On the vny out the party passedSptirxrick Hill, an emineuc that has never been climbed by n cyclist. To the sarprise ofthe Down Eaeters, Shnrman annonnced that he woul.i ride up the hill if any one of thePortland men would ride down. This was very promptly agreed to, as tte local menthoafibt the hill nnrideable. Some of the raen rode down tte hill, as nlso did Shurman, and then on ftrririn at th bottom Shurman turned round and rode to the top,to th amazement of those who h?.d narer seea ShcruiF.n ride, 'ibis waa on Sunday, and tha aohiTrnent of the Lynn roan made the locals anxious to sea what the visitoroonld do with the Park Street Hill, a terror to Portland wheelmen, and one that hasnever been climbed more than twice in succession. So on Monday the p irtv repaired tothe hill, and after Carsley, Allen and Littlefield had climbed it once aud cried enough,Shnrmsn went at it and went np and down eii tim-- s without a dinruount. Tho wiDe merchants of Taris held atneetiug the other day to petition thomunicipal council for the suppression oftho municipal laboratory, which they de-clare is ruining their business. M. CHr-ar- d,

the chemical analyst and managerof the laboratory, has just publishod inine jir a letter in wmen te shows thatwhat the wino merchants roillj' claim isa sort of impunity to adulterate their"wino, and to defraud the state and thacity of I'aris of their dues.

Ho s.iys: What tho wine merchantswant h permission to sell to the con-sumer water at the same price as wiue.Tho municipal laboratory draws samplesof wine from the casks as they enterI'aris, and also samples from the samebarrels after they are placed in the

.Stores of the wino merchants. There-sui- tarrived at by tho laboratory is, that

the wine is mixed with water in largoproportions. Py adding water fourcasks of wine are turned into five, andthe laboratory exports havo calculatedthat more than J, 000 wine merchantspractice this kind of fraud. Moreover, the experts havo discovered that wineis clandestinely made in I'aris of rais-ins, apples, pears, prunes, etc. Otherwino merchants mix low-price- d Spanishwines with tho produce of French vine-yards, and koII the mixture as genuineFrench wine. In this wy the city ofParis has been defrauded of nearly300,000 franco during the last fewmonths, as wine thus manufacturedpays no oc troi du?s.
