kensington librarysan diego, california fall 20101 long section of proposed kensington library

located in an afluent neighborhood in san diego, california, the neighborhood of kensington, has a small town atmosphere largely supported by its neighborhood park, and small library. this project attempted to connect the library with local business that need auxilary space. the addition of indoor / outdoor ‘frames’ act as yoga space during the morning, spill over community space in the evening, and public art / performance space on the weekend. the high density of children that activate the library became an important design consideration- ultimately manifesting itself as the central interior focal point within the walls of the library.

c street revitilizaton san diego, california winter 2011

c street revitilizationthe revitilization of the c street corridor. the ‘light block’ emerges as the entertainment/arts area of the street; with graffiti ‘free walls’an adaptive reuse of the exisiting Ross Building into a graffiti arts gallery, and a statement boasting lighting canopy that encapsulates the block.

the product is an environment thatcaters to the ‘gritty’ urban dweller-one that likes art, likes food & drink, and loves the vibrant, sometimes eccelctic nature of a city.

the urban arena has the ability to create, and destroy. in the case of petco park in the late nineties, the stadium (and more importantly) it’s parking requirements replaced 13 san diego city blocks. not only did the stadium take the place of numerous businesses and landmarks, but is also created a spacial barrier between the east village, and neighbor-ing barrio logan- furthermore isolating the already culturally segregated barrio. the open parking field, currently eight city blocks sits vacant for roughly 85% of the year creating a wasteland of asphalt, and cement. the aim of this study was to re-establish the former connections of urban density, and set a framework for its future densification and connections. the project was initially approached from a historical prospective (1) studying the area’s evolution as prospective develop-ment and infrastructure dissolved the form and pattern of the neighborhood. the overriding design scheme arose from the need to establish a connection of the two downtown neighborhoods. a smart phasing strategy (2), and resulting moire pattern was used as a method of control-ing density, and diversity in the propos-als application.

my summer in denmark was spent studying at the danish institute for study abroad, and the royal danish academy in copenhagen. during my time there I took an architectural intensive tour of sweden, finland, denmark, and norway learning techniques of scandanavian materiality, building practices, and overall aesthetic. I learned a great deal working under the direct supervision of danish architectects, and visiting leading cutting edge firms such as big, and jds. the summer design studio culminated in the manifestation of a kayak rental center to be used in the christianshavn harbor in copenhagen.

this project saw the design, and development of a nine-unit residential housing project in san diego, ca. it soundly justifies the idea of “architect as devel-oper”; can one create meaningful & significant architecture taht is financially viable, and profitable for the developer? yes. the project had a unit mix of nine living containers ranging from 550 square feet, to 1500. total development cost was $2.6 million, and achieved a 45% loan to value, and 22% gross profit theshold.1 3d axon floor plans showing unit mix2 west elevation rendering3 axonometric section analysis

my thesis work at the newschool of architecture & design was deeply rooted in the emergence of co-working spaces, and social living. the idea that social networks, and the future urban ecology are a species that thrive in environ-ments that cater to their creative, and social needs- this project aims to create a place that houses both.1 prospective analysis of san diego’s working environments2 analysis of the current building at 1747 Hancock St.

after helping to create the plan, and vision of the first “catalytic” project of the IDEA district, I was hired by Gensler to come up with the initial schematic design of the program, and core/shell. using the concepts of what the neighborhood was conceived upon, I used cutting edge technology, and progressive design techniques to create a new, exciting sense of place.
