President’s Message

April is turning out to be an unusually busy month for the GGC. Our much anticipated Spring Plant Sale is coming up on April 13th. Thanks to those members who have promoted the sale via yard signs, social media or passed out the beautiful “Color Your World with Plants” flyers. For the first time that I can remember, the GGC has a banner stretching across Main Street, downtown Grapevine, promoting the Plant Sale. Thank you to the Parks & Recreation Dept for creating the banner. Thank you too, to all of the GGC members who have signed up to work during the plant sale. It will be a fun day for all of us.

On the same day of the plant sale in Grapevine, Flowercade is under way at the Fort Worth Botanical Garden. Please refer to the Calendar in your Newsletter and on the Website for all the April activities and sign up information.

And most exciting for the club was the announcement at the District II Spring Convention last month that our Grapevine Garden Club is “District II Garden Club of the Year.” Congratulations to the committees whose contributions brought Fourteen First Place and Two Second Place awards to our garden club. We appreciate all the volunteering of our members that support our many community events, grants, scholarships and our organization. We are “Garden Club of the Year” because of all of you!

Gardeners On The Go

It’s time to plan our 2019-20 day trips! Planning our excursions is double the fun because you get to decide where we go and what we’ll do. Members have contributed many suggestions so you do not need to have a specific destination in mind right now. You are welcome to use one of those ideas or get adventurous with your own. Email or text me, Liz Lovett, which month you are interested in hosting. You can volunteer with a friend and share the joy in planning. My contact information is on page A-44 in our garden club’s yearbook.

GGC Forum This year for the first time the Grapevine Garden Club will be offering a Forum at its April 23rd general meeting at the Grapevine Convention Center. The purpose of the Forum is for participants to share ideas and expertise with other members and guests. When you enter the door for the meeting, you will encounter a Greeter who will ask you to select a colored slip of paper matching one of the five topics we will be discussing. Discussion Topics: Augmenting bird feeders: Native plants to provide food (seeds/nectar) for birds on

a year-round basis. Participants may wish to bring scientific names of plants—if possible—and specify if a plant is best for seeds, nectar or both.

Shade gardening: Participants may wish to suggest plants that do well in shade/partial shade and include scientific names, if possible.

Travel destinations for gardens and/or wildlife: Participants may wish to bring names of travel companies that specialize in planning visits to gardening/wildlife destinations.

Improving soils for successful gardening: Participants may wish to suggest products/techniques they have found to be effective.

Summer gardening in Texas heat: Participants may wish to suggest plants/techniques that are successful in this challenging time of year.

The business meeting will be held first. Participants will sit at the table they selected for the business meeting and the first discussion session only. After the Business Meeting, the Program Chair will set the timer for 15 minutes. When the timer goes off, participants will leave the topic they have just discussed and go to another area of the room to discuss a different topic. The timer will be set again for 15 minutes and the discussion will begin again. This will happen a total of three times.

Please be ready to share your great ideas

GGC Dues

Our “Garden Club” year is coming to an end in May. We ask that your dues for next year be paid by June 1 so that the yearbook can be printed over the summer in time for the September meeting. Dues are staying the same: $30 for an individual and $35 for a family. This allows you to go on all the trips and tours and participate in as many activities as you can handle. For our new members, May 21, which is a luncheon, will be our last meeting until September. Then in September you simply sign in and pick up your new yearbook. Easy peasy! If you wait until September to renew, your picture won't be in the yearbook until we do an addendum which is December or January. You can pay by check, cash or credit card. And, of course, we want all of you to join again next year!

Gardeners on the Go

Fort Worth Japanese Garden

Our trip to visit the Fort Worth Japanese Garden is on Thursday, April 25. It should be beautiful that time of year. We will meet at the parking lot at Harwood and 121 (by the McDonalds) around 9:15 and carpool to the garden. Our tour is scheduled for 10:00. Admission is $8.00 unless you belong to the the Dallas Arboretum or the Fort Worth Garden, then it's free (Be sure to bring your membership card). After that, we'll go to Uncle Julio's in Fort Worth and have lunch. They are willing to seat us in the same area and do separate checks. Right around the corner from Uncle Julio's is Archie's Gardenland. If you've never been to Archie’s, it's a wonderful nursery that's been there for over 80 years. We have 17 people signed up now, so we still have room for a few more (our max is 30). This will be an inexpensive trip (unless you're like me and HAVE to buy plants!) and will be a lot of fun.

Daylily Farm

Please save the date June 6,2019, as we will be celebrating National Garden Week with a trip to Celina TX. This will be a carpool trip and limited to 20-25 members. We will be visiting 2 family run businesses. On the agenda will be a visit to 3 Creek Gardens, a Daylily business. The owner says he has every color but blue, lots of varieties. Of course we will want to buy his beautiful Daylilies. Then we will go to Eden Hill Vineyard and Winery. Have a guided tour there and have lunch. A picnic box lunch will be provided for all who attend and pay. Carole and I will have sign up sheets and more information at the April meetings. Price of the trip will be determined by how many we get to sign up. So please sign up quickly. We hope you can join us for a fun trip to Celina June 6th. Flowercade 2019: Food for Thought

The theme this year is “Food for Thought.”

Flowercade show dates are Saturday, April 13th

9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, April

14th 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 at the Fort Worth Botanic

Gardens, Fort Worth. It’s free and open to the

public.

Submit your flowers and plants, then come and enjoy the flower show! Horticulture specimen prep day is Friday, April 12th 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Joan Stewart’s greenhouse (Yearbook, A-73 ). We will meet to

prepare flowers, herbs, branches and plants for show judging on Saturday. Photography ( exhibition only ) deadline is April 11th. Market Day is Saturday , April 13th 9:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. Come enjoy all the different horticulture specimens , design setting,

WEST TEXAS STREET WORK DAY

Tuesday, April 30th at 9 a.m.

Hi Everybody—

It’s spring time and we’re ready to plant on West Texas Street. As you can see our next work

day is Tuesday, April 30th . I think if we start at 9 a.m. we might be able to make it to Jake’s

for breakfast OR lunch. Hopefully we’ll be able to use a few plants from the Plant Sale to fill

in some spots, which is always fun.

We will need to do a little cleanup, as usual, before we plant our pretty annual color, and

then we can spread a little mulch for a top dressing. Bring the tools you will need to

accomplish this work and we’ll have water to keep everybody hydrated.

If you haven’t signed up yet, you can do that on line or we will have our signup sheet at the

April 23rd meeting. Look forward to seeing you there. For new folks, this is a great way to

get to know folks in the club – we’re a large club and it is good to sign-up and join in because

you get to know people and learn and/or share right along with us.

District II Garden Club of the Year

GGC won Garden Club of the Year for District II for 2018, our third time in five years.

We applied for 17 awards at the district level and won 14 First Place, 2 Second Place

and one Citation which is the highest award given in that category. Most of these

awards went on to state judging and we should know the results of that soon.
