BAPTISM OF THE LORD PAGE 1 JANUARY 13, 2019 Continued on page 2 Thoughts from Fr. Scott Today, we celebrate the great event of the Baptism of the Lord. This celebration marks the official end of the Christmas season. The baptism of the Lord is an enlightening event awaking in us a desire to serve and be with God. The Baptism of Jesus is the Fathers’ official notification to the world that Jesus is indeed His Son in whom He is well pleased. This event is a clear definition demonstrating that Jesus has a right to work on behalf of the Father for the salvation of mankind. This appointment is for life, both here and here after, if you will. No person can ever strip Jesus of the marvelous work of ministry in this fallen world. This celebration is a day filled with rich imagery and numerous points for reflection. Most importantly, the Baptism of the Lord helps us recall what happened at our own baptism. Our baptisms are more than an occasion for a family get together or a party. Indeed, any baptism is a “claiming of a soul” and a consecrating for ministry. By virtue of our baptism we are welcomed into the loving arms of the Father and sent to do His work in the world. This means we have a great deal of important work to accomplish once we receive and accept the mission to go forth. This claiming, or commissioning, happened to Jesus and is passed on to us through our baptism in the Trinity. We ought to learn our lesson and work diligently for the coming of Christ in the world by helping one another prepare for the life to come. This feast also reminds us that we are called to serve by virtue of our own Baptism in Christ. All of us have a vocation in Christ, we simply need to recognize what our particular vocation is and live it to the full. Therefore, we should take some time to reflect upon our vocations and ask the Lord’s help to fulfill it joyfully. As many of you know, my first year as Pastor here at Lakes was not an easy transition for me personally. Getting to know you, my new community, was easy and the most enjoyable part. You are a wonderful family and very gracious indeed. Still, some things made last year difficult, and centered around being a greater distance away from my family and friends while adjusting to new surroundings. Another adjustment leaving me unsettled has been the rectory living situation. It is a nice house but off property and leaves us feeling detached from parish life at times. I am very accustomed to living on the property where I am called to serve. So, last year I asked the Archbishop if he would allow us priests to move back to the original rectory, the red brick home adjacent to the school and across the drive from the Church. I did this after seeking counsel from my associate pastor, the staff, the parish finance and pastoral councils, a number of active parishioners and some priests who lived here previously. There was and is general agreement on the issue; namely your priests should move back to the original rectory. I am happy to report the Archbishop agreed and gave us his permission to undertake this project. The renovations started last week. The plan, to renovate the rectory and sell the home on Cambrook where we currently live. The original rectory is a solidly built home, but needs to be updated. Part of the renovations call for a small addition and a new garage. Last week, the old garage was torn down, it was in poor condition, and the footings were poured for the new addition that will connect the garage to the house. We need to fix the roof, update the plumbing and electrical, install a new furnace as the original heating system was aging out, and renovate the main floor of the house. This will give us enough room to house two priests permanently and provide a guest room for visiting priests and/or seminarians should the need arise. Currently, we do not have space for a visiting priest or the ability to house a seminarian for a pastoral year. The money from the sale of the Cambrook home will pay for most of the renovations and a small loan from the Archdiocese will help to finance the remainder of the cost. A plan is in place to repay the loan without incurring long term debt. So,

Thoughts from Fr.

EUCHARISTIC

ADORATION There is a wonderful movement going on within our Catholic Church all over the world. The Eucharistic reign of Jesus is

coming about with churches opening up for Adoration and many parishioners are coming to bring their troubles, worries, fears and anxieties to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. As He said—”Come and bring your burdens to Me and I will refresh you.”

We need your commitment to spend a specific hour

each 3rd Tuesday in Adoration. Suggested times are 10:00

-11:00, 10:30-11:30, 11:00-12:00, 11:30-12:30, 12:00 to

Adoration time in the space below, cut it out and put it in an

envelope marked “3rd Tuesday Adoration” and drop it in

the collection basket as soon as possible.

Please join us Tuesday, January 15th, following the

8:15am Mass when there will be exposition of the Blessed

Sacrament and continuing until 7:00pm when there will be

a rosary and benediction.

please pray all will go smoothly and we will be able to move as soon as possible. My stress level will thank you in advance for your gracious support and prayers.

Now that the Christmas season is over, we can move back into a normal pace of life. This transition is difficult for some and a welcomed relief to others. Hopefully, all of us will remember to pray for one another in our parish family. Many people find the winter months lonely and are in great need of our prayers and support. So, please make an effort to pray daily for the whole parish family and most especially those who served our community so joyfully in the past.

God Bless and have a great week! Fr. Scott

Thought for the week: At our baptism we were claimed by The Father and anointed for service. Do we respond

generously to this call and serve joyfully with grateful hearts?

This weekend we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord; Jesus’ baptism by John in the Jordan. This is a significant moment in Christ's public ministry and a turning point for all of us Christians as well. Each year we celebrate significant dates in our lives, birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. These dates signify important moments in our lives. There is another important moment in our lives that we should celebrate as well, the day of our baptism. Each year we celebrate Christ’s baptism and we should also celebrate our Baptism. Our baptism, marks the day in which we were forgiven of original sin, the day in which we were claimed for Christ by Christ and brought into his fold as beloved sons and daughters of Christ. It is a really important day in our spiritual lives.

How many of us know the date of our Baptism? The anniversary of my baptism is January 3. A few years back I found a video recording of my baptism and each year on the anniversary I watch my baptism. I would like to encourage everyone to look up the date of your baptism and celebrate it each year. Look for your baptismal certificate, baptismal candle, baptismal gown, pictures, and video and display them in your room or house. Look at the pictures or video each year on your anniversary and thank God for the great gifts we received in our Baptism.

TEACHING OPPORTUNITY

What can I do to help change the world?" One thing you can do is help children to know and love the Lord. We are in need of a Sunday School teacher during our Sunday 9:30am Mass. You do not need a degree in Theology to help them learn about God. All you need is to share your love for God. Please call the Religious Education office for more information at 248-623-0291.

If you have a better name for Fr. Christopher’s column please email him at [email protected].

MUSIC MINISTRY

I was second oldest of five kids. When we all got in the family Ford station wagon, there was an algorithm of rules about seating. Danny and Carolyn can’t sit together because they’ll argue. The way-back was out for Raymond because his legs are too long and Timmy gets car sick back there. So that meant Laura was always in the way-back with either Danny and Carolyn.

Sometimes on the way home, when everyone was a little worn out, we would sing to pass the time. When I hear I’ve Been Working on the Railroad, I’ve Got Sixpence, or Row Your Boat, I remember those family station wagon rides. When we sang, it was never about the music or the quality of singing. The music acted as a means to unify us in a common purpose and also bind that experience to our long-term memory as a family experience. Just like a Silent Night brings back Christmas memories, those tunes bring me back to the middle seat of the Ford wagon sharing a seatbelt with either Danny or Carolyn. (I also remember heated discussions about who gets the window seat.)

When we gather together and worship, the music is not the end goal; rather it is a means to the end of unifying our hearts and raising our voices to God in many contexts, such as praise, adoration, petition, lament, contemplation… Those experiences are then bound to our long-term memory.

Are you getting the full experience of this ride? Strap in and join your voice to the song. Whatever the tune is, it’s just another means of unifying our minds and hearts to God.

Peace, Tim Smith

ENVELOPE #_____________

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

In today’s Scripture readings, Isaiah foretells the preaching of Jesus’ cousin, John the Baptist. In the Gospel from the evangelist St. Luke, John professes: I am baptizing you with water … He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. In a spirit of evangelization, let us draw closer to the Lord in discipleship, invoking the Holy Spirit to enkindle a fire in our hearts. May this fire move us forward as faithful stewards to carry out our baptismal promises to cast off evil and be committed to His Word, to love and serve God and our neighbor, and to spread the Gospel message of the Good News to everyone we encounter. We can begin to evangelize — or reevangelize — family members and friends by simply inviting them to an evangelization program offered in the parish, like Alpha or ChristLife.

NEW BIBLE STUDY

There is a new Bible study beginning Friday, January 18th after the 8:15am Mass.

Is the Gospel of Mark only a “condensed” version of the life of Christ? What does it have to offer us that the Gospels of Matthew, Luke, and John do not? Join Dr. Tim Gray in this powerful fourteen-part series to discover the Gospel of Mark like never before. Immerse yourself in this action-packed Gospel that offers Saint Peter’s account of Christ’s life and teaching.

Delve deep into the theme of the “way” and true discipleship and see how Jesus reveals his identity in authoritative action and word. Consider more deeply Jesus’s teaching on the Temple and walk with Jesus to Gethsemane and the Way of the Cross as Mark describes it. Open yourself to profound reflection on the shortest of the four gospels. Combining the insights of Dr. Tim Gray with the masterful artistry of the Augustine Institute, this Lectio series uses the Church’s rich tradition of lectio divina to help you better understand and better pray with the Gospel of Mark.

Questions? Please call Margo at 248-568-9946.

TUITION ANGELS

We are looking for “Tuition Angels” for the 2018-2019 school year. As we all know, the economic situation in our community has been difficult for many of our school families. We have families who

currently send their children to Our Lady of the Lakes School, and make financial sacrifices to continue to do so, but need a helping hand. Can you help? Would you consider being a “Tuition Angel” this year? If so, please send your donation to the Parish Office or place it in the collection basket marked “Tuition Angels.” Any amount would be greatly appreciated!
