Tips on parental response

As a parent, it’s a natural response to become upset when you first hear your child is being picked on. You want nothing more than to take the situation into your own hands. The first thing to do is try and stay calm. At this point, your job is to collect as much information as possible from your child about what’s going on when someone is verbally being mean. Allow them to tell their story in their own words. Do not rush in demanding to see the bully’s parents. It may be the very response your child was dreading. Children are often scared of revenge from bullies and if you take care of these issues for your child, it might cause the bullying to happen more. Also do not respond by dismissing their experience as part of “growing up”. You may suspect that your child is being bullied, but too afraid to say anything. Is there a way of raising the subject? Suggest that your child keep a diary of bullying incidents, so they have concrete facts if ever necessary.

Be there for your child to listen to, guide, and help build skills of assertiveness. Resilience is important to permanently bully-proof your child. These skills do not appear overnight. This is a long term plan your children can practice and use for the rest of their lives in order to handle conflict effectively.

Table Talk Newsletter #8

What fraction of the square above has been shaded in?

If it is not immediately obvious, maybe you can estimate a fraction that would be too low? Too high? The

image is created by simply slicing the large square with straight lines, and invites us to think about how the

various sections gain their value.

This image comes from the website called Fraction Talks, orwww.fractiontalks.com, where many other

similar images can be found with a variety of designs. The site is curated by Nat Banting, and the goal is to

encourage students to interrogate, communicate, and deepen their understanding of fractions.

Tips to use Fraction Talks at home

• Allow your children to take the first steps—let them reason.

• If your children want to create new possibilities, let them. Altering the diagram is a sense-making

activity.

• Highlight familiar sections when they come up (like halves, thirds, quarters, eighths, etc.)

• Allow them to justify with written and spoken language as well as pictures. Notation comes from

these—don’t rush it.

• A question like, “How many other ways can you shade…” opens up lots of space for thinking.

Hopefully this week's Table Talk Math has your dinner table sharing ways in which math can serve a

conversation. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us on Twitter (@TableTalkMath). Thank

you for taking the time to improve math fluency for children, one table talk conversation at a time. For

previous newsletters, check out the archive each week. The entirety of this week's content was produced by

Nat. Reach out to him on Twitter with your ideas at @NatBanting.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

We have been noticing a few students (less than 5) with the diagnosis of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. This disease is a common viral illness found primarily in infants, children and adolescents.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by viruses that belong to the enterovirus group.

This disease is spread from person-to-person by direct contact with nose and throat discharges, saliva, or fluid from blisters. Everyone is at risk of infection, but not everyone who is infected becomes ill.

Symptoms include fever, sores in the mouth, and a rash with blisters. The usual period from the time of exposure to onset of symptoms is 3-7 days. Fever is often the first symptom. Other symptoms you may see are “just not feeling well”, poor appetite, sore throat.

One to two days after fever onset, you most likely will see painful sores developing in the mouth. The sores begin as small red spots that blister and then often become larger; they are usually located on the tongue, gums, and inside of the cheeks. A skin rash will most likely develop over 1-2 days with flat or raised red spots, some with blisters. The rash does not itch, and it is usually located on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. It may also appear on the buttocks. A person with hand, foot and mouth disease may have only the rash or the mouth sores.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is moderately contagious; a person is most contagious during the first week of the illness. An infected person should cover his/her mouth and nose when coughing/sneezing and tissues should be used whenever possible; soiled tissues should be properly disposed. This disease is not transmitted to or from pets or other animals. The virus can remain in the body for weeks after a person’s symptoms have gone away, meaning that they can still pass the infection on to others even though they appear well.

Prevention includes frequent hand washing with warm soapy water especially before eating and food preparation and after diaper changing, and disinfecting contaminated surfaces. Avoiding close contact (kissing, hugging, sharing utensils, etc.) with infected people may also help reduce the risk of infection.

There is no treatment available for this infection. Treating the symptoms is all that is recommended. Fluid intake is important to prevent dehydration.

Tech Talk….

The Upside of Social Media

So much time is spent making sure our kids know how to use technology and the internet safely as well as protecting their privacy that it is easy to forget that there can be some really great things that are out there for our kids. Social media can be one of those helpful tools. Too often social media is regarded as a time sucker or a place for cyberbullying, but social media platforms also have a lot of positive things to offer our kids -- and they do seek out those positive things! One of the most comprehensive sites about technology safety and cyberbullying, Cyberbullying Research Center, has put together a concise post about how social media can be used to help kids deal with anxiety and depression. Take a look at their summary here.

***PTO NEWS ***

Mark your calendars! Our next PTO Meeting is October 1 3th at Galloway School.

We are well under way collecting Box Tops and hope we can surpass last year’s earnings of $3,145.60. This year our goal is to raise at least $5,000 in FREE MONEY and we believe this goal can be reached with the help of our amazing students and teachers. If we have 100% participation with every student bringing in 50 box tops (filling out 2 collection sheets or 2 Ziploc bags of 25) this could possibly earn us over $6,000. Box Tops are each worth 10¢ and they quickly add up to real cash for our schools. It’s also an easy way to get friends and family involved in making a difference. All you have to do is:

1. Clip UNEXPIRED Box Tops

2. Paste or tape them to a collection sheet (collection sheets can be obtained at ALLschools) OR place them in a Ziploc bag, and

3. Submit them to your teacher with your name, grade, and teacher's name

Your name will automatically be entered into the PTO’s Box Tops November Raffle.

Every collections sheet or Ziploc bag of 25= 1 raffle entry. There is no limit as to how many times you can enter, so enter often!!! Thank you for your continuous support from the Channahon PTO

OUR DRUG-FREE PLEDGE

The faculty and staff at Three Rivers School are committed to promoting the safety and well-being of our students through our ongoing anti-drug efforts. We believe that we are blessed with some great students and an outstanding community, however, the impact of drug abuse can be felt in all areas. Students are aware that the possession, distribution, or use of drugs at school or any school related function is absolutely prohibited. The school reserves the right to search school property and equipment owned or controlled by the school (such as lockers, desks and parking lots). Although we believe that our students make good choices in regards to drug usage, we also believe in being diligent in the deterrence of any and all drug abuse. We also intend to allow local law enforcement to conduct drug-dog searches to help ensure a safe and drug-free environment at least once every school year
