TIDBITS® LOOKS AT

SKIN AND BONESby Kathy Wolfe

“Why, you’re just skin and bones!” you may have heard it said. While the human body is lots more than skin and bones, these two things account for a very large part. Follow along as Tidbits explores what holds us together.

• “I’ve got you under my skin,” goes the old song. The skin is the largest of all the organs in the body, and makes up about 15% of the body’s weight. On the average adult body, it weighs about 6 lbs. (2.72 kg), with an area of about 20 square feet (1.86 sq. m). The average individual has about 300 million skin cells. This is an easy and delicious way to use some of your leftover Thanksgiving turkey. You may want to freeze several 2-cup packages of turkey so you’ll have the main ingredient at hand. After one bite, we think you’ll want to make this often and will be glad you have some turkey stashed away in the freezer!

1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reduced-fat chicken soup2/3 cup nonfat dry milk powder1 cup water1 tablespoon dried onion flakes1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes2 cups diced cooked turkey breast1 (4-ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained

1. In an 8-cup microwaveable glass mixing bowl, combine chicken soup, milk powder, water, onion flakes and parsley flakes. Stir in turkey and mush-rooms. Microwave on High (100 percent power) for 5 to 6 minutes or until mixture is very hot, stirring every 2 minutes.2. Serve over toast, mashed potatoes, baked po-tatoes, pasta or rice. Makes 4 (3/4 cup) servings. Freezes well.

SKIN AND BONES (continued):• When a person is born, skin is about 1 millimeter

thick and will grow to about 3 millimeters by adulthood.

• The body’s three million sweat glands will produce about two quarts (1.9 liters) of fluid on a warm summer day. When sweat evaporates off the skin, body heat is reduced. Sweat glands are the most concentrated on the bottom of the feet, with the least concentration on the body’s back. The smell of sweat is affected by a person’s mood, diet, hormones, medical condition, or drugs.

• Our skin is thinnest on our eyelids, just 0.02 m thick.

• Why does our skin bruise? It’s caused by blood capillaries that burst near the skin’s surface. The blood cells quickly die and change color, creating the purplish bruise. The bruise fades as those cells are carried off by the body.

• And why does our skin tan when we’re out in the sun? It’s the result of our skin secreting melanin, a brown pigment that helps block out harmful ultraviolet rays. Thousands of years ago, when dark-skinned humans migrated to colder climates, much of their melanin pigment was lost and white skin began to appear.

• There are two types of melanin – pheomelanin, which varies from yellow to red in color, and eumelanin, which is dark brown to black. Pheomelanin is responsible for our pink lips and for red hair color. Eumelanin contributes to brown and black skin and hair. A person with a complete or partial absence of melanin is known as an albino.

• Skin that is glabrous has no hair.

1. In which book’s 5:18 (KJV) does it state, “In every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God”? 1 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 1 Peter, 1 John2. What items of food and drink did Jesus give thanks for at the Last Supper? Figs/wa-ter, Bread/wine, Fishes/nectar, Honey/milk

3. Which book (KJV) mentions the word “thanksgiving” the most times at eight? Gen-esis, Nehemiah, Psalms, Isaiah4. From Leviticus 22, a sacrifice of thanks-giving is most meaningful when it is “what”? Sincere, Often, Voluntary, Extravagant5. Where was Jonah when he prayed with the voice of thanksgiving? Fish’s belly, Aboard ship, In the wilderness, Mountaintop6. Whose thanksgiving is expressed in Phi-lippians 4:10-20? Paul, John the Baptist, James, David

I’d like to meet the young child who discovered that slathering a rainbow of colorful poster paints on the underside of the hand and pressing it on paper creates a turkey print -- that iconic imprint that every preschooler in America would delight in making for decades of November’s to come.If your kids are now older but are still interested in doing “Turkey Day” crafts, let them create adorable handprint-inspired turkeys with inexpensive stretch knit gloves. (Or, use stray gloves that have lost their mate.) Decorate the stuffed turkeys with flair to give them distinct personalities, and they’ll soon be doing a turkey trot up and down your Thanksgiving dinner table to amuse your happy guests.

Here’s the stuff you’ll need:• Inexpensive stretch knit gloves in a solid color, or choose fashion knit stretch gloves with designs that will enhance the personality of your turkey (available at discount and dollar stores) • Polyester fill, or cut-up scraps of an old T-shirt • Sturdy cardboard cut into a circle 3 inches in diameter• Craft supplies such as feathers, googly eyes, ribbons and pipe cleaners • Low-temperature glue gun or household glue

Here’s the fun:1. Fill the stretch glove with the polyester fill or fabric scraps. 2. Tuck the cardboard disk into the cuff below the stuffing to create a base. Set the “turkey” upright on the base.3. Glue on eyes, feathers and other features. For extra detail, use felt for a beak, and pieces of pipe cleaner for a wattle. Use a thimble for a whimsical pilgrim hat, and a ribbon for a tie. 4. Display anywhere around your home, or set it on the Thanksgiving buffet or dinner table. If you have a kids’ table, set the turkey on a platter with fall leaves strewn around for a cute centerpiece. The turkey will stand extra tall if you remove the cardboard disk and cinch the cuff around the base of an upside-down goblet or wine glass. ***Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our dog “Jimbo” recently took to chasing his tail. He does it in the living room, and he does it when I take him outside. Often he’ll snap at the base of his tail. It stops for a few hours, and then he’s back at it. I’ve looked, and I can’t see any fleas or anything. What causes this? -- Dale in Charlotte, N.C.

DEAR DALE: There are several possibilities as to why Jimbo keeps chasing his tail. While it’s true that almost all dogs do this occasionally, frequent tail-chasing signals that something else is going on.The most common cause, as you were thinking, is itching or other irritation in a spot on a dog’s hindquarters that is hard for it to reach. A flea or tick infestation certainly can set if off, but since you didn’t find evidence of fleas (such as flea dust -- tiny black specks that are basically flea droppings -- deep in Jimbo’s

fur) or ticks, the mystery gets deeper.Another possibility is some kind of allergic reaction. He could be experiencing anxiety. Or, he could have an underlying health problem, such as an infection.Take Jimbo to the vet first to rule out any serious problems. If a cause isn’t found, the vet likely will recommend a medication -- either an antihistamine to calm allergic itching or an anti-anxiety medication, or both. If these help your dog, then you’re halfway to finding a cause.Observe Jimbo more closely. Where does he hang out during the day? Are there certain places where he likes to walk or romp outside? Does he begin exhibiting the behavior after the same event or the same feeding time? Look for patterns and behavior triggers, and you can begin working forward to calm his tail-chasing.

SKIN AND BONES (continued):• Acne, caused by an overproduction of oil

that plugs the pores, afflicts more than just teenagers. One in 20 adult women is bothered by acne. That figure is just one in 100 for adult men.

• The next time you’re doing the dusting, consider that 75% of household dust consists of dead skin cells. Every minute, you are shedding about 30,000 dead skin cells. By the time you’re 70, you will have shed about 40 lbs. (18.1 kg) of dead skin.

• Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, accounting for almost half of cancer diagnoses in the United States. There will be about 76,000 new cases of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, this year. Pale skin that sunburns easily is more susceptible to skin cancer. Severe sunburns in the past along with excessive unprotected exposure to sunlight or tanning booths are also contributing factors. Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer worldwide, and one in 50 Americans will develop it during their lifetime.

• About 45% of bone consists of mineral deposits, including calcium, phosphorus, and sodium, along with the protein collagen. Living tissue, cells, and blood vessels make up another 30%, with the remaining 25% water.

• Bones account for about 14% of the body’s total weight. A baby is born with about 300 bones, but as it grows, many fuse together, so that by adulthood the total is 206. When a baby is born, its kneecaps consist of soft cartilage which will gradually harden into bone, a process known as ossification.

Repairing Cracked Exterior Siding

Q: I noticed recently that something had hit the side of my house and left a crack in the vinyl siding. It looks like just one of the “boards” is damaged, and I don’t want water getting in-side the walls. Is there a quick way to fix it? -- Maryanne T., Denton, Texas

A: You can put a temporary patch over mini-mally damaged siding to protect it from the elements, using a matching or near-match-ing replacement panel purchased from your home-improvement store. It’s not an ideal fix, because the seam line will be somewhat obvious and the replacement panel will not match exactly due to the original siding hav-ing weathered. It also won’t hold for many months, so make plans to have the damaged siding replaced soon.Besides a replacement panel, you’ll need a box cutter, measuring tape, a power drill, a siding riveter and rivets. (In a pinch you can use a staple gun, hot glue, roof patching or nails, but be aware these are not standard siding fasten-ers.) Set up a sturdy work surface near the re-pair area to minimize time spent walking back to your workbench.Measure the damaged area, adding 4-6 inches on either side of the crack. Use this measure-ment to cut the replacement siding to the same width. Now, you can just slip the new patch into place over the damaged area. It will stand up slightly from the surrounding siding. To help it sit a little more flush and provide added pro-tection, trim away part of the top and bottom of the patch. Use the box cutter to trim away the topmost row of holes -- these are punch outs where an-chor nails typically go, but you won’t be us-ing them. Cut carefully, and then gently snap away the punch outs. Next, trim away about half of the bottom “lip” of the panel, leaving just a narrow lip to slip around the bottom of the siding it will cover. Again, use the box cutter careful-ly and be cautious when snapping away the trimmed portion. Here’s a video that explains how to do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ch30NCj1b0 Slip the patch into place, tucking the top por-tion under the siding panel above the damaged spot and pushing the bottom lip into place. Hold the patch in place by drilling a hole through the bottom “lip” of the patch and the bottom of the siding panel it’s covering, on ei-ther side of the patch about an inch or so in. Then, use the rivet gun to place a rivet in each hole.Again, this patch won’t hold for too long, so plan on replacing the entire panel as soon as possible.

Does Limiting Sugar Include Fruit?

DEAR DR. ROACH: Medical advice is to reduce sugar consumption. Does this apply to 100 percent fruit juices, fresh fruit, sweetened cereal products or other fruit-sweetened products? -- R.B.

ANSWER: I think it makes sense to limit sugar intake, as most North Americans take in remarkably large quantities of sugar. Recently, while giving a lecture at the medical school, I noticed that the carbonated sodas served contained 45 grams of added sugar per can. That’s more than the American

Heart Association recommends in a day (no more than 25 grams of added sugar per day for women, 40 grams a day for men)! Be careful of products that claim to be sweetened by fruit juice or fruit sugar; this still counts as added sugar.

I do make an exception for fruits, as the body processes natural sugars from fruit differently. You can try this out at home by eating four medium-size oranges or drinking its equivalent in an 8-ounce (250 ml) glass of orange juice. I think you will find a big difference in how full you feel.

Although reducing sugar is critical for diabetics and is very important for anyone trying to lose weight, even for people with no sugar or weight problems, the evidence is accumulating that eating too much added sugar increases future risk for heart disease and diabetes.

Diabetes has become epidemic in North America. The booklet on it provides insight on its diagnosis and treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 402W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks

for delivery.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife has wet AMD. Her ophthalmologist gave her some vitamins (to take three times a day). They include 25 mg of zinc oxide. She has read somewhere that women should not take more than 8 mg of zinc a day. These vitamins would total 75 mg daily. Are zinc and zinc oxide the same? Can she take these vitamins? -- J.N.

ANSWER: The usual dose of zinc for age-related macular degeneration is 80 mg daily of zinc oxide. Twenty-three percent of zinc oxide is elemental zinc, so this is about 18 mg of elemental zinc. The ophthalmologist is giving a very standard and safe dose for AMD.

The U.S. recommended daily allowance for zinc is 11 mg for men, 8 mg for women. Very high doses of zinc can be dangerous, but this dose is still in the safe zone.

SKIN AND BONES (continued):• The longest and strongest bone of the skeleton is

the femur, the thighbone, accounting for nearly 25% of a body’s height. The femur can support 30 times its own weight. The largest bone is the pelvis, and the smallest is located in the middle ear. The tiny stapes, commonly called the stirrup is only 0.11 inches (2.8 mm) long, about the size of a grain of rice. It’s the only bone that’s fully grown at birth.

• The parts of the body with most bones are the arms and hands with a total of 60. Legs and feet are next with 58, followed by the 26 vertebrae. Most people have 24 ribs and our skull contains 22 bones. One out of 20 individuals has an extra rib, usually males. You can expect your ribs to move about 5 million times over the course of the next year. They move every time we breathe!

• Bone tissue is constantly growing slowly. Over a seven-year period, every bone in the body is completely replaced.

• The only bone in the body that does not touch another bone is the hyoid bone. You can find this V-shaped bone above the larynx where it secures the muscles of the tongue.

• If the amount of calcium in the bloodstream is too low, the body pulls the calcium reserves from the bones, which will eventually cause the bones to thin (the condition known as osteoporosis), or break.

• The most common broken bones among adults are the arm and the ankle. However, in children, it’s the collarbone that’s most frequently broken.

• “A sound heart is the life of the flesh; but envy the rottenness of the bones” – Proverbs 14:30.

ROCKEFELLER CENTER TREEEvery year on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is lit between West 48th and West 51st Streets in midtown Manhattan in New York City. Here’s a glimpse into the history of this tradition. • Construction began on Rockefeller Center in May

of 1930, a cluster of 14 buildings in an Art Deco style. Its centerpiece is the 70-floor, 872-foot (266 m) GE Building located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, formerly known as the RCA Building, and nicknamed 30 Rock. Today the complex consists of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres.

• On Christmas Eve, 1931, in the midst of the Great Depression, a group of 30 construction workers dragged a 20-ft. (6.1-m) balsam fir tree through the muddy construction site and decorated it with strings of cranberries, paper garlands, and tin cans. In 1933, the year that 30 Rock opened, the tree became an official holiday tradition with the first lighting ceremony.

• An eight-ton bronze sculpture of the Greek Titan Prometheus bringing fire to mankind was installed in early 1934 and is a prominent feature in the plaza. On Christmas Day, 1936, the Center’s ice skating rink was opened. Its popularity has grown to the point that today over a quarter million people skate there every year.

• Usually a Norway spruce, the tree must have a minimum height of 65 feet (20 m). The height is limited to 110 feet (34 m) due to the width of Manhattan’s streets. The tallest Christmas tree at the Center was in 1999, a Norway spruce from Connecticut, 100 feet (30 m) tall. Since 1999, the tree has come from one of four states – New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania.

“Yes Please”By Amy Poehler(Harper Collins, $28.99)Reviewed by Molly Ford

Whether you know Amy Poehler from “Parks and Recreation,” “Saturday Night Live” or one of her movies, most of America has smiled at least once because of Poehler.

In her first book, Poehler weaves a story that is half-memoir, half-advice and all funny. Begin-ning with growing up in a small Massachusetts town, all the way through hosting awards shows, she builds on her own stories to tell how long, hard work lead to stardom. Poehler also gives the more serious topics covered in the book, like divorce, the weight they deserve without feeling

too heavy, while managing to weave in advice on topics as varied as body image, the Mommy Wars and managing your career.

The best chapter of the book, one that will stay with you long after you’re done reading, is about a skit Poehler performed on “SNL” where she inadvertently made fun of a disabled woman. The repercussions of the incident are fascinating. Sharing with the reader email exchanges and pri-vate conversations, she lets us in on Hollywood gossip and fascinating behind-the-scenes scoops. This chapter, entitled “Sorry, Sorry, Sorry,” would be amazing for a book club to discuss.

The stories veer into drugs, sex and other adult content on occasion, but overall the clear take-away of the book is: work hard and be nice.

If you want inspiration about how hard work can lead to success, with laughs and special ce-lebrity and comedy references thrown in, this is your read.

This might be the year that you decide to spend a little (or a lot) more on holiday gift giving. Maybe finances are looking a bit better after a long period of struggle. But before you break the bank, ask yourself a few ques-tions:Is your home paid for? Is your car paid for? Do you have adequate savings if you lose your job? Have you paid off all your credit cards and loans? If the answer to any of these is no, then this isn’t the

year to spend wildly on gifts.Create a budget before you spend a single dollar. But before you create that budget, decide what’s really important to you.For some, it’s a big holiday dinner with dozens of friends and relatives in attendance. If so, have everyone bring a dish, but count on providing the majority of the meal your-self. Make your lists and start shopping the weekly grocery ads. Stock up when items go on sale. While not everything can be bought in advance, many things can be: canned goods, frozen foods and packaged mixes. Don’t forget the extras that always come with entertaining: carpet cleaning services, new linens if you’ll have out-of-town guests, a quick coat of paint in the living room. Don’t get caught at the end with bigger expenses than you’d planned because you left something off the list.If you have young children, chances are the sparkle in their

eyes as they open gifts is most important to you. If they watch a lot of children’s TV shows, this is a good time to limit TV and keep them away from the ads. Look for timeless toys that require kid power, not batteries. Watch the ads for sales, and look for nearly new toys in charity shops. If you typically swap gifts with adult members of the family at a distance, make this the year you stop. Get an agreement to cut back and no longer send gifts for the adults -- they’ll probably be relieved. If you have a computer spreadsheet program, it will help keep your expenses realistic. Start with the cash you ac-tually have to spend without using credit cards and with-out putting your other financial obligations in jeopardy. Make columns for budget and actual costs, and update the figures as you go along.Make this a stress-free holiday season by not overspend-ing.

• As the holidays and the inevitable family gatherings approach, you might want to prepare yourself to engage in logomachy -- a battle fought with words.

• You may have been unaware of it for the past 11 months, but 2014 has been the International Year of Family Farming, so declared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

• Place-names sometimes enter the English language through roundabout means. Take Arkansas, for instance: That state’s name comes from the word akansa, which is a French pronunciation of an Algonquin name for the Native American Quapaw people. The original word means either “people of the south wind” or “downriver people.”

• You might be surprised to learn that the fax machine was invented in the 19th century. In 1843, a man named Alexander Bain patented Bain’s Telegraph, which was able to transmit an exact copy of lines, letters and shapes to chemically treated paper on the other end of the line.

A Burglar’s Solution To Your Aching Back! Here’s how it works. Just think of your back as a safe

with a 3-number combination lock. It’s obvious that one,or even 2 numbers, will never open it—but with allthree, you’ll crack the safe at the drop of a hat. It’s thesame with your back. It’s not a one-size-fits-all problem. If your doctor only uses one technique to help you—when you need 2 or 3—your back will NEVER get better,no matter how hard you try, and you’ll end up thinking...

“Do I Just Have To Live With It?”Why should you put up with pain when you’ve got a

HealthSource clinic right at your fingertips? Youshouldn’t, even if you think there’s no hope.

Why Can’t They Find YOUR Pain?So many folks who come to HealthSource have

been hurting for months–even years–because no onecould figure out WHERE their pain was coming from. That’s why you need a specialist–a pain detective–whoknows...

How to Track Down “Mysterious Pain!”Many back problems can’t be found with an x-ray, an

MRI or a CT scan. Why? Because it takes the mostsophisticated pain detector on the planet to find it—the human hand—and a trained one at that. Forinstance, here’s a common source of severe hip and legpain that’s usually mistaken for a slipped disc. It’scaused by a muscle in the butt-cheek that pinches thesciatic nerve as it passes by. Pain can shoot down yourleg and jab like a knife when you take a step.

5 Simple Solutions To Your Back Pain!(what the drug companies don’t want you to know)

What can be done about it? Well, since pain killersNEVER fix anything, you have to find the cause:

1) Weakness in 2 key muscles...2 easy exercises can bring relief2) Sacroiliac joints restricted...a gentle shift to unlock the hips3) Adhesions (scar tissue) in key bending muscles... amazing flexi-

bility when they’re free again4) Hip restrictions interfere with back movement... an overlooked

cause of deep aching and stiffness5) Binding in the lower spinal joints...shifting the stuck vertebra

can free it FAST—like WD-40!

Remember, at HealthSource you’re NOT just cover-ing up your pain, you’re getting at the hidden source.

A TRAITOR Within!

There’s nothing more disturbing than having a hid-den enemy—like a snake in the grass—lying in wait

and ready to strike! Like when you wake up feelinggreat—with a spring in your step and big plans for theday—and as you reach for your socks, instead, you get...

The Ultimate DOUBLE-CROSS!A sudden jolt of pain and you’re stuck halfway

between standing and sitting. You can’t take a breath, reach for your glasses or wiggle your pinkie. But evenworse is the hot burning pain that’s creeping downyour leg. And as you stand there, bummed out, frus-trated and locked up like a monkey in a cage, you askyourself:

4 Why is this happening to ME?4 Will I ever be OK again?4 Can I ever live a normal life?4 I’ve been good for months—what did I do wrong?4 If I can’t I trust my back, then...

“Who Can I Trust?”And that’s the right question, because when you

go for help, it seems there’s another conspiracy—aminefield of drugs, painful shots and dangerous surgeries. But...let’s face it, when your back hurts, there are really only 4 things you want to know:

4 Can you help me? 4 What brought this on?4 How long will it take? 4 What’s it gonna cost?

That’s why you don’t want to go to someone whogives you pain killers and muscle relaxants—then tellsyou to call back in 2 weeks if you’re not any better.Because...you know what that’s gonna do! Nothing! Just 2 more weeks to let whatever is wrong—getworse! No, you want to dig in and find out what youcan do to REALLY get better—not just hobble alongwasting the best years of your life being only half-fixed—living half a life.

ROCKEFELLER CENTER (continued):

• A crane supports the chosen tree while it is cut, after which it is moved to a custom-made telescoping trailer for transport to the Center.

• During the 1950s and 1960s, the tree was topped with a 4-ft. (1.2 m) plastic star, which was later changed to a fiberglass and gold-leaf star. Since 2004, the tree has been topped by a Swarovski crystal star weighing 550 lbs. (250 kg). The star stands 10 feet (3 m) tall and is made up of 25,000 crystals with a total of one million facets.

• Televised broadcasts of the lighting began in 1946, and in 1951, NBC began its televised ritual of the tree lighting, going live on The Kate Smith Show, hosted by the “first lady of radio.”

• In 1971, Rockefeller Center went green when it recycled the tree for the first time, grinding it into 30 three-bushel bags of mulch to cover the nature trails of upper Manhattan. Further environmental efforts were begun in 2007,

when the tree was lit with 30,000 LED lights for the first time. This resulted in a savings of 1,200 kilowatt hours less electricity per day over the tree’s old incandescent bulbs. That’s enough to power a 2,000-sq-ft house for a month! That year, the tree was used to donate lumber for a Habitat for Humanity house construction.

• This year the Rockefeller Center tree will remain lit until January 7, 2015, the day of the feast of Epiphany.
