Thoughts from Deacon Paul Frequently, during Lent, I refer to doing something good rather than to only “give up” something. Here’s an idea. Take a while to be thankful. It’s a simple idea but, as we listen to the news we realize why. We hear of tornados, floods, blizzards, robberies, shootings, unemployment—the list doesn’t quit. While summer traffic might occasionally be annoying, we don’t live where we have bumper-to-bumper traffic every day just getting to work. For the most part, we at least know who our neighbor is and many of us can look out a window and catch part of a sunrise or sunset. When I want to walk for exercise, I can go a short way down the road and be in the state park. When doing an errand shopping it’s not unusual to see people I know and have a brief conversation. That doesn’t happen in other places. Looking out the window it isn’t unusual seeing a deer tapping its nose on the bird feeder to knock out some sunflower seeds. Going to Mass on the weekend, there are many friends to greet. Some might have a job that is not always upbeat or satisfying, or suffer with sickness, or hear constant complainingwe can still be thankful we have a job and many freedoms. That includes being able to talk to God or read His word. These are simple things, but things I am thankful to have in my life. Thoughts from Deacon Paul

Frequently, during Lent, I refer to doing something good rather than to only “give up” something.

Some might have a job that is not always upbeat or satisfying, or suffer with sickness, or hear constant complaining—we can still be thankful we have a job and many freedoms. That includes being able to talk to God or read His word.

These are simple things, but things I am thankful to have in my life.
