Coach Jeff Ables’ Bowie football team had its strength and conditioning program suspended for COVID-19 reasons, an Austin school district spokesman confirmed Sunday. [JOHN GUTIERREZ/FOR STATESMAN]
“I think a lot of that stuff can be fixed with repetition and correc-tion,” she said. “When things are not done prop-erly, you explain to them why.”
Alexa McDonald, a 5-8 rising sophomore, was the team’s leading scorer at 5.8 points per game and averaged 2.7 rebounds a game. McDonald is quick and athletic, traits the program has lacked over the years.
“I’m super excited to have that kid with
me,” Cray said about McDonald. “She defi-nitely has a lot of talent. She does love basketball. My challenge is to chal-lenge her and make her a better basketball player.”
Kiana Sapien, a rising senior 6-1 post, averaged 3.9 ppg and 5.8 rpg. She missed part of the district campaign because of aca-demic ineligibility.
McCray said skill is important but not the only factor in building a program.
“When you have that will to fight for it and that grit, that alone can change the culture of a program,” she said. “I’m not going to let up on these kids.
They may think people have given up on them. Hey, I’m not that indi-vidual. I’m here with new vibes. I want nothing but positivity for these kids, build them up, and cor-rect them when they’re doing things wrong. Who knows? We may shock a lot of people.”
Cray prefers a fast-paced, up-and-down style of play but isn’t locked into it.
“... I do understand when I have to slow things down and adjust to what’s going on in the game,” she said. “I have to see what I’m working with and get a better understanding of what they’re capable of.”

“Having students or staff presumed or con-firmed positive and/or have primary exposure to COVID-19 could lead to suspension of activi-ties, as it has in these instances,” Telles said.
A s f o r L a G r a n g e , the district made this
announcement: “Our athletic program has been following the health a n d h y g i e n e g u i d e -lines announced by the Texas Education Agency a n d t h e U n i v e r s i t y Interscholastic League. These practices include s o c i a l d i s t a n c i n g i n workouts, temperature checks, pre-screening techniques, providing hand sanitizer stations, no shared water and
working in small groups. These same techniques will be used when work-outs resume.”
Bastrop football coach T o d d P a t m o n s a i d his school will restart strength and condition-ing training June 29.
