GREAT QUOTE:

“Although the schools are embedded in our culture and reflect its values, the technological changes that have

swept through society at large have left the educational system largely unchanged. In the course

of 20 years, a dramatic rift has opened between the process of teaching and learning in the schools

and the ways of obtaining knowledge in society at large, a rift made obvious by the fact that the process of

teaching has not changed substantially, even in the past 100 years.”

1-One laptop per child: Grade 3 to Secondary 5 and Adult Education.

2-Each teacher, consultants, administrators, special education techs, commissioners.

3-Professional development designed and implemented by teachers, after initial deployment.

4-Reaction from the world of education: Overall, don’t talk about it. For others, considered imprudent and crazy!! From the government of Québec, the ETSB didn’t exist.

5-The planning before the laptop deployment happened: 20 months covering 209 items. This spring of 2020?

We have to remember that the education “system” really doesn’t like success when technology is involved and

especially in special education.

A quote from Bill Gates (2014)“I was naive, naive, naive. To create real change in your

success, you must deal with the obstacles first and not put solutions in front of them.”

He was referring to the Gates Foundation lack of success to deal with malaria and dengue fever.

BEFORE starting any new initiative that implies change, of whatever nature, conduct a S.W.O.T. Analysis.

If not, you will very likely commit the same classic mistakes that previous change initiatives have faced

and resulted in being unsuccessful.

S.W.O.T. AnalysisSo Ron, how about a couple of classic mistakes?

Mistake #1: “I assume…..”

I assume that my team is “ready”…

I assume that my team agrees with me…

I assume that the infrastructure is ready and capable…

I assume that the training of my team will be relevant, adapted and respond to their needs…

Page 25: Thursday-Friday June. 25-26, 2020 · 2020-06-26 · Presentation by Ron Canuel June 26, 2020. 3 This stress now seems rather insignificant, hmmm! 4 ... the process of teaching and

25

S.W.O.T. AnalysisMistake #2: “Only my team can create the best ideas and

strategies and solutions.”

The real sharing and usage of best practices in education is not very prevalent. The truth be told, other educators and

individuals can have better ideas, strategies and solutions than you!

And sometimes, not always, even your critics can have good ideas, if they are in good faith.

Early adaptors rarely convince colleagues. The key is to reduce the “distance” between early adaptors and the desired targeted majority. Hand holding.

Early adaptors usually represent about 16% of those who work in an organization.

Don’t believe that if you impress your colleagues that they will change. They won’t. Convince instead.

Achille’s heel: 5 essential points:

1. Governments are usually incapable of managing change successfully.

(The bureaucracy of education moves slower than a glacier.

Why change? Even during this pandemic?!?)

2. School Boards have created I.T. departments that are “stand-alone” and separate from other departments. No-No-NO-NOOOO!!!

(This is a major structural challenge to overcome. All I.T.

departments should answer directly to the Education and

Complimentary Services departments.

3- The professional development models offered to teachers. are, overall, very ineffective.

(Suggestion: Send workshop evaluation forms to teachers one month after the event.

4- Evaluation rubrics and certifications for students barely reflect any aspects related to creativity, team work, innovation, etc. Eg: 21st century global skills.

5- Current education systems place less importance on the creativity, team collaboration, innovation, risk-taking skills of teachers. Co-construction.

6-Finally, quality BEFORE quantity. Give me 15% of high quality usage over 85% of mediocre usage, anytime!!

7-Direct interaction with students is essential. Never only depend only on online or distance education.

8-Nature needs balance. Education needs it as well!!
