tourist providers, along with our sporting sectorproviders, and encourage them to enticepeople to the area. Nenagh TownCouncil has led the way in promotingsports tourism with our sports tourismgrants last year. All the sports clubs andorganisations in Nenagh are greatambassadors for the town with touringgroups, who always leave with apositive image of the locality.

My Mayor’s project this year will takesports tourism to a new level. Over thelast year, I have made contact withteams from all over the world and havealways asked them if they would beinterested in coming to Nenagh. On StPatricks Day 2011, the first group ofpeople are coming all the way fromKansas, to play Nenagh Ormond in anUnder 19 rugby game.

Next Friday I will give a civic receptionto John Delaney, Chief Executive of theF.A.I., in recognition of his fantasticwork in promoting soccer at thegrassroots level. This civic reception ispart of a wider project by Nenagh TownCouncil in thanking the associations for

the fantastic facilities that we have inour town. Christy Cooney, UachtarainCumann Luathcleas Gael, has alreadybeen a worth recipient. The benefits ofthese facilities to our local organisationsare very important, for without thesefacilities we could not bring groups andteams to our town.

As Mayor, I am also going to sponsor afootball tournament for the unemployedthis year. Each competition will have aset of jerseys sponsored by the Mayorfor the winners and each jersey willhave a “visitnenagh.com” logo. Thiswebsite, which I set up in my capacityas Mayor, will help any business offer-ing tourism products to advertise theirproducts on this website for a year forfree. It will also have a description ofthe town and its local amenities. In May, as part of the European Yearof the Volunteer, I will run a “night ofheroes” which will honour greatNenagh community activists and theirfamilies for their dedication to ourtown. Aiden Ryan of Nenagh A.F.C.,Jack Kennedy of Nenagh Eire Og, Mi-lo Gleeson of Nenagh Ormond R.F.C.,Brendan Tracey for his dedication tophotography and a special award willgo to Mike Burns who has five all Ire-land medals and is one of Nenagh EireOg’s greatest sons. I look forward toyour support for these projects whichwill be a small token gesture from meas Mayor of the town I love, but moreimportantly a town that deserves ourdedication to it. I also look forward tothe new county manager’s tourismproject which I hope will includesports tourism grants. I thank NenaghTown Council also for its unswervingsupport for these projects.”

Mayor Morris LaunchesHis Sports Tourism Project

to be decided at a later date. Theclub has grown from strength tostrength and it cost €13,000 to runlast year making fundraising one ofthe priorities for the new committee.Training resumes for u14s u16s u18sand Junior Bs next weekend all play-ers will be notified by text in thenext week. If anyone is interested injoining any of these teams pleaseemail [email protected] orcontact any of the committee mem-bers. We would be delighted to wel-come new members to the club.

Sally Bee’s Recipe for Life is as good asits title: it really is health eating for realpeople. Bee believes that no mealshould take longer to cook than it doesto eat, so her recipes suit busy people aswell as those who are interested in howto eat healthier food while not compro-mising on convenience.Bee’s recipes are also very practical. Some of them simply give everyday in-gredients a new twist that will make yousit up and take notice. Her idea of a fruitmezze for kids will enchant the mostfruit-unfriendly adult too – and it’s real-ly easy to prepare. If you are looking for healthy, heart-friendly, easy-to-prepare recipes thatwill keep your family interested in food,

this is thebook foryou. And while the book will suit thosewho don’t like to spend much time inthe kitchen, its smart ideas will also in-spire dedicated cooks like myself.Sally’s Bee’s The Recipe for Life:healthy eating for real people is 10% offduring February at Sheelagh na Gigbookshop, Cloughjordan, which is openWed-Thu 10.00am-5pm, Fri-Sat 10am-6pm and Sunday 1pm-6pm. It is a real coup for Thurles to haveTom Courtenay on the stage of TheSource Arts Centre on Tuesday 8thFebruary with his funny and evoca-tive show about the life of poet, Phil-ip Larkin. Tom has had a fantasticcareer, both on stage and screen andhas starred in many great milestonesof cinema. His career began in the1960’s when he was in The Loneli-ness of the Long Distance Runnerand Billy Liar. He was also in DavidLean’s Dr. Zhivago playing the part ofthe idealistic Pasha. For most of theseventies Tom followed his passionfor the theatre and played many clas-sic roles. In the eighties he returned tothe big screen when he starred along-side Albert Finney in The Dresser. Hewas nominated for an Oscar for hisportrayal of the hard done by assistantdealing with an overbearing alcoholicactor. Tom continues to appear on thestage, television and in cinema, re-cently he was in The Golden Compassplaying alongside Nichole Kidmanand Daniel Craig.

Pretending To Be Me sees him takeon the part of Philip Larkin, one ofBritain’s most well known post warpoets. Famous for his outright opin-ions and eccentricity, he once re-marked that he would not do lecturetours of universities and other institu-tions as he would only be goingaround “pretending to be me”. Theshow shows Larkin in the process ofmoving house, surrounded by all the

memories ofhis life. Thisfunny yet poi-gnant showgives us a viewof the worldthrough theeyes of a veryunique person-ality.

Pretending To Be Me is at The SourceArts Centre on Tuesday 8th Februaryat 8pm Tickets €25 / €23 concession. For Bookings please call the Box Of-fice on 0504 90204 or log on towww.thesourceartscentre.ie

Candidate.ie is an experimental re-search project which aims to tracksocial media activity in the forth-coming Irish General Election cam-paign. It’s a pretty straightforwardidea – collect links to everycandidate’s profile on social net-working sites and present themalong with their rivals in each con-stituency. In that way, visitors tothe site can easily find links to theirlocal candidate’s profiles. In No-vember 2010, the founder ofcandidate.ie came across a coupleof articles on the internet whichsuggested that the results of the USmid-term elections, ‘be they con-

gressional, gubernatorial or other-wise’, could have been almostaccurately predicted using the Fa-cebook fan count for the candidatesin each race. At that time on thisside of the pond we had the Done-gal South-West by-election here, socandidate.ie kept an eye on the can-didates there. Candidate.ie foundthat the Facebook friend count ofeach of the candidates in the by-election acted as a very good pre-dictor of the number of first prefer-ence votes that they received. Nowcandidate.ie wants to apply thisprediction method nationwide inthe forthcoming general election. The founder of candidate.ie is Cia-rán Mc Mahon, a lecturer in psy-chology at Dublin Business School. You may also be familiar with Cia-rán from his other social mediaproject, PsychBook. You can fol-low updates about this project overon Twitter @Twallywan. There’salso a Facebook Page:Candidate.ie.

We did our own survey in the TippTatler and the details are on ourwebsite www.tipptatler.ie. We hopeto publish our findings in our nextissue.

There are formal steps that a counsellorcan propose to an abusive client to em-power them to halt their abusive behav-iours. This is proposed by BeverleyEngel in relation to emotional abuse, butit can be applied to other types of abuse.Engel and Connie Fourré outline 7 stepswhich have much in common:1. Admit to yourself that you areemotionally abusive, acknowledge thedamage you’ve done, and take responsi-bility for it. This is difficult because itwill make you ashamed, and make youguilty that you have caused pain to oth-ers. Apologising will ease the guilt, buteasing the shame is more difficult, be-cause you will feel exposed, and yourcarefully built self image will be sweptaway. But, feeling shame that you havehurt your partner is good shame, and it isalso necessary to remind yourself of thegood things you do in the relationship.Being totally consumed with shame, however, will not help either you or yourpartner.2. Understand why you abuse. Itmay be necessary to explore your child-hood for abuse. Very often people whowere abused as teenagers take their angerout on their partners. This is particularlytrue of men who were neglected by theirmother. Look at the characteristics ofabusers and see if you have any of them(some of these include a strong desire toremain in control, a tendency to blameothers for your own problems, difficultyempathising with others, a tendency tobe jealous and possessive, and a tenden-cy to be emotionally needy). Rememberthat you can do something about all ofthese symptoms, because they are eitherlearned or spring from a feeling of inse-curity or self-esteem, which can betraced to your childhood.3. Understand your pattern andwork on your unfinished business fromthe past. To do this you must acknowl-edge that you have beenabused/neglected by your parents andhave learned abusive behaviours fromone or both of them. This is difficult todo partly because you may not want toblame your parents, or you may not wishto confront the buried feelings of angertowards your parent(s) that you are nowdirecting at your partner. Then you mustaccess your sadness for the abused childthat you were, an even more difficultthing to do. In the safety of yourcounsellor’s room confront your abusersthrough the unsendable letter, and makea safe place for you to vent your anger(perhaps through artwork). If you can,try to reach a place of forgiveness ofyour parents. This is the greatest healerof all. Learning a bit about your parents’background will help you in trying toforgive them.

4. This is the most important stepfor your own and your partner’s healing.Admit to your partner that you have beenemotionally abusive, and accept full re-sponsibility for it. This extremely diffi-cult step will stop you, the abuser, fromminimising or denying what you havedone. Your partner needs this admissionfor her wellbeing. This also involvesrecognising boundaries and respectingyour partner’s boundaries. Connie Four-ré also suggests that making amendsinvolves admitting their abusive past byadmitting it to key people, such as theirchildren, close friends, and perhaps peo-ple who understand abuse. This stepmakes it more likely that the abuse willnever commence again. Part of this is toavoid victim talk. Honesty is the onlypolicy in confronting abuse.5. Apologise to your partner orvictim, and work on developing empathyfor her and for others. In doing this youmust develop empathy for her by puttingyourself in her shoes and imagining whatit must have been like for her. Perhapsask her about the effects of your abuseon her. The apology should consist ofsincere regret, accepting full responsibil-ity, and a promise never to repeat theabusive behaviour and to take steps toeradicate it. It is also helpful never toindulge in vengeful and unjustified criti-cism of the victim or other people thiswill help you to break the pattern ofvindictive actions and words that hasbecome part of your abusive behaviour.
