Om Namo Venkatesaya
Srinivas (Venkateswara) Suprabhatam
Kousalya supraja rama poorva sandhya pravarthate
Utthista nara shardula kartavyam daivamahnikam
Ghanta Mantapam is the heart of Sri Venkateswara Temple, located on thehill, Venkatadri, one of the seven hills of Tirumala, a popular pilgrimage center tomillions of devotees. For the past several hundreds of years dating back to 14th
century, there exists a tradition of singing the song to wake up Lord Venkateswara,
over at this Ghanta Mantapam. It is known to all of us and practiced by millions ofdevotees all around the world. As all of you might have guessed by now, it iscalled SRI VENKATESWARA SUPRABHATAM.
Early in the morning around 3 AM, Vaishnava priests sing the song of
Suprabhatam to provide the wake up call to Lord Venkateswara. Serenity blendedwith peaceful environment is the norm here. The sacred hills of Tirumala echo andreverberate the melody filled with devotion. It is believed that the ashtadikpalakas, nava grahas and three crore devatas sing this with lot of reverencewhile being invisible to the ordinary devotees, who are assembled in Ghanta
Mantapam. Sri Venkateswara wakes up with a smile and glances the 14 lokas. Onecan only imagine how sweet is that glance. When the elegantly eloquent, thousandtongued Adiseshu cannot describe the qualities of the grace with which the Lordlooks at the fourteen lokas, it is better for the humans not to attempt anydescription. It is extremely important and interesting to know how this song came
into existence and who penned the lyrics of this song.
The devotee who was granted the great privilege by Srinivasa and earnedhis grace in the form of knowledge and eloquence is Sri Prativadi BhayankarAnnan. He was born at an auspicious time to the couple Anantacharyulu and Andal
at Kanchipuram in the year 1361 AD. Annans family was very traditional. Theywere descendents of a person Mudumubai Nambi who was one of the 74 headsappointed by Sri Ramanujacharya. The name given by his parents at birth wasHastiGiriNathar Annan. He gained expertise in all shastras at a very young age. Helearned the details of shastras from a great scholar Acharya Nayana
Varadacharyulu who was the son of Sri VenkataDesikulu.
One day he defeated a scholar named Narasimha Mishra who came from
North India in a debate by the virtue of his expertise. Varadacharya, who was verydelighted with this outcome, awarded him the title Prativadi Bhayankar. From thatday onwards he was known by this name. After some time, Annan joined as astudent to Acharya Varavara muni who was the main Jeeyar of Srirangam. One dayAcharya along with his students reached Tirumala to have darshan of Sri
Venkateswara. While he had darshan of the Lord along with his favorite studentAnnan, He observed certain deficiencies such as lack of Suprabhatam or MangalaSasanam. He immediately asked his favorite student Annan to pen lyrics ofSuprabhatam. Taking that as a direct request from the Lord himself, Annan wroteand sang Suprabhatam, Stotram, Prapatti and Mangala Sasanam immediately at
that moment. His teacher, the priests of the temple, and the devotees assembledwere delighted and spellbound hearing such beautiful rendition using honey likewords.
Acharya Varavara muni ordered the temple priests to sing Annans lyrics
every day in the early hours of every morning. Starting from that day the samelyrics are being sung to Srinivasa. He thus achieved the purpose of his birth and hisname entered history books. The 1st sloka in Suprabhatam is said to be obtainedfrom Ramayana where as the 9th, 10th and 13th slokas were obtained fromMarkandeya Puranam.
Annan who wrote the lyrics of the Suprabhatam that are used as a wakeupcall to the Lord of the universe is blessed.
After a while upon Acharyas direction, the same Suprabhatam has been
propagated to 108 Sri Vaishnava kshetras. After the demise of Varavara muni,Annan spent the rest of his life in Kanchi and Tirumala. He passed away at a ripeage of 93 in the year 1454 AD and attained Moksha.
The Suprabhatam, Stotram, Prapatti and Mangala Sasanam written by
Annan are heard even today in the hills of Tirumala in the early hours of themorning. The whole world wakes up hearing the Suprabhatam of the protector ofthe worlds. The smiles of Srinivasa give the feeling of protection shields to theentire universe. This is the story of Suprabhatam. This is the wakeup call loved bySrinivasa. These are the Mangala sasanas.
