STROLLING AROUNDThe Bregenzer shopping district shows that size is no substitute for quali-ty. Instead of the large and ubiquitous chains that visitors can find around the world, the Leutbühel and Kornmarktplatz offer a range of individual boutiques with unique and for the most part locally manufactured articles that offer guests a more personal shopping experience and service. But dispersed among these long-established and more traditional venues, visitors can also discover remarkable concept stores and relaxing cafés.

Whether you are feeling a little peckish or utterly famished, Bregenz offers all kinds of snack shacks and restaurants that cater to every taste:

• Regional und traditional home-style cooking • Award winning cuisine • International

GUIDED TOURS Many of the landmarks in Bregenz are instantly recognizable, but a se-cond glance can often reveal hidden treasures that are really worthwhile discovering. One of the best ways to understand and appreciate these local landmarks is having a local and competent tour guide recount their histories. Throughout the opera season, there are guided tours on a daily basis and during advent the city’s night watchman guides visitors around the medieval city centre on specific occasions. At other times during the year we ask guests to contact the local tourist information centre to arrange guided tours (Rathausstraße 35a).

The Explorer‘s Trail Starting at the Leutbühel, visitors can embark on a leisurely walk around town that takes about one hour. Following the Rathausstraße and extending into the Maurachgasse, you ascend the short incline into the medieval city centre (Oberstadt). Passing the Martinsturm, you continue along medieval city walls over cobbled streets to the Meißnerstiege, which you descend to exit the old town. The next two stops on your walk are the monastery Thalbach 5 and the parish church St. Gallus 6 , which are connected by the Ernst-Volkmann-Stairs. After this flight of stairs, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the lake and the distinctive corner tower of the Deuring Schlössle. A short walk from the Kapuziner cloister 7 you will enter the Thurn-und-Taxis park 8 , a wonderful green space surrounded by tall and imposing trees. The splendid palais at the entrance of the park houses a series of art exhibitions from a group of talented and creative local artists. Follow the Kirchstraße, with its small and charming boutiques and cafés, back down into the town centre on the way back to the Leutbühel.

Insidertipp: At Kirchstraße 29 is the house with Europe’s narrowest façade.

THE MEDIEVAL CITY CENTRE

1 Ehre-Guta-SquareThis squareˇs name hails back to a local legend: During the 15th century, an old woman called Guta heard members of a neighboring tribe called the Appenzeller planning an attack on the city. She quickly warned the Bregenzer garisson, who were able to defend and vanquish the Appenzeller. In subsequent years, at 9 pm in the winter time, the night watchmen of the city called out “Ehreguta” to honor her courage.

2 The Martinsturm | Martinsgasse 3bThe tower, constructed in 1601, is said to be the first edifice on Lake Constance to be built in the Barock style with the roof in the shape of an onion, which is the largest of its kind in central Europe. The tower is open to visitors between May and October and offers both a fantastic view and a permanent exhibition on the history of Bregenz.

3 The Deuring Schlössle | Ehregutaplatz 4At the far end of the Ehre-Guta-Platz stands a building that lends character to the medieval town centre: the Deuring Schlössle. For 150 years, this quaint and beautiful manor was home to the Deurings, an aristocratic family from Vorarlberg. From 1989 to 2015, this heritage building functioned as a high-class hotel and restaurant, but can now only be viewed from the outside.

4 The Old Town Hall | Graf-Wilhelm-Straße 14Between the Graf-Wilhelm Straße and the Epona Straße, visitors can admi-re the city’s largest half-timbered house. Built in 1662, the building was the administrative centre of Bregenz until the 19th century. Today, the building is used by private residents.

1 Parish Church St. Gallus | Kirchplatz 3The name of the church dates back to the Irish monk Gallus, who came to Bregenz as a missionary worker in 610 A.D. The oldest parish church in the lower part of Vorarlberg is first mentioned officially in scripture at the end of the 11th century. The interior of the church boasts magnificent stucco works and paintings along the ceilings and walls, as well as the silver altar in the left side chapel, which is one of the most celebrated and well-known masterpieces in Vorarlberg.

2 Cloister Mehrerau | Mehrerauerstraße 66 Right next on the banks of the lake is the Cistercian abbey Wettingen-Meh-rerau, which provides a home and a place to work and pray for the monks. A tour of this splendid abbey complex can be arranged in advance.

3 Herz-Jesu-Church | Kolpingplatz 1The 62-meter high red brick towers can be seen from a distance, making them one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. One of the most remar-kable facts surrounding this neo-gothic style church (built between 1905 and 1908) is that the construction costs were fully funded by the people of Bregenz.

1 The Vorarlberg Museum | Kornmarktplatz 1 Since its grand reopening in 2013, the museum has received a host of acco-lades for its innovative concept and architecture. What makes the museum so unique is its desire to not only portray and remember the past, but also highlight the present. Its focus is on archeology, (art) history and folklore. By arranging artefacts and viewing material in alphabetical order, the per-manent exposition „Buchstäblich Vorarlberg“ (Literally Vorarlberg) offers an original overview of the more than 160.000 objects on display.

2 The Vorarlberger Theater | Seestraße 2 The Kornmarktplatz is the cultural centre of the city, which houses not only the Vorarlberg Museum, but also the provincial theatre. The theatre’s repertoire includes classical dramas, literary adaptations, modern premiers and unique local pieces that have never been seen on stage before.

3 The Bregenz Art Gallery (KUB) | Karl-Tizian-PlatzDue to its modern translucent glass facade, the KUB is probably one of the most famous and recognizable landmarks in the city. Regularly alternating exhibitions of breathtaking contemporary art consistently attract visi-tors from all over the world. Artists from around the globe are especially drawn to this architectural masterpiece, designed by the world-renowned architect Peter Zumthor, as the building allows for more individual displays of art, one of the reasons why many of the exhibitions are tailor-made for Bregenz.

4 Nepomuk chapel | NepomukgasseMany years ago, the margins of Lake Constance extended right up to the Kornmarkt. According to local legend, after having nearly drowned in the lake as a boy, Dr. Franz Wilhelm Haas offered thanks to Saint Nepomuk by constructing this baroque chapel in 1757 and dedicating it to the patron saint and protector against floods and drowning.

5 The Post Office Building | Seestraße 5The construction of this magnificent building dates back to the year 1895. Besides housing the local post office and several office areas, the building also contains rooms for the ‘Bildraum Bodensee’, a local platform for artists origi-nating from Austria’s most Western province.

GALERIES AND MORE

Vorarlberg Library | Fluherstraße 4The library astounds visitors with its imposing dome and gallery surroun-ded by rows upon rows of classic and contemporary works. The library is housed in the old Benedictine monastery at the edge of the town’s forest. Here, at the foot of the Gebhardsberg, hikers, joggers and mountainbikers like to meet to start their expedition to the top of the mountain.

Art gallery Palais Thurn und Taxis | Gallusstraße 10This villa, built in 1848, is the home of the ‚Berufsvereinigung Bildender Künstlerinnen und Künstler Vorarlbergs‘, a group of local artists from Vorarlberg. Visitors can first view these contemporary art works inside and then relax in the park surrounded by ancient pine trees.

Metro Cinema | Rheinstraße 25The Bregenz motion picture theatre with its retro charme shows Hollywood blockbusters, as well as turkish and arthouse films in three halls.

Magazin 4 | Bergmannstraße 6A cultural atelier for open exchange and discussion, dance, theatre, music and performances of all kind.

Theater KOSMOS | Mariahilfstraße 29A separate cosmos slightly outside the centre of the city, but at the hear of the city’s cultural experience. Besides modern pieces relevant to the contemporary sociopolitical climate, the theatre also provides a platform for discussion, lectures, exhibitions and concerts.

BREGENZER FESTSPIELEExperiencing an operatic performance on the world’s largest floating stage under the clear night sky will leave lasting and unforgettable memo-ries that you will cherish all your life. Spectacular and internationally renowend stage designs are constructed on a bi-annual basis to cast the Bregenz water promenade in an entirely new light. Besides the copious and multifaceted programme of classics and premiers on the floating stage, additional theatrical masterpieces are performed in the modern opera hall, thereby guaranteeing that the annual operatic festival caters to every taste. A total of 200.000 visitors are enchanted by these performances every year. The festival, at the time known as the ‚Bregenzer festive week’, first started in 1946. Since then, the Vienna symphonic orchestra come to Bregenz every summer to perform at the Bregenzer Festspiele. The ‚ZDF heute journal’, a prominent German broadcaster, delighted by the spectacle on show, had this to say of the Bregenzer Festspiele: „For a couple of weeks during the summer months Bregenz becomes just a little bit like Holly-wood“. This evaluation is quite fitting, since Bregenz has in the past played host to and featured in James Bond’s ‚A Quantum of Solace’, in which 007 chases the world’s meanest villains across the floating stage and the opera building.

1 Bregenz Harbour | Seestraße 4 The harbor is the home port of the Vorarlberg Lines, who provide day tours to the most significant spots around the lake. For many visitors, the harbour is the gate to the city of Bregenz; a place where they can instantly enjoy a variety of culinary options. From the harbour it is only a short walk into the city centre and to the ‘Pfänderbahn’, the recognizable cable car up to the mountain. The harbour itself also offers special sights, such as ‘Die Welle’ (The Wave) and the ‘Sonnenkönigin’, an exclusive ship for special occasions.

2 Milk Mushroom (Milchpilz) | Seestraße 1 This small, yet iconic kiosk has been a feature of the Bregenz harbour scene since 1953. For most locals, a Bregenz without the listed kiosk is a scenario barely worth contemplating. Locals just love to order one of the different varieties of milk shakes and sandwiches on offer and then go down to the lake to enjoy the view from the Sunset Steps.

3 The Sunset Steps | MoloThese steps that lead into the lake are ideal for watching the sun slowly sink below the horizon. During the day, visitors can dangle their feet into the shallow waters and simultaneously enjoy the spectacular view of the floating stage, as well as the other towns and villages on the opposite side of the lake.

4 The Fischersteg Originally designed for fishing, this short wooden pier, that dates back to 1902, became the embarkation point for waterplanes twenty years later. In the summer months it is converted into a bar to become the perfect spot for refreshments.

SWIMMING AT THE LAKE

The Wiking | Strandweg 40This is a very popular spot, especially among young people, as it consists of a large grass area behind the Bregenz rowing club ideal for playing football, frisbee and other games. A short distance from the Wiking on the other side of the sports harbour are a set of stone slabs, that offer more tranquility, away from the bustling ball game noises.

Neu Amerika / New America | Neu AmerikaThis two-kilometre long stretch along the lake to the Wocherhafen is a scenic area where nature reserves and bathing spots lie in close proximity to one another. Specially designated areas are provided for barbequing. The name, which translates to New America, apparently derives from the popularity this spot received from American visitors, as the spot supposedly reminded them of home.

The military bathhouse (ˇMiliˇ)

The Public Swimming pool (Strandbad) | Strandweg 1For many families this is their first choice along the lake. The public pool of-fers extensive grass areas for young and old to relax, but also paddling pools, kids pools, slides, sport and multifunctional pools, as well as 400 meters of shore area along the lake. For visitors less keen on water sports, the public pool also has a playground, a climbing wall, a beach volleyball field and table tennis tables, as well as a beach-soccer field and plenty of grass to play games on. A day at the pool therefore offers a variety of fun and games in and out of the water.

The indoor pool Vitalium | Strandweg 1When the bathing season ends, swimmers can continue their hobby right next door. Included in the pool is a special kids area, a play pool and a sports area with cordoned off lanes for fast swimmers. One floor above the pool is the Vitalium with its Finnish saunas, steam and aroma baths, as well as whirlpools. But best of all: lake-view.

The military bathhouse (ˇMiliˇ) | ReichsstraßeˇMiliˇ is one of the most relaxing experiences Bregenz can offer. This wooden structure built on stilts above the lake is the oldest public bath along the lake (built in 1825). It originally functioned as a training facility for military cadets.

The Pipeline | ReichsstraßeUp until 1997, an oil pipeline ran underground along this beautiful stretch of shore line. Today, this lake side promenade is optimal for relaxing, sun bathing, swimming and barbequing. For the most part, the beach consists of cobbled stones, but there are also plenty of grass areas around the new wooden pear.

3130

BEING ACTIVE ALONG THE LAKE

BikingWhether at a leisurely pace or for sport, the well-developed bike lanes around the lake offer a range of possibilities. One of the most popular routes starts in Bregenz and continues on towards the German cities of Lindau and Friedrichshafen. This 36-kilometer stretch takes about 2,5 hours to com-plete. And if you are too tired to make the way back, a good tip is to take the boat provided by the Vorarlberg Lines, which takes you right back to your starting point in Bregenz.

JoggingBoth joggers and Nordic walkers love doing their rounds along the banks of the lake where they can enjoy spectacular views along well-trodden pa-thways. And if the run becomes too exhausting in the summer heat, a quick jump into the lake can offer refreshment, as well as recharge your batteries for the way back. One of the many popular routes starts at the public pool, past the stage towards the Mili and further out to the public pool in Lochau, always following the shoreline (approx. 7 kilometers).

Boat ridesAn especially gorgeous view of the bay area and the mountains in the back-ground can be gleaned by taking a peddle or electric boat out into the lake. These small boats offer room for four to six people and guarantee fun for the entire family. Cindy Feuerstein leases boats in all shapes and sizes from her stall in the Gondelhafen between the Fischersteg and the Opera House.

FishingBregenz has a multitude of prime fishing locations on offer, both along the shores of the lake and at the Bregenzerach. Maps that show where optimal fishing is permitted can be collected at the Bregenz tourist office in the Rat-hausstraße 35a.

Stand-up-PaddlingThis sport entails standing upright on a specially designed surfboard and propelling oneself through the water by means of a paddle. Stand-up-Padd-ling, or SUP for short, is very easy to learn and offers both relaxation and activity at the same time, depending on the pace. Whoever wants to try it out for themselves can rent equipment in the public pool and even attend a course to learn the basics of SUP.

SailingFor sailors, the Sporthafen (sports harbour), which is located about 500 meters away from the public pool, is the right place to go. The harbour has around 30 spots where guests from other harbours can anchor their boats to enjoy a day in Bregenz.

Path – or hiking trail (leisurely walk)

Mountain hike (sturdy footgear advised)

HOME MOUNTAIN: PFÄNDER (1.064 m) GEBHARDSBERG (596 m)

Cheese-Lecture Route (3 – 4:30 h)A relaxing hike with no significant inclines. On the way, a series of exhibition plates tell the story of how cheese is manufactured. Many opportunities for refreshments and cheese tasting in dairies exist along the trail. Take the gondola up the mountain– start at the station – Moosegg – Für-berg – Trögen – Hochberg – Schlüssellehen – Lutzenreute – Eichenberg – Pfänder

Rock-climbing up to the Känzele (0:45 h)This climbing route was officially opened in 2016. It is especially attractive to climbers, because it is easily accessible, offers panoramic views of the Rhine Valley and its cliffside is directed towards the South, which means the climb receives a lot of sun long into the evening. The starting point for absei-ling can be reached in about 10 minutes from the Gebhardsberg parking lot. (Degree of difficulty B/C/D)

The mountain that looms over the city and that Bregenz is proud to claim as its own, the Pfänder, is well worth the hike: marvelous views across the lake on the one side and over 200 mountain peaks on the other can be viewed from the top; a scenery that delights both young and old. The gondola carries up to 80 visitors per carriage from the town center up to the top of the mountain between 08:00 and 19:00. The Pfänder is also a perfect spot to start a hike, so put on your hiking boots and explore the multitude of trails from the peak. A detailed map for hiking can be purchased at the tourist information. Here a couple of personal recommendations:

Medieval old town | Gebhardsberg | Fluh | Pfänder (1:45 h)One possible route up the Pfänder starts in the medieval old town. From the federal monuments office building (the ‚Bundesdenkmalamt’) take the road towards the Gebhardsberg and from there follow signs for the ‚Fluh’ (743 m). Via the Walserstadel, the Kälbelen and the Pfänderdohle (all signpos-ted), the peak of the Pfänder can be reached in 1:30 h. Another possibility is taking the bus number 12c and get off at the ‚Fluh’ (bus stop ‚Pfänderweg’ or at the ‚Gasthaus Adler’) and walk up the Pfänder from there. The Gebhards-berg and the ‚Fluh’ are not just convenient stopovers on the way up the Pfänder, they are well worth a visit in their own right.

Via the Gschliefweg up the Pfänder (1:30 h)The classic route – short, but challenging as it ascends 600 meters in a rela-tively short time. Start at the Pfänderbahn – Weißenreute – Hintermoos / Mittelstation – Pfänderdohle – Pfänder Känzele Umrundung (2 h)This leisurely stroll along the mountain cliff under birch trees offers breath-taking views across the Rhine Valley towards the Swiss Alps. The start and point of return is at the parking lot on top of the Gebhardsberg.Oberer Känzeleweg – Unterer Känzeleweg – Gebhardsberg

Events und FestivalsThere is a lot to celebrate in the provincial capital. One of the newest and most exciting events is the annual BREGENZ LIFE festival in the spring, which offers party goers three days of concerts under the night sky, comple-tely free of charge! Other opportunities for live music are provided during March, June and October as part of the ˇLange Nacht der Musik’ (ˇThe Long Night of Musicˇ). On one summer day in June, the entire centre of Bregenz is transformed into a big playground for children during the ˇStadt der Kinderˇ (ˇCity of Childrenˇ), as well as the ˇharbour festivalˇ in August. The year ends full of verve and zest: the first Christmas markets open in mid-November on the Leutbühel to start a protracted time of celebration into the New Year.

MarketsThe locals have a particular taste for buying fresh, regional products direct-ly from the producer, for example on Tuesdays and Fridays on the Korn-marktplatz. On Saturdays, the Leutbühel becomes the venue of the weekly market. Between May and October, the market is also held on Wednesdays, in addition to the regular Saturday market. Every Friday there is also a far-mers’ market that provides seasonal produce along the Kaiserstraße. During spring and autumn, Italian producers and manufacturers bring their merchandise - from Prosciutto to Pecorino, from Salami milanese to flat bread - to the Italian Specialities and Delicatessen Market.

Insidertipp: During the summer months many villages and towns in Vorarlberg sell their local produce on selected Saturdays on ̌ Züg und Sacha ̌(ˇBits and Bobsˇ) markets.

Local animals, such as ibexes, deer, mountain goats, sheep and wild boar can all be visited in the in the local wildlife park. The park also offers a quiz to test how much kids have learnt in the park, with potential winnings for those clever enough to know all the answers. Small presents can be collected on the way out at the cashier.

MuseumsThe Vorarlberg Museum and the art gallery offer creative workshops for kids every Saturday. In addition, special family tours can be booked.
