Volunteers are the backbone ofMeals on Wheels. They are the oneswho are on the frontline, givingthousands of hours of their time anddriving thousands of milesthroughout Contra Costa County todeliver meals to frail, homeboundelders. Last year volunteersdelivered 235,438 meals!

Volunteers keep the costs ofprogram services low. In WestCounty alone volunteers provided9,224 hours of their time last year, saving a minimum of $100,000 inpersonnel and transportation costs! This is money that can then be usedfor meals or ancillary program cost.

Volunteers make Meals on Wheelsone of the most cost-effective socialservice programs for seniors. Mostimportant, over the years, theservices provided gratis byvolunteers have made it possible formany thousands of elders to remainin their own homes, where they aresafe and comfortable. This has inturn saved millions of dollars thatwould otherwise have been neededto provide assisted living facilities.

Meals on Wheels volunteerswere recognized for their serviceduring the annual hol idaycelebration. We'd like you to meetsome of them.

RC and Pat Overton have given their

time as volunteer drivers in San Pablo

and Richmond. Between them they have

delivered Meals on Wheels for 30 years!!

Marsha, program coordinator in West County,

paid tribute to both of them—RC with 20

years and Pat with 10 years of service. That is

outstanding and heartwarming. We thank both

of them from the bottom of our hearts!!

We also want to pay specialtribute to Warren Plumb andN o r m a n V a u g h n , b o t hvolunteer drivers who have nowp a s s e d o n . T h e i r d e e pdedication and compassion forhomebound seniors will beremembered. Warren andNorman are missed by us andthe people they visited andbrought meals and cheer.

Meals on Wheels volunteerscome from all walks of life andthey represent many age groupsand diverse experiences. Andyes, volunteers are truly thebackbone and lifeblood of Mealson Wheels. We thank each andeveryone, who give so selflessly, for their commitment to helpseniors live on their own.

We need volunteers!Volunteer drivers are always

needed, and from time to time we

also need help in the office. If you

are interested, please call us at:

information.

Gone...but notforgotten

Kathryn Macdonald, drives two routes in San Pablo and last year was on the road for

206 hours. Don Falconer (represented by Angie Gonzales) delivered meals for 92

hours in El Cerrito. And, Bettie and Charles Bohlig, working together, contributed

104 hours. Our thanks for your dedication.

Shyanne Elmore, 4 years old, has been helping

her mother deliver meals for the last 2 years!

She is sitting in the lap of her mother, Cheryl

Elmore, who is a substitute volunteer driver

for Shyanne's grandmother, Joan Elmore of

Richmond. Shyanne always rings the doorbell

and announces the arrival of the meal.

Currently she is our youngest volunteer and

we give special thanks to her.

With your caring support, weweathered a year of extreme budgetcuts at Meals on Wheels without cuttingservices or compromising the highquality of our meals. At the same time,we kept pace with the growing need fornutritious, home delivered meals forfrail elders in the community. Last yearMeals on Wheels delivered 235,438meals in Contra Costa County. Morethan half of these meals were madepossible by donations from individualssuch as yourself. Indeed, it was neces-sary to increase our subsidy of the mealsby 54%, to the highest level ever. Thanksto your generosity and the hard work ofour volunteers, we have continued tohelp many frail elders to remain livingin their homes, safely and with dignity.

As you can imagine, many seniorsdon't call us for help until a crisis occurs. Then, of course, they need help immedi-ately. Thanks to your support, we wereready and able to respond quickly eachtime we received that call for helpthroughout the year. Being able to startservices without delay is one of the mostcritical measures of success for ourprogram. When frail, homeboundelders are hungry and in need of meals,a waiting list cannot address the crisis. We are extremely proud to report thatfor the third straight year waiting listsfor services were virtually nonexistent.

As we look to our immediate future,we will continue to work hard toprovide the same high levels of servicewe have achieved, and avoid waitinglists for those services. We will continueto work with all of you in the commu-nity who share our commitment to thefrail, homebound seniors living among

us. As our county population ages at ahigh rate, the need for the Meals onWheels Program continues to growproportionately, and the importance ofcontributions from our loyal donors likeyou becomes even more critical.

Looking ahead, we have an enor-mous challenge to continue to meet thegrowing needs of the frail elders in ourcommunity. Within this challenge is anopportunity. If we work together now,to plan not only for next year, but for themany years to come, we believe it ispossible to ensure the future of Meals onWheels for coming generations of frailseniors in Contra Costa County. In themonths and years ahead, we will beasking many of you to partner with ustowards this end, as we establish acomprehensive planned giving pro-gram so that Meals on Wheels canalways be there, despite what mayh a p p e n i n S a c r a m e n t o a n dWashington, DC.

On behalf of all the frail, home-bound seniors we serve, we offer youour sincere thanks. Your dedication andsupport to Meals on Wheels is aninspiration to us.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated volunteers who are too numerous to list. The tireless work ofhundreds of volunteers makes it possible to administer the Meals on Wheels effectively. Volunteers do not only delivermeals, they also bring menus, birthday gifts, holiday favors and they provide important social contact for the manyhomebound frail, frequently isolated elders.

Thank you all who have made generous financial contributions either directly or through workplace or anonymousgiving, to help us serve the many frail elders in our community. While we have made every attempt to acknowledgeworkplace donors, lack of updated lists have made it difficult to do so: please know that we appreciate your support even ifyour name is not listed here. Every single donation is important and we regret that space is limited making it impossible tolist all our donors. Here we acknowledge all who made gifts of $100 or more to Meals on Wheels of Contra Costa during thecalendar year 2003. Thank you everyone!
