Tenors: Purpose: The tenor drums (also known as quads, quints, hexes, or sextets) act, along with the bassline, as a melodic section of the drumline. They act as the tenor voice of the drumline, hence the name. Our drums have five drums that are known as drums 1-4 and the shot drum (aka the spock or gock). The tenor section usually either splits up the snare book over the 5 drums or plays a melodic part similar to what the brass and woodwinds play. Technique: The technique to play tenors is identical to the snare player's right hand. Tenors play with matched grip, so both hands look the same. Never take your index, ring, or pinky fingers off of the stick. Unlike a snare player however, tenor players have an extra dimension to worry about. They must be able to move drum-to-drum seamlessly. The hands do not rotate outwards when playing on drums 3 and 4, the arms move to compensate. Also, do not move your shoulders while playing with a stand, this will help you when you move to a carrier.
The desirable sound from a tenor drum doesn't come out of the center of the head. The optimum playing zones are near the edges closest to you on each drum, with the exception of the spock. Your arms should move around the drums in an arc.
Thundercussion 2011 Technique
The 12 Golden Quad Rules
According to Bill Bachman
1. RELAX – don’t use any more muscles than necessary
2. Always maintain a strong fulcrum and relatively flat hands
3. When playing around the drums, play just as you would on one drum
4. Maintain both the “X” and “Y” axis – turn your wrists no matter where your
forearms are moving your hands.
5. Always play in the playing areas. They produce the best sound and are located
conveniently.
6. The mallet must always contact the head with its full velocity, especially when
playing low. Play through the drums!
7. Always play with proper mallet heights; ESPECIALLY when moving around the
drums.
8. Hands not playing should be at rest in the set position over a playing area in
order for one to look confident and professional.
9. Shoulders DON’T move – quad stands will tempt you.
10. PRACTICE WITH A METRONOME or music with steady time.
11. Don’t practice “Above your head”. Take one step at a time (especially with
tempos).
12. Chops are the key to playing great; burning muscle pain is your friend.
Practice Tips: Get a pad. The Remo pads work fine but if you can, get a better one. If you want
advice on selecting a pad, talk to us. We are the practice pad gurus. Always work with a metronome. If you don't have one, use the internet to find
one. Practice at varying tempos. Try to play the exercises on a pillow. A pillow offers little-to-no rebound and can
help you build the strength in your arms (chops). If possible, practice standing up with a pad on a table or stand. Practicing in a mirror or with a video camera can help immensely. Practice means nothing if you practice incorrectly. Don't bother working on crazy
solos until you master the basics.
Stick Height Chart
This chart provides guidelines for relating stick heights to dynamic markings indicated throughout parts. Although the stick height may be changed in various playing situations, this chart provides a constant frame of reference and is considered default.

The first time through play as written ant 4 inches frorn the wrist.Second time play the check at l6 inches and put an accent on the first note of each sticking change. Rr Ll Rr Ll kr Lll. . ..
The accent is played by articulating at the wrist and lifting the forearm. There will be a pocket behind the stick as the stick comes up past 12" thenthe pocket closes as the stick comes closer to the head in order to stop the rebound ofthe stick.Do not squeeze the front fulcrum.
Third time play the check at I 6" and put an accent on the last note of each sticking change. rR lL rR lL rrR lll, rrrR llll- . .. .
Fouth time play all at 16" from the wrist with tinger opening at the 12" point to allow relaxed playing.Do not play higher than 16" and do not play fast than 90bpm. this is a warm up not a chops builder. RELAX RELAX let your wrist bounce and flow.Use a IVIet and mark time.
p.s. It is good to eat food before you come to band camp.
