New exhibitions showcase artistic talentThree new exhibitions were opened at Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre on Saturday 11 June 2016.Three Women Went to China: Suzanne Archer, Hanna Kay & Sarah Tomasetti; Suburbs to the Sea: Charlotte Drake-Brockman & Fran Wachtel; Beyond the Limits: Selections from the Max Watters Collection.

All five exhibiting artists – Suzanne Archer, Charlotte Drake-Brockman, Hanna Kay, Sarah Tomasetti and Fran Wachtel were in attendance, along with in excess of fifty guests at last Saturday’s opening night event. A tear was shed as long-time collaborators Charlotte & Fran announced that their exhibition ‘Suburbs to the Sea’ would be their last joint venture. Guests found themselves immersed in the powerful reflective and responsive works of ‘Three Women Went to China’. Works by all five artists are available for purchase. Exhibitions continue on display until 24 July 2016.

Singleton on the riseSingleton’s economy is showing signs of significant recovery according to an assessment of economic data within the Singleton Local Government Area. The figures indicate a 4.2 per cent improvement in Singleton’s gross regional product. Three years ago Singleton’s gross regional product (total value of all the goods and services sold) stood at $5.5billion. By August 2015 that figure had dropped to $3.5billion with a significant amount of this due to the downturn in the mining industry. However, by April this year, the figure increased to $3.9 billion, with all key indicators forecasting continued improvement. The figures show improvement in almost every aspect of Singleton’s economy, except for the mining sector.

Address reviewUpper Hunter Shire Council is undertaking a review of road numbering and addresses across the Shire, at the request of NSW Land and Property Information. Having an adequate address assists Emergency Services in locating a property in an emergency.

Image: Upper Hunter Shire Council Mayor Wayne Bedggood delivering the new rural road number plate to the Studdy family of Ridgelands Road - Sasha, Tommi and Jimi.

A complete formal address is becoming increasingly important and is required for a wide range of applications including licencing, passports, notices of sale, utility connections, and swimming pool registrations.

Owners will be formally notified in writing where their property necessitates an amendment to their formal address. It is essential for all residents to display their allocated number in a prominent position near the entry to their property as required under Section 124 Local Government Act 1993. This will assist with postal deliveries and your property being located easily in the case of an emergency.

NAIDOC Week in SingletonSingleton will have the opportunity to celebrate its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and heritage during NAIDOC Week 2016. Singleton NAIDOC Planning Committee will kick off the activities on Saturday 2 July at the Singleton Civic Centre Green with a family event at 10am. NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians. Activities take place across the nation in the first week of July each year and all Australians are encouraged to participate. The whole community is invited to attend and to join in with the celebrations and activities on the day.

For more information on NAIDOC Week 2016 please contact Council’s Community Development Officer Reina Stalker at 02 6578 7216 or email [email protected]

SHIHAD [pictured above]: All set to explode on stage at Pigsty in July at Dashville, Lower Belford on 2nd July. Image courtesy of SSPR.

Kiwi rock juggernaut Shihad New Zealand rock powerhouse Shihad is set to headline Dashville’s Pigsty in July festival. Shihad have been rocking live audiences since 1988. General consensus amongst discerning rockers has long-cemented singer Jon Toogood as a frontman without peer, a coiled spring of volcanic energy.

The boys have promised a show full of classic tracks from their landmark The General Electric and self-titled (“the fi sh album”) records. You will not want to miss a PigSty performance that is likely to be whimsically discussed for many years to come.

Billed as the more-fi ery sister to Dashville’s Gum Ball, Pigsty in July is a boutique one-day over-18 licensed event where you delight in the best winter warmer food, booze and live music that Dashville is famous for.
