Welcome to the 14th Annual Spirit of the West Cowboy Gathering, in Ellensburg, Washington.
Ellensburg sits on the east slopes of the Cascade Range, 120 miles east of Seattle. Beautiful cattle & ranching country, a college town where Central Washington University is located. An old cowboy town where you might see a horse tied up in front of the tavern.
With this as a backdrop, Spirit of the West, now in its 14th year, has venues throughout the town as well as the Kittitas Valley Event Center (fairgrounds), adjacent to town. Main evening concerts are held at the Central WA University Music Building. We are happy to draw big name entertainers along with local talent. Three days of excellent western music & poetry. Downtown performances will be in seven venues throughout the downtown core.
Gear show vendors from across the northwest will be showcasing home décor, western wear, jewelry, and much more. While at the Kittitas Valley Event Center (fairgrounds), watch men and women during the Cowboy Traditions Rach Roping competition; Friday and Saturday. Finish the weekend with our Sunday schedule starting with Cowboy Church and Sunday afternoon concert.

Singer, songwriter, rancher, horseman, and the original, world-famous Yahoo!® yodeler,
Wylie Gustafson is a real life cowboy born into a 4th generation ranching family on the
empty sprawl of Northern Montana. He proves himself a never-boring entertainer as well as a
highly adept songwriter. When not performing, Wylie raises and trains cow horses on his
family ranch near Conrad, MT. He is especially known for his songs that celebrate America’s
culture of ranching and farming. Wylie and the Wild West have performed worldwide since
1989 and are considered a “National Treasure” by American Folklife Center in Washington DC.

Chris Isaacs is a poet who has lived the life that he writes about. He has seen
life from a cowboy’s point of view for all of his 60-plus years, and his poems and
stories are alive with the heart and humor of the cowboy’s life. He can usually find the funny side of any situation,
and is considered by many to be one of the finest humorists in the country. In
between jobs you could usually find him making a living as a horseshoer.
Chris Isaacs
The purity of the songs written and sung by Trinity Seely are a deep-rooted
reflection of the ranching lifestyle she lives and loves. Trinity was raised in the heart of the Chilcotin, of British
Columbia, Canada with horses and music in her soul. Daily ranch work gives her
ample experiences from which she writes most of her songs. Singing from the
perspective of a ranch wife and mother, Trinity’s honest lyrics touch the hearts of audiences nationwide and have garnered
numerous nominations and awards.

Composers of original western music and cowboy poetry. JB Barber has been writing cowboy poetry
for 15 years. He draws upon his experience growing up in Texas and Oregon, being a rodeo
rough-stock rider and everything in between. Farmer Dave Fulfs writes and performs his
own music reminiscent of the old Silver Screen Era. He has spent his life as a wheat
farmer in the Palouse country. Their combination of cowboy poetry and western
music is a unique experience for listeners.
Thatch is 13 years old with a passion for cowboy heritage. He writes cowboy poetry from experience, both his own and those of others. He also recites the classics, keeping classic cowboy poetry alive. Thatch Elmer is from Harrisville Utah, is a co-recipient of the first annual “Rod McQueary/Sue Wallis” scholarship award which was presented to him at the 2014 National Cowboy Poetry gathering in Elko, Nevada.

Paul’s smooth vocals will remind you of the legendary Marty Robbins. Veteran of cowboy gatherings near
and far, Paul sings traditional ballads from the frontier days. But don’t be fooled – this cowboy has a twinkle
in his eye and an ever ready sense of humor. His first-rate guitar accompaniment completes the package.
Working as an outfitter in the mountains near Naches, Washington, Paul lives the life he sings of.

Lauralee Northcott is a singer/songwriter, cowgirl poet and award winning pine needle basket maker. She shares stories, poems, and beautiful music. It is almost like there is a campfire around you as she sings. A veteran wilderness guide and cook, with over 30 years of trails under her saddle blanket, Lauralee’s per- formance will take you along for an adventure worth taking. From hot-licks western swing, to meaningful ballads, along with authentic poetry, she’s sure to be a crowd pleaser.

ANDY BALESRaised in Joseph, Oregon and Salmon, Idaho, Andy started playing guitar with Old Time Fiddlers at age 9 at barn/grange dances. He grew up irrigating, putting up hay, building fences, etc., and enjoyed working cattle whenever he got the chance. Although he does not currently own cattle, he does have horses and mules and enjoys riding with wife Debbie. Andy has spent his life playing western music and his latest album is the mule inspired “Long Eared Coupe Deville”.
BARBARA NELSONBarbara plays guitar and sings western music in all its many forms; traditional, folk, blues, old standards, and swing. She has performed solo in many different places; Elko, Ellensburg, Oregon State Parks program, Hamley’s Western Store, Pendleton Arts Center, and recently opened the awards ceremonies for the AWA (Academy of Western Artists) in Fort Worth, Texas. She loves to sing and play guitar and this shows through in her performances.
DuANE NELSONFueled by a passion for the cowboy lifestyle and a love of entertaining, Duane has delighted audiences across the Northwest for the last decade. From brandings to county fairs, private parties to cowboy gatherings, Duane can be found reciting classics old and new, along with his own poems. Duane lives on a ranch near The Dalles, Oregon, with his wife, Lori.
DAVID ANDERSONAND JENNY LYNNDavid sings western music, which is about what he knows best, riding horses and being a cowboy. He participates in many cowboy poetry and western music gatherings all across the Western United States. David enjoys bringing his music to others by performing at care centers, fundraisers and parties. He is often accompanied by his two daughters Amanda and Jenny Lynn who have been singing since before they could walk.

ROCKIN’ HWRockin HW was formed in 2000 and has performed on National Stages, Campfires, Awards Ceremonies, Fairs, and Regional Cowboy Gatherings. Members include Alan Halvorson, Ramon Selby (NW Swing Hall of Fame inductee) and Alan Troope. Our goal is to provide a remembrance of the songs and tunes that help chronicle our history. We like to see people smile. Come join us. Just enjoy the ride.
KATHY MOSS (A.K. MOSS)With pen in one hand, camera in the other and reins between her teeth, A. K. Moss has a passion for writing and western heritage that shows in everything she does. She has been performing her own work since 1998 throughout the West Coast States. Living in remote Grant County, situated in Eastern Oregon, Kathy’s writing comes straight from the heart and soul of the American West. She writes what she knows and believes in, with pride in western history, heritage and the people.
JOE SARTIN (COYOTE JOE)Raised between a working ranch and the Duck reservation in North Central Nevada, Joe learned a life of hard work and respect for both the land and my fellow man. “My music is from lessons learned on the trial and by the hearth of home. I play and sing from my heart and invite you to close your eyes and ride along with me as I tell you my stories I have lived.”
JANET BAILEY“Since beginning my exposure to folk music and Americana in the 60’s, I have now evolved to exclusively singing and performing Western songs. I have shared my love for this music—both traditional and contemporary—in 14 different countries. My favorite venue is house concerts, where I can meet and talk to like-minded folks. I have, though, sung at really large venues, including military bases and opened for Brad Paisley when he toured locally. I feel really connected to this music, and love to share these stories with others.”

STAN KVISTADStan’s first mule came in 1999 which lead him to his current addiction, “I now have 10, oh well, and nobody is perfect!” In 1996 he joined the Whatcom Co. BCH where he got into the trail work and spent a few years as president. 2005 found himself looking to get out of the traffic jams and by an act of God he found Chiliwist and a couple of years later he met a raven-haired beauty and life is good.
TOM SWEARINGENTom is an Oregon horseman whose cowboy poetry is often inspired by his own experiences and observations from the saddle. Tom brings his stories to life with rhythm and rhyme and a style that makes him a popular performer. Tom is a multi-award winner whose poems have been featured in numerous magazines and publications and has recorded two CDs, each nominated as finalist for WMA Cowboy Poetry CD of the Year.
TR STEWARTTR’s love for the west and the backcountry led him to becoming a guide for North Cascade Outfitters. Along the trail, strapped to the back of a mule, TR packs his guitar to play the campfire circuit in the Pasayten and Sawtooth Wilderness. His music showcases this Twisp, Washington cowboy’s wide range of musical talents.

Our purpose is to reach the farmer, rancher, rodeo cowboy, and those associated with the western world lifestyle not being reached by traditional methods. Sometimes, folks feel that the church has been too churchy for the world and the world too worldly for the church. Our intention is to break down the religious walls and meet people where they are.
With a backdrop of over 20 years of ministry to the western world, Al & Joanie have dedicated their lives to helping others. Real people, talking to real people about a real God, making it hard for people to go to a real hell. Their past is marked with God’s call of preparation. Their present is a thriving endeavor that pushes them, challenges them, and excites them everyday. Their future is a new adventure in God. Leading them with impacting amounts of vision to change the world. Al & Joanie Parsons are bringing a dynamic, fresh, format to “Been there, done that!”

Presented by Cowboy Traditions Ranch Roping
For more than a hundred years, Cowboys have made their living through the skilled use of horses and rope.
Ranch roping is a style of roping that promotes horsemanship and stockmanship by showcasing the ability to take the shot that presents itself. Shots are often from different positions with various rope angles, which can be a fancy yet functional loop. Spirit of the West Cowboy Gathering is proud to partner with Cowboy Traditions Ranch Roping this year; Ranch Roping is an event you will not want to miss!
Cowboy Traditions Ranch Roping events will be judged as if the judge owned the cattle. For instance, the yearling doctoring event will be judged as if participants are doctoring a sick animal. Ranch roping should portray how a good cowboy would handle his horse, rope and cow in a manner that is as low stress as possible. In this competition, time does not determine the winner; instead points are earned for fancy or difficult catches and proper handling of cattle.

A historical overview of cowboys in Kittitas County, from Ben Snipes to the modern rodeo. It also includes how the cultural idea and romance of cowboys evolved to what we know and think of today. The exhibit contains objects like tools used by cowboys at work, like saddles, ropes, and branding irons; items awarded through the rodeo, like belt buckles and trophies; and items that explore a romantic view of cowboys, like songbooks and posters. Stories of local cowboys will also be included.
PaINTING WITh WaTerCoLorSLocal artists will be demonstrating the use of watercolors. Paper and paints will be available for those budding artists who would like to show their creativity by painting with watercolors.
PINe NeedLe BaSkeT WeaVINGLocal basket weavers will display award winning handmade pine needle baskets and demonstrate the art of weaving baskets using pine needles, sweet grass and other adornments. Learn the types of items needed to perform this art and the types of needles they use along with the preparation processes involved in sorting and soaking.
Workshops are a two day informational event where individuals and groups demonstrate arts and crafts of the West, speak about the West
and provide fun and educational activities for children and adults. Workshops highlight local people who keep alive the skills and spirit of the Western and Native Ways by providing hands-on interactive
demonstrations and presentations.

Wood CarVINGWatch local wood carvers demonstrate their skills as they sculpt wood by hand to create many unusual and useful items. Learn about wood selection and the different techniques of carving such as chip, relief, caricature, and whittling, plus see how a carving knife, chisel, and gouge are used. The Spirit of the West Cowboy Gathering is pleased to support “STAMPEDE”, the annual elementary school student contest in celebration of the “Spirit of the West” and the “Elementary Code of the West.” Through STAMPEDE, students have the opportunity to express themselves artistically and be recognized for their efforts.
In 2018, Karen Quest joins us for the STAMPEDE program. Dubbed “America’s Funniest Cowgirl”, Karen Quest has been blazing a trail since 1998 with her one-woman award-winning original comedy act, Cowgirl Tricks. Skillful trick roping, impressive whip cracking, magic, music, outstanding audience rapport and improvisational kooky cowgirl shenanigans have proven wildly popular at domestic and international venues for audiences of all ages.
A former circus girl with a B.A. in Theatre from California State University at Northridge, her skills includes juggling, clowning, acrobatics, fire-eating, unicycling, stunt work, and teaching. Karen loves sharing her expertise and decades of experience performing for family audiences at state and county fairs, festivals, and all sorts of events in 30 states and 10 countries. Have gig, will travel!
Because of her peripatetic touring lifestyle, she’s never been able to have her own horse, but she is an expert at riding other people’s horses. She’ll scoop poop for riding – just ask her!

My name is Naomi Anne Roghair and I am the daughter of Chane and Tricia Roghair. All my life I have lived in Kittitas County and have been blessed to live on a large ranch with my big family. Training horses, moving cows, haying and school are among my favorite things to do. I believe our western lifestyle has shaped me into the person I am today and I am so grateful.
As a homeschooled student, I enjoy being close to my horses. It allows me to work with them daily, as well as enjoying all my horse-related activities and hobbies. Plans for my future include participating in the Running Start program and attending college. I hope to have a career that includes my interests, such as horse training, architectural engineering or music.
I have attended the Spirit of the West Cowboy Gathering for many years and the event holds great memories for me. Every February, my family and I would look forward to the Gathering to watch the ranch roping, visit the vendors, listen to music and enjoy some poetry.
As Miss Spirit of the West, I am very fortunate to represent the culture and lifestyle that I love, live and support.

Molly MorrowA versatile photographer as
comfortable working in the studio as she is riding a horse, Molly Morrow has used her camera to capture the Western way of life for more than 35 years. With a creative spark and engaging attitude, Morrow specializes in photographing the people, places and traditions of the West. Her portrait work, as well as her images of professional rodeos, landscapes and cowhands, can be found everywhere from print and online publications, commercial advertising and art galleries, to family homes and offices.
“Capturing the moment is what it’s all about,” Morrow said. “In a fleeting second the opportunity is gone. My job is to save that moment for all to see and share. Whether it is a loving glance or a spinning bull ride, salting away the image is what’s important.”
Morrow shoots rodeos throughout the West including The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and nightly awards presentations in Las Vegas, Cheyenne Frontier Days, PRCA Big Sky Pro Rodeo RoundUp, Ellensburg Rodeo, Columbia River Circuit Finals, Bares and Broncs Futurity, Coulee City PRCA Last Stand Rodeo and the Pendleton Round-Up.
In addition to Western Horseman, Molly’s images also have appeared in national publications including Pro Rodeo Sports News, Rodeo Fame, Spin to Win, Your Competitor News and The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s The Ketchpen. Her work has also appeared in Western Way Magazine and has been featured in the Art Spur section of www.CowboyPoetry.com. She shows annually at The Great Western Living and Design Exhibition Show in Great Falls, Montana.
A western image of Cowboy Mike Frailey on the Eaton Cattle Drive in the Yakima Canyon has been selected as this year’s poster image for the 2018 Spirit of the West Cowboy Poetry Gathering held each February in Ellensburg, Washington.
A graduate of Central Washington University, Molly lives with her husband Joe in Ellensburg, Washington. In 2017 Molly was selected as Central Washington University’s Art Department Alumna at the College of Art & Humanities Alumni Day. When not on the rodeo trail you can find her working in her full service studio.
