Classroom PoliciesPlease invest in a water bottle so that you do not have to leave the classroom to get water. Please use the restroom between classes so that you do not have to miss instruction.Please turn in all work on time. AssessmentStudents are assessed on oral language, reading, and writing skills. I use informal and formal methods of assessment including daily classwork, homework, projects, papers, and quizzes/tests. In addition to written quizzes and tests, oral assessments are often used in class. Socratic seminars and presentations will take
place throughout the year. Written assignments often include checklists or rubrics that will be used to assign grades. Most writing assignments are assessed using the Six Traits of Writing rubric.
www.turnitin.comThis is a website we will use to turn in most written work. The students will sign up for a school-related account and be able to turn their work in digitally. This site can also be used to peer edit, to post on class discussion boards, and to check for plagiarism.
Grading SystemGraded work is entered into the Engrade system, so students may check their grades throughout each term. All work is weighted equally. Assessment points are not worth more than assignment points.
InternationalismNovels and short stories studied in class reflect cultures, people, and values from around the world. Persuasive writing and speeches relate to the world, specifically on ways to improve the world around us. In addition to improving English skills this year, students learn skills and strategies that will build their independence and work ethic in order to help them succeed in the future.
Character EducationCharacter education is infused into the discussion of content and the interactions within the classroom. Encouraging positive character traits is an integral part of the classroom climate and procedures. Every month, middle school students study one key word that is part of our character education program. A large amount of the stories read in class reflect the themes of our character education program. While reading about key topics, such as courage, students reflect upon and discuss important life skills.
Integrated UnitThe study of Ancient Greece is explored through Greek Mythology during English class. Students are exposed to numerous Greek Myths by reading and listening to them in addition to acting them out and watching performances. Students will also create their own fictional pourquoi storybook to explain a creation. We discuss how the Ancient Greeks used myths to explain the world around them. Constellation Myths are present in many of the stories that we read.
Field TripThe study of Ancient Greece provides numerous activities and projects. Personal narrative writing is developed through journal writing. Several projects include descriptive writing, expository writing, and historical fiction writing. Students create and perform skits set in the past. Students complete an oral presentation similar to the tour guides’ informative speeches.
