Principal’s Report
Congratulations to all our children and their parents, school uni-forms look great. I make no apologies for insisting that all children wear blue school hats throughout this term and during next year as they are the most affordable sun safe hats available. We will continue to encourage all children to wear wide brimmed hats so that all areas around the face are protected. Caps do not offer sufficient protection to the face and little to no protection to ears and neck. If you have difficulty purchasing a school hat please let me know and we can come to some arrangement. Remember that children not wearing school hats will not be able to play at recess and lunch, in keeping with the sun safe policy. Sun screen is also necessary for all children and should be applied before they come to school.
Swimming School
Swimming school began on Monday 26/10/2015 and will continue for two weeks. The weather has been variable and I know that the children are enjoying acquiring vital water safety skills. Again hats and sun-screen is a must for the walk to and from the pool. Students are in full sun for most of the way.
Selective HS Test 2016
All current Year 5 children who wish to sit for the selective HS exam early next year (10/3/2016) will need to complete an online application by the 16th of November 2015. Please make sure you meet the deadline as late applications are not accepted. Par-ents must apply online at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/

Captains 2016
Year 5 children will begin participating in a leadership program in preparation for the upcoming 2016 Captains and Vice-Captains Elections later this term. During the leadership program Year 5 students will be able to nominate/ be nominated for the first round candidates. They will then as a group, vote for the final 6 students. These 6 students can then begin to campaign and pre-pare their speeches that will be delivered before parents and the whole school on Thursday 26/11/2015. K to Y5 will then vote for the boy and girl Captain while the other 4 students will become Vice-Captains. This process enables all Y5 students to identify leadership skill and attributes, that they each possess and gives them confidence and ownership of the process of electing cap-tains.
Enrolments for 2016
To enable us to correctly estimate enrolments and staff the school appropriately for 2016, I need all parents enrolling chil-dren K-6 to complete enrolment forms and leave their details at the office ASAP. Please let me know of any neighbours and friends, who may not have children already at this school but will have school age children for 2016, we can then contact them and include them on our numbers for next year. Thank you to all the parents who are promoting our school in such a positive way and encouraging all local families to enrol in their local school.

SRC Disco!
Well done and thank you to everyone who came along to our disco last week. It was a great evening with
lots of dancing and a fantastic range of super spooky costumes. For more photos, visit our school web-
site.
Chill Zone
Yesterday was the official opening of the Chill Zone, a pas-
sive play area in the weather shed. This project, created by
Joseph from the OC was developed to offer a relaxing
space for senior students during break times. A big thank
you to local artist Leslie Duffin for her time and effort with
the wall mural designs. Thank you to the local businesses
who supported this project with donations - Paint Inspira-
tions, Bunnings and Masters. Thanks also to our P&C for
their generous financial support and to all the students who
helped with painting. All this wouldn't have been possible
without the great work, organisation and time on weekends
from Joseph, Max, Fiona Pringle and Mel Cox. Well done -
it looks terrific!

Bandfest 2015
On Tuesday the 13th of October the Tighes Hill Public School concert band attended the 2015 Bandfest
competition at the Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre.
Bandfest is an annual competition where every year bands and ensembles from around the Hunter come
together for a week of competition against each other.
When you enter a band in Bandfest you enter yourself in a category depending on the band’s skill level,
then you are given a day where you compete against bands that are also entered in the same level as
you, we entered in the Preliminary B section.
After every band has performed they add up all the scores and hand out the awards. Each band is either
given a commended award or a highly commended. In no particular order, then the band that preformed
the best that day wins. Unfortunately we didn’t win this year but it was very close. After talking to the
judge we found out that we had lost to the winning band (Elermore Vale) by only 1 point! We also got
some tips on how to improve so that next year we can maybe enter ourselves in the next category above.
The other award that was given was an award for an outstanding musician. But in our category two were
given out, one to the percussion section of the Newcastle East band, and one was given to an Alto Saxo-
phone player.
We preformed 4 of our strongest pieces on the day: Bunyip Blues, Some Nights, Magpie Warrior and We
Will Rock You. These were some of the best and most fun pieces we have and it was super fun to play
them for a live audience! Bandfest was a really fun experience and Tighes Hill is really looking forward to
competing again next year!
