During a truly international night of racing in 2011, JJ The Jet Plane (SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}) won the G2 AlQuoz Sprint, Skysurfers (GB) (E Dubai) captured the G2 Godolphin Mile, and the filly Khawlah (Ire) (CapeCross {Ire}) took the G2 UAE Derby over Master ofHounds (Kingmambo). But it was the card=s four Group1 races the crowd came to see, and they didn=tdisappoint. In the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen, HongKong=s Rocket Man (Aus) (Viscount {Aus}) beat theBob Baffert-trained Euroears (Langfuhr) in the G1 DubaiGolden Shaheen. The 7-year-old gelding Presvis (GB)(Sakhee) beat the veteran mare River Jetez (SAf) (JetMaster {SAf}) in the G1 Dubai Duty Free, before the ill-fated Rewilding (GB) (Tiger Hill {Ire}) landed one for thehome team in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic. In theDubai World Cup, Japan secured a one-two finish, withVictoire Pisa (Jpn) (Neo Universe {Jpn}) confirming hisvictory in the G1 Japan Cup over Transcend (Jpn) (WildRush). The win came just weeks after Japan wasdevastated by a massive earthquake and resultingtsunami.

On Tap for 2012... Japan could once again be well-represented in Dubaithis year. The country=s pro-tem Horse of the YearOrfevre (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}), who became Japan=sseventh Triple Crown winner last season, is coming offa victory in the G1 Arima Kinen at Nakayama Dec. 25,and trainer Yasutoshi Ikee said afterward he is mappingout a 2012 international campaign that could include astart on World Cup night. Trainer Bob Baffert has never been shy to send arunner to Dubai. In 1998, the previous year=s GI Kentucky Derby hero Silver Charm (Silver Buck) won

the G1 Dubai World Cup, andBaffert doubled up three yearslater with Captain Steve (Fly SoFree). In 2009, he shipped overdual champion Indian Blessing(Indian Blessing), and the fleetfilly ran a game second in the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen to BigCity Man (Northern Afleet).Baffert could have an imposingduo for the 2012 World Cupcard. The Hall of Fame trainerindicated that The Factor (WarFront) was being considered forthe Golden Shaheen after his

lights-out win in the GI Malibu S. at Santa Anita Dec.26. Baffert is also mulling a run in the World Cup itselfwith Game On Dude (Awesome Again). Last season,Baffert requested and received an invitation for the GI Santa Anita H. winner, but ultimately left the geldingin his stall in Southern California after he developed afoot abscess. Since then, Game On Dude has raised hisprofile even higher. He won the GI Goodwood S. lastOctober and finished second in the GI Breeders= CupClassic.

Another prominent horse who could show up inDubai is the ABudapest Bullet,@ the European sprint starOverdose (GB) (Starborough {GB}). Owner ZoltanMikoczy is reportedly considering a number ofDubai World Cup Carnival races in the lead-up tohis ultimate goal, the G1 Emirates NBD Al QuozSprint on World Cup night. AWe have gone toDubai independently, but will be there to apply foran invitation to the World Cup meeting,@ saidMikoczy. AIt would be a very proud moment totake part, as to our knowledge, no horse fromEastern Europe has ever participated at themeeting.@ Now seven, the Hungarian-basedOverdose has won 16 of his 19 career starts. Hecapped his 2011 season with a win in the G3 PremioCarlo & Francesco Aloisi at Capannelle in November, hisfirst start since running fourth in the G1 King=s Stand S.at Royal Ascot. AHe is entered in races in Dubai on Jan. 20 and Feb. 3, but races on either Feb. 23 or Mar. 1 would probably be better, as they would give usmore time to prepare him,@ said Mikoczy.

Dozen for Jockeys’ Challenge... The World Cup Carnival begins with cards today andtomorrow. The double header features the third annualMeydan Masters International Jockeys= Challenge,

which pits 12 of the world=s top jockeys againsteach other in a series of four races. Godolphin Geared Up for Carnival... Trainers Mahmood Al Zarooni and Saeed bin Suroor arein positive mood ahead of the Dubai World Cup Carnival.Al Zarooni provided updates on his more high-profileprospects, including four-time Group 1 winner Xin Xu Lin(Brz) (Wondertross). The South American star makes hisnext start in the Royal Blue in next Thursday=s round oneof the G3 Maktoum Challenge. AXin Xu Lin didn=t run abad race when he was fifth behind Khawlah (Ire) (CapeCross {Ire}) in the [G2] UAE Derby last year,@ Al Zaroonicommented. AHe runs from the front in his races and gota bit tired near the end. We will see how he gets on nextweek before deciding where to go with him, while I haveearmarked rounds two and three of the MaktoumChallenge for Casamento (Ire) (Shamardal), Dubai Prince(Ire) (Shamardal) and French Navy (GB) (Shamardal). ZipTop (Ire) (Smart Strike) is a candidate for the [Feb. 9]UAE 2000 Guineas and he could have a possible tilt atthe [Mar. 31] UAE Derby afterwards. We haveMonterosso (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Blue Bunting(Dynaformer) out here and they could be aimed at SuperSaturday [Mar. 10], when Blue Bunting could have herprep race for the [Mar. 31] G1 Dubai Sheema Classic, while Opinion Poll (Ire) (Halling) will be readied foranother crack at the [Mar. 31] G3 Dubai Gold Cup.@ Saeed bin Suroor, who has been leading trainer at theCarnival for the last four years, added, AThe horses havebeen working nicely and I am looking forward to seeingthem run. They will improve for their first outings of theseason, but are in good form and I am hopeful of a nicestart to the year. We will try to be the leading trainer atthe Dubai World Cup Carnival again, but it won=t beeasy. There are some very good horses coming toMeydan from all over the world this year and it will betough to win the title for a fifth time.@

Gold Readied for Carnival Challenge... Conditioner Richard Hannon has earmarked a possibletilt at the Mar. 31 G1 Dubai World Cup for AndrewTinkler=s Dubawi Gold (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Following the4-year-old=s fourth in the Dec. 11 G1 Hong Kong Mile, the dual G1 2000 Guineas runner-up and G2 Celebration Mile hero is set to be stepped up in trip.AWe know that Dubawi Gold is very good over the mile, but everyone here is adamant that it would be noproblem stepping up to 10 furlongs and, having alreadywon on the Polytrack at Lingfield, it would be temptinghaving a look at the Dubai World Cup itself,@ Hannonexplained. ADubawi Gold is so tough and very laid-backand he never turned a hair when he got back from HongKong. He has to stay 30 days before he can head off onhis travels again, but we could send him to Dubai at theend of January or early February. That would give himample time to get used to the surface at Meydan and theplan would be to run him on Super Saturday, whichwould help make our minds up as to whether to aim forthe stars and go for the big one, stick to what he knowsbest and keep to the grass for the nine-furlong G1 DubaiDuty Free or go for the G2 Godolphin Mile, which is alsoon the dirt.@

got her injury. At the minute, she is recovering from it

and we=ve not yet got to the stage where we=ll decide

where she starts. We=ll think about that in a couple of

months.@

Balada Sale to Represent Bary Stable... Argentinian sensation Balada Sale (Arg) (Not For Sale{Arg}) has joined the Pascal Bary yard, Racing Postrevealed yesterday. Three times an authoritative winnerat the top level in her native country last year, the4-year-old filly now runs for Katsumi Yoshida. Havre de Grace Big Easy Bound... Havre de Grace (Saint Liam), a leading candidate forHorse of the Year honors, is slated to arrive early this

morning at Fair Grounds inpreparation for her 5-year-oldcampaign. The bay may kick off2012 in the New Orleans LadiesS. at Fair Grounds Mar. 17. AThat[possible Horse of the Year title]is going to be a real nail-biter,that=s for sure, but I=d rather bein my spot than anybody else=s,@said trainer Larry Jones. AI don=tsee anybody more deserving thanshe is for Horse of the Year. She=s one of the few candidateswith a winning record, and wecould have kept her undefeated if

we=d picked some easier spots for her. We could haverun her in the [GI] Breeders= Cup Ladies= Classic like wedid the year before. STRONACH STARTS INVESTMENT CORPS When Sunday Racing Club's Buena Vista (Jpn) retiredfrom racing following the G1 Arima Kinen on ChristmasDay, some 40 co-owners, part of a racing syndicate, piled into the winner's circle at Nakayama for a send-offcelebration. If a new plan by Frank Stronach comes tofruition, that number may seem quaint in a few months'time. Stronach, owner of Adena Springs and one of NorthAmerica's leading owners and breeders, is hoping toestablish six publicly held corporations that will offerinvestors the chance to buy into racehorse partnershipsfor $10 a share. To that end, Stronach and relatedcompanies have filed papers with the Securities andExchange Commission (SEC). They are currentlyawaiting comments from regulators. The companies arenamed after some of Stronach's most successfulracehorses: Awesome Again, Ghostzapper, GingerPunch, Macho Uno, Perfect Sting and Red Bullet. Each corporation will be comprised of 20Thoroughbreds--or 120 horses in total. The horses werepurchased as yearlings in 2011 and are now two. Planscall for 405,000 shares to be sold in each corporationat $10 a share, which, if all shares sell, would gross$4.05 million. However, Golden Pegasus Racing Inc.,an entity controlled by The Stronach Group establishedto manage the corporations, is set to retain a 10%interest in each. Golden Pegasus will be paid $150 a day for horses intraining, which includes training, blacksmith and routineveterinary care, and $50 for horses out of training. Each company will also maintain a $100,000 fund forvet emergencies. Golden Pegasus will decide who trainsthe horses, as well as where and at what level thehorses run. The Stronach Group owns racetracks across NorthAmerica, including Santa Anita, Gulfstream, Laurel andPimlico, as well as interests in Xpressbet and AmToteand the television network HRTV. Stronach and his buying team, including JackBrothers, Dan Hall and Mark Roberts, were extremelyactive at nearly all levels of the market at the 2011yearling sales. Adena Springs signed for no fewer than119 yearlings for $8,623,667, for an average of$72,468. The median price Adena paid was $40,000.Adena checked in behind only John Ferguson as NorthAmerica=s leading buyer of yearlings in 2011. Cont. p8

Jay Sloan operates the High Five Racing Stable, which offers Afriends-and-family type@ partnerships, with a focus on fillies towards the goal of maximizingtheir investment. But, following yesterday=s good-looking debut from the cleverly named Cop A Tude, itturns out that the occasional colt is just fine too. AWe do prefer fillies for their residual value, and itwouldn=t really have gotten us anywhere to put this coltthrough the ring,@ said Sloan, who is based in northernVirginia and works in the financial and accountingbusiness. ASo, we just thought we=d go on and seewhat might come of it.@ Sloan, who races Cop A Tude in partnership with JeffJaffee, bred the colt from Emotional Storm (StormBoot), whom he acquired for $39,000 as a FTMMAYjuvenile and raced to five wins and nearly $143,000 inearnings. She now resides at Pope McLean=s CrestwoodFarm, who Ahave done a wonderful job with her,@ Sloanstated. The mare=s first two foals to race each foundthe winner=s circle without significant furtherdistinction, but the decision to send her to Officer whilehe still resided in Kentucky looks to be payingdividends. AOfficer gave a chance to do a real outcross,@explained Sloan. A[Emotional Storm] has Storm Cat andMr. Prospector in her pedigree, so we thought we=d trya true outcross. He=s got a great sprinter=s profile, andhopefully he can repeat today=s effort down the road.@ The fact that Cop A Tude was live on the tote didn=texactly come as a surprise to Sloan, who was on handfor the victory. AHe had been training very well; he had quite a fewbullets, but you never know what to make of that,@ hecommented, adding that Cop A Tude is High Five=sfirst-ever debut winner. AWe were certainly hopeful, buthe does have a bit of an attitude with that Storm Catblood, so we were cautiously optimistic that he=dhandle the race-day experience well. He passed a fewhorses, which is always encouraging on debut, but Igive all the credit to [trainer] Graham [Motion]. The 5 1/2 [furlongs] was a great debut distance.@ Sloan considers himself fortunate to have beenaffiliated with Motion since High Five=s beginnings backin 1999. AWe=ve known for quite a while what the world hasknown for only about a year,@ Sloan offered. AHe is amaster horseman.@

As for what=s next, no one is getting too far ahead ofthemselves, Sloan assures. AI thought he was green and professional in spots, and we=re just going to let Graham make the call,@ hestated. AHe has the patience of Jobe, and we=ll certainlyabide by his decisions.@--Alan Carasso

Retired Racehorse Trainer Challenge to Debut:Edited Press Release A group of sport horse and racing enthusiastsannounced this week creation of the Retired RacehorseTraining Project (RRTP), a charitable organization whosemission is to increase demand for Thoroughbredex-racehorses through public education and promotion. "We received our 501(c)3 status from the IRS lastspring, and have been working since then to build aninteractive web site that provides the tools to help usfulfill our mission," said the group's founder SteuartPittman, an event rider who operates Dodon Farm inMaryland. The web site includes a Trainer Directory ofprofessionals who work with ex-racehorses; a SourcesFor Horses listing of non-profit placement groups, farms, racetracks, and classifieds; and a Bloodline Bragwhere everyone can enter their ex-racehorse withpedigree, competition record, and assessment ofcharacteristics. It can be found online atwww.retiredracehorsetraining.org. "United States Equestrian Federation statistics showthat Thoroughbreds declined as a percentage of horsesregistered for national competitions from 41% in 1982to 10% in 2011," according to Pittman. "One cause ofthis trend has been a lack of effective education andmarketing about the attributes that these horses bringto the sport and recreation rider. Thirty years ago we allrevered retired racehorses because we all rode them.Today we have a new generation of riders who need tohear the good news." In addition to the Trainer Challenge, the RRTP plansclinics, symposia, online educational resources, and anApprenticeship Program for aspiring professionaltrainers who can demonstrate outstanding riding skills.
