A MESSAGE FROM
PASTOR SANDY KESSINGER
Advent and Christmas Season
We associate December with Christmas but for the church we first celebrate the Advent season and then we
transition into the Christmas season. And this Advent there will be many opportunities for us to prepare for
the birth of Christ. As I outline each of them for you, please consider attending some (if not all) of the events
as they will all be thought-provoking and engaging.
1. Four Sundays in Advent – Each week we light a candle on the Advent Wreath until all four candles are lit
to represent the growing light that shines through the darkness. I invite individuals and/or families to light
the candles each week (at each service). You will also share an introductory reading and a prayer. I will
send you the reading and prayer ahead of time so that you can come well prepared.
If you would like to volunteer for the lighting of the Advent Wreath please contact me directly at
[email protected]. Currently we have these dates and times open:
December 10 – 9:45 am, 11:00 am
December 17 – 8:30 am
December 24 (Advent 4) - 10:00 am
2. Tuesday Chapel Services – We are offering a new worship experience this Advent season. All are welcome
to a light lunch (soup and salad and dessert) that will be served in the Crossroads at 11:15 am. We will
then move into the sanctuary at 12:00 pm for a 30-minute service that includes meditative songs, reflec-
tions on the themes of peace, joy, and love. Holy Communion will be offered.. Over the three-week period
the reflections will be given by Diane Miller, Marlon Yearwood, and Max Miller.
3. Blue Christmas – Last year we introduced Blue Christmas to Redeemer. It is a service meant to bring hope
and solace to those who find the holidays to be difficult for any variety of reasons. We discovered last year
that the service is not restricted to those who have suffered losses but is also a meaningful way to prayer-
fully end the day. It is a powerful service and we encourage you to invite family, friends, and neighbors to
attend with you. The date is Wednesday, December 6, and it will begin with dinner at 6:30 pm. The ser-
vice begins at 7:30 pm and includes Holy Communion.
4. Living Nativity – Mark your calendars for Friday, December 15! Live animals will be right outside our
front entrance to the Crossroads, and Mary and Joseph will greet you by the manger. Inside we will serve
hot chocolate. The baked goods will be for sale to help support our trip to the ELCA Youth Gathering.
The evening is made complete by the voices of our choirs as we offer a Christmas Concert (in our sanctu-
ary) that starts at 7:30 pm. For those of you who love to sing the Christmas carols before December 24 –
this is your opportunity.
5. Advent 4 – Since Christmas Eve is on a Sunday this year it causes us a small dilemma. If we go straight
into our Christmas Eve services (later in the day) we miss the opportunity to worship on the Fourth Sunday
in Advent. As a result we will hold one service in the morning at 10 am. The service and the readings will
center on the last week of Advent.
Christmas Eve Services will take place at 4 pm (the children reenact the Christmas story during the time of
the sermon), 6 pm, 8 pm, and 10 pm. Please come with your family and friends on this very special and
holy night.
6. Christmas Day – To date, we are the only congregation in the area that offers a Christmas Day service so it
has become an important witness to the community. At 10 am we gather in the sanctuary for a traditional
service that includes our favorite Christmas hymns.
7. The Second Sunday in Christmas – December 31 is also New Year’s Eve. Again, so far we are the only
congregation in the area that offers a service on New Year’s Eve but this year (since it is on a Sunday) we
will offer one service in the morning at 10 am. It will be a service of Lessons and Carols as we continue to
celebrate the 12 days of Christmas.
Advent first and then Christmas – both are times for us to reflect on this incredible God who sent his only be-
gotten Son into the world to save and redeem us. Each year I encourage us to stay in the season and not rush
too far ahead so that we do not miss the joy of the present moment.
Yours in Christ – Pastor Sandy Kessinger

Committee Liaison Reports
Social Concerns
Thanksgiving Refugee Celebration will be held on 11/19. Refugee families supported by Lutheran Social Services have
been invited. A new format is planned to allow for more congregational members and refugee families to attend. The
event is being coordinated by Carol Perry and Joan Durman.
Congregation was very generous in the collection of winter coats, scarves and mittens for refugee families. Thank you
to Tracy Graves for her coordination and distribution efforts.
Committee will move forward with LSS’s Good Neighbor program in 2018 (a 6-month commitment to sponsor a new
refugee family arriving in the US). Interested volunteers/participants should contact Stephanie Hunter (or the Church
office)
2018-2019 Budget planning
The Social Concerns committee has put forth their 2018 budget request at the same level as the 2017 budget. The budg-
et includes support for the LSS Good Neighbor program along with contributions to over 20 local and international ser-
vice organizations.
Council discussed that the Social Concerns budget has not increased over the last 5 years and we have had to decrease
our contributions to some organizations accordingly to support new programs/activities. An increase will be planned
for the 2019 budget cycle.
Joan Durman and Deanna Heier will work together as Co-Chairs of the Social Concerns committee in 2018
Closing
Council’s next meeting date is December 11, 2017. The next Executive Committee meeting will be held December 6, 2017.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:35 p.m. with the Lord’s Prayer.
Preparing for Christ
Deacon Erin Swenson-Reinhold Advent. Four weeks to ready ourselves for the birth of Christ. For many of us, the busyness of the season can make it difficult to
enjoy the blessings that come from preparing for Christ’s birth.
In the Lutheran tradition, we set apart four weeks to ready our hearts and lives for the transformative event of Christ’s birth. What
would it be like to set aside 10 minutes/day to prepare our hearts for Christ? Here are some things you can do at home:
1. Use an online resource such as www.d365.org or sacredspace.ie
2. Spend time in prayer and reading scripture
3. Light advent candles with their emphasis on Joy, Hope, Peace, Love and include a prayer and blessing of one another
4. Incorporate an Advent calendar into your daily routine
5. Consider participating in acts of service during Advent
Over the next four weeks, we will have several opportunities to intentionally engage this sacred season at Redeemer.
1. Four weeks of worship that focus on Advent starting on December 3rd
2. Mid-week Advent services on Tuesdays (Dec. 5, 12, 19) at noon
3. Advent calendars will be distributed to the Sunday Morning Faith Formation families. Contact Deacon Erin if you wish to re-
ceive one
4. Blue Christmas – December 6th
5. Live Nativity and Christmas Concert – December 15th
6. Celebration of Week 4 of Advent – 10 a.m. on December 24th
7. Christmas Eve Services – 4, 6, 8, 10 pm
8. Christmas Day Service – 10 a.m.
A Message from Marlon
I would like to share with you this very meaningful thanksgiving devotion that I came across:
Some of us find it hard to say “thank you.” In Vermont a farmer was sitting on the porch with his wife. He was beginning to
realize how much she meant to him. It was about time—for they’d lived together forty-two years, and she had been such a help.
She had shared the joys and the hardships of their marriage. She had worked hard and loved him unconditionally. One day as
they sat together, he said, “Wife, you’ve been such a wonderful woman that there are times I can hardly keep from telling you.”
One of our problems is that we are blessed in so many ways that we can begin to take them for granted. We can become so ac-
customed to our blessings that we can lose our sense of gratitude.
For those of us who think thanksgiving is optional, this gospel story shows how very important it is to take time to give thanks:
“As Jesus continued on toward Jerusalem, he reached the border between Galilee and Samaria. As he entered a village there, ten
lepers stood at a distance, crying out, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’ He looked at them and said, ‘Go show yourselves to
the priests.’ And as they went, their leprosy disappeared. One of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back to Jesus,
shouting, ‘Praise God, I’m healed!’ He fell face down on the ground at Jesus’ feet, thanking him for what he had done. This
man was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, ‘Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine? Does only this foreigner return to give
glory to God?’ And Jesus said to the man, ‘Stand up and go. Your faith has made you well’ ” (Luke 17:11-19, NLT).
Luke taught us, with this story, that we can be thankful for Jesus’ compassion. These men were outcasts. Their society treated
them as if they were already dead. They “stood at a distance” because the law prohibited them from coming in close contact
with people. The entire population was afraid of being infected by them. These ten leprous men didn’t know a lot of theology.
But they did know that Jesus is a Savior. The angel was specific about Jesus’ name when He was born: “She will give birth to a
son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).
The very name “Jesus” means Yahweh saves.
They also knew that Jesus is in charge. They call Him “Master,” which means “One who stands over.” They sensed His authori-
ty. They were laying hold of the One who could save them because they believed He is in charge and has unconditional love for
those who are struggling with leprosy. Their confidence in Jesus was justified. “And as they went, their leprosy disappeared.”
The story doesn’t end, however, with the healing of the ten lepers. Luke continued his description of the miracle by pointing out
that only one of the ten came back to Jesus to say “Thank You.” Coming back is not popular. The majority (ninety percent of
the lepers) kept going.
When we are thankful for the many blessings we have received we become candidates for the greatest blessing anyone can ob-
tain. Forgiveness of sin and eternal salvation are God’s gifts to those who are willing to fall at Jesus' feet and say, “Thank You.”
We have been blessed. A right attitude about what we have already received can produce unimaginable benefits in the future.
Let’s come back to Jesus’ feet this day and say “Thank You.” It will be worth the time it takes.
Year End Financial Picture As in the past, Redeemer receives a significant portion of income from financial gifts at the end of the year. This year
our need is no different. Below is a brief summary of our position:
$ 94,424 Current shortfall of revenue to actual expenses (as of 11/30/17)
$ 98,500 Expected additional expenses in December
$192,924 Total needed in December to breakeven for the year
We are grateful for the contributions made to date and for your generosity. Although the totals can seem daunting, we
have been very blessed at Redeemer to have a ministry that continues to thrive. As in previous years, we hope to cover
our expenses and to have a little more to start off with in the new year. We ask that you pray and consider how you and
your family can be part of this example of faith, love and support for God's work at Redeemer.
Tax Advantaged Giving
As we approach the end of the year, we want to make sure that you are aware of the tax advantage of giving appreciated
stocks or mutual fund shares directly to Redeemer. It really is a win-win opportunity for you and the church. This meth-
od of giving allows you to minimize capital gains taxes and yet provide the full current value and financial benefits to
the programs and ministries that you care about at Redeemer. What a great way to share a portion of the many blessings
in your life!
If you have stocks or mutual funds that have appreciated significantly, rather than selling those assets and potentially
incurring a large capital gain tax bill, those investments can be simply gifted to the church. It is an easy way to help the
church meet our expense obligations for the year.
Veronique Thomas, Redeemer’s Financial Coordinator, can help answer questions for you about this transfer process at
703/356-3346 or at [email protected]. Also, you can visit Redeemer’s website and at the top of the page
there is a tab labeled “About Us” and a following tab for “Give Online”. In the subsequent description, there are stock
and mutual fund donation instructions and forms available. Thank you!

2017 GIFTS OF HOPE: Celebrating 25 Years!
Gifts of Hope is an organization, sponsored by our local Metropolitan Washington,
D.C., ELCA synod, which raises money for area non-profits. The funds you donate
help the homeless, the hungry, the job seeker, the young, the elderly, immigrants,
refugees, seminary and college students, and those seeking to improve their lives. In
the last 25 years GOH has raised and disbursed more than $3,337,000 to help our
beneficiaries.
Gifts of Hope is a family of volunteers, congregations, donors, the Synod, and Beneficiary Organizations. We
thank you for your support and prayers during our first 25 years and hope that your support continues this year
and for the next 25 years.
“25 for 25” This year we encourage you to increase your support to GOH by 25% or $25 during our 25th year.
Gifts of Hope annually raises and disburses an average of $100,000.00. Imagine all the work we can do to-
gether when we increase our support to $125,000!
Redeemer will host GOH sales events during the Advent season. The gifts you can purchase are an alternative
to traditional gift-giving. You can choose from a variety of gifts at a variety of prices. You will receive a holi-
day card, including a description of the designated gift you choose, which you can give to your gift recipients.
100% of your monetary gift will go to the beneficiary organization. Look for the Gifts of Hope sales table each

Thanksgiving Celebration with Refugee Families. In a true example of Christian hospitality, Redeemer
once again welcomed refugee families who, with the assistance of LSS, have recently settled in Northern Vir-
ginia. The Social Concerns Ministry with the help of Redeemer adults and youth hosted seven families on
November 19. Highlights of our afternoon include good food; crafts for young ones; soccer for youth; family
photographs; gloves, scarves, hats and small gifts for children and youth; and enthusiastic conversations. Our
refugee families, many of whom helped American troops in Afghanistan, talked to us about their hopes for a
better life in our country and their gratitude for Redeemer’s hospitality.
Winter Coat Drive for Lutheran Social Services (LSS). The Social Concerns Ministry wants to thank the
congregation for their support of the LSS winter coat drive. Your generosity was overwhelming!! Once
more we exceeded our goal by delivering 110 coats and 161 hats, scarves, mittens and gloves to LSS’s offic-
