Summer Sessions encompasses six weeks of programming arranged into curated, thematic weeklong “mini festivals” based on the concept of “Great Americas Songbook.” This theme takes the idea of the American song tradition and extends it to the entirety of the “the Americas,” encompassing North, Central, and South America.

WEEK 1 • JULY 9-12

DANCE & RHYTHMRhythms of life, rhythms of the street, rhythms of the world—the music of movement and tradition are the theme for Week 1. The world’s greatest tap dancer brings a week of improvisation with his new jazz-influenced project to Miner Auditorium, while in the JHL, the rhythms of South America, from Chile to Brazil to Venezuela, are in focus.

WEEK 5 • AUGUST 6-9

NEW AMERICAN SONGBOOKPianist Joey Alexander has established himself as a modern master with maturity far beyond his years, taking the jazz tradition into the future.

CARIBBEAN CONNECTIONSMasterful artists with roots in Guyana, Trinidad, Columbia, Venezuela, and Cuba are highlighted this week, each crossing borders of genre and style.

WEEK 6 • AUGUST 13-16

GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOKTrumpeter and composer Herb Alpert made indeli-ble contributions to the modern American songbook as a solo artist and founder of the Tijuana Brass.

WEEK 2 • JULY 16-19

BLUES & ROOTSThe deep roots of the folk music forms of the Americas, their contemporary expansions, and inspiring new directions mark this special week. In Miner Auditorium a modern master of the Delta blues holds court for four nights, and in JHL, singular artists with roots in Mexico and Cuba infuse their traditions with influences from around the world.

WEEK 3 • JULY 23-26

BLUES WEEKThe backbone of all American popular music, from jazz to rock, is celebrated during this exclusive week. With nights devoted to Bay Area-based greats, New Orleans traditions, women in blues, and a harmonica virtuoso from India, these perfor-mances showcase the wide-ranging diversity of the art form.

WEEK 4 • JULY 30-AUGUST 2

JAZZ LUMINARIESEach recognized as an NEA Jazz Master in 2017 and 2006 respectively, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Chick Corea have earned 24 GRAMMY Awards between them, and share a passion for innova-tion and musical exploration. Each brings their newest projects, a classic piano and vocal duo and an exploration of flamenco and jazz, for this exclusive week.
