Sewage pumped into waterways By Our Staff Reporter Nearly 50% of the raw sew- age received at Metrowater pumping station, Nandanam is being diverted into the Adyar River instead of being con- veyed to the Koyambedu sew- age treatment plant (STP) through T. Nagar. The other major waterways like Cooum, Buckingham Ca- nal, Otteri Nullah and Mam- balam Canal also carry raw sewage. They are silted and choked with garbage and other waste. Construction debris is also being dumped regularly into the waterways. According to sources, the one million litres per day (MLD) capacity of the Nandanam pumping station is not enough to bear the load of domestic and commercial waste from surrounding areas. The excess sewage load is instead let into the Adyar River in the backyard. An official said that Metrowater’s current capac- ity of STPs in the city is 700 MLD whereas the city gener- ates between 1,500 and 2,000 MLD sewage. There is at least 50% shortage of resources in addressing the sewage prob- lem in the city, he added.

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

Tamil Cinema Music 24Besides ‘Ellam Inba Mayam, the famed MLV-P. Leela duet,

other songs in ‘Manamagal’ too became popular. One of themwas ‘ Chinnan Chiru Kiliye’, a famous song written by theMahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar and sung by MLV and thesinger-actor of yester-decades V. N. Sundaram. Many yearslater, Sundaram told this writer (and also on camera for thiswriter’s TV film on MLV) that this song was recorded twice. After the first recording at a Madras City studio, NSK was notsatisfied with its quality. So he had it recorded again at hisfavorite studio Newtone in Kilpauk, profusely apologizing tothe two singers for troubling them! That was NSK!

Another popular duet in the film ‘ Iru kaadhalar magizhndhe’was picturised on Padmini and Sahasranamam. Not many areaware that the male voice singing this song along with MLVwas that of Subbaraman himself! It was the only occasion thathe sang a song in films.

Subbaraman composed music for several popular movieslike ‘Leila Majnu’ and ‘Devadas’. It is a matter of deep regretthat he passed away at a young age under somewhat sadcircumstances. There were rumors at that time that his endwas not natural...!

Coincidentally, with Subbaraman’s passing, MLV’s cinemarket also appears to have dipped. Of course the era ofClassical music in films was also fast fading away. MLV’s lastplayback song was for Hamse Geethe, a Kannada film, in whichshe sings a Jayadeva ashtapadhi.

THE STORY OF NANDANARThe story of Nandanar, as immortalised by Gopalakrishna

Bharathi, was filmed thrice, each time with a few Carnaticmusic greats.

Not many are aware that some legendary figures and giantsof classical Carnatic music had links with Tamil cinema. Theyhad no serious intention or aim of becoming movie stars and yetthey did appear in movies. But soon they abandoned ship and,to mix metaphors, took off to greener pastures on their hometurf! Some had the desire to flash on screen and but their wishesremained mere dreams.

The glittering list of gems includes many legends of music andcontains many surprises - Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer,Musiri Subramania Iyer, G. N. Balasubramaniam,Thiruvavaduthurai N. Rajaratnam Pillai, Mysore T.Chowdaiah, S. Rajam, S. Balachandar, Chembai VaidyanathaBhagavathar, Palakkad T. S. Mani Iyer, K. V. Narayanaswami,Chittoor Subramania Pillai, Kalakkad Ramanarayana Iyer,Thiruvengadu Subramania Pillai, Mangalampalli Balam-uralikrishna, T. N. Seshagopalan. And, yes, even SemmangudiSrinivasa Iyer. Quite a list that! And that too a male list!

The first trained classical Carnatic musician to enter TamilCinema was Sambur Vadagarai Subbaiah Bhagavathar. Hewas a top stage star of his day and folks came to hear him singaccompanied by the harmonium maestro K. S. Devudu Iyer, who was the most famous harmonium-player of them all.

S.V. Subbaiah Bhagavathar had a fine voice and sang withverve. His on-stage ‘duels’ with the famed harmonist were agreat attraction per se and drew huge crowds. SVS would singa line of a song and Devudu Iyer would play it on his harmoniumadding some touches of his own.

Bhagavathar would then sing the same line once more withinspired ‘sangathies’ of his own making gestures with his handsand face challenging the harmonist. And never the one to saydie, Devudu Iyer would play the same line again adding morestrokes which would be difficult for the human voice to repro-duce with the same effect and impact! Thus the duel would goon with the same song for seemingly long unending minutes butthe audiences loved it all and cheered the two wildly with glee.In fact groups would be formed supporting either Bhagavatharor Iyer! In some rich towns and villages, even bets were placedon the outcome of the battle of musical wits! The play, scene, its content and all were forgotten during these friendly duels!
