Momina Mateen
This is the Book in which there is no doubt.
It is a guide for those who are God conscious Those who believe
In the unseen And they establish Salah And they spend in charity out of what
We have provided for their sustenance.
And those who believe in this revelation which is sent
To you And the revelations that were sent before you.
In the hereafter
Al-‐Huda Juz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 1-‐5
Momina Mateen
Hadith: Shaytan flees from the house in which this Surah is read or recited.
The Prophet said Read the Quran because it will intercede on the behalf of the people on the Day of Resurrection. Read the 2 lights.
1-‐ Al Baqarah 2-‐ A’le Imran
This is because they will come in the shape of 2 clouds. Two lines of birds on the day of resurrection. They will argue on the behalf of their people on that day.
The Prophet said: Make a habit of reading Surah Baqarah for reading it brings down the Baraqah (blessings of Allah) on you and Neglecting it is a matter of regret and a misfortune. And men of falsehood cannot overcome it.
Surah Baqarah is a Madani Surah (it was revealed in Medina). It comprises of 286 Ayahs and 40 Rukus.
Word Analysis is described in the PowerPoint.
Summary of these Ayahs:
Ayah 1: . We don’t know the meaning of these letters. Their meaning has not been told to us but we are informed about its reward.
They firmly believe. They are on true guidance
From their Rabb And they are the ones who will attain salvation
Al-‐Huda Juz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 1-‐5
Momina Mateen Hadith: the Prophet said that the reward for reading the Quran is that when we read one hark (letter)
you get 10 reward. will get you 10 rewards. will get you 10 rewards. will get you 10 rewards. Summing up to 30 rewards.
Ayah 2:
-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐ > This book. If you notice earlier it was said to be that book (in the PowerPoint). But that means something that is a distance away from us. And we know that the book is referred to the Quran which is present before us. So why is it said as that?
1. In Arabic is used for respect or to honor. This book is a great honor, so for its introduction
is used. 2. That book that is in front of us. From the Allah it came to the Prophets heart and then in a book
form to us.
There is no doubt in it. Every word in it is true. Why was it sent? For what purpose?
Allah says . It was sent to show the path. For who was it sent?
, the God fearing. What is Taqwa? To have Allah’s fear in the heart and to be conscious of Allah. This kind of person has a heart which is inclined towards Allah. This person is not heedless, he is not careless, and he thinks about Akhira, he knows he will go back to Allah. To such a person this book
shows the path. متقي literally means to fear. In Islam it signifies fearing Allah and refraining from the transgression of his command. What are the qualities of such a person?
1. -‐-‐ They believe in the unseen through messengers and Prophets. For
example Allah, angels, the day of Judgement, paradise, hell and many others. refers to
things that are not known to men in an evident manner. The متقي people believe in all these unseen things.
2. -‐-‐ They believe in such a way that they prostrate to Allah. They establish Salah. They are steadfast in prayer. Not only do they prostrate but they are generous and kind to Allah’s creation, they take care of Allah’s slaves. Whatever Allah has given them they share.
3. -‐-‐ they spend in charity out of what We have provided for their sustenance. ررززقق means all the blessings of Allah. They are the ones who care and give.
Al-‐Huda Juz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 1-‐5
Momina Mateen
4. -‐-‐ they believe all that was revealed on the Prophet (SAW) – be it the Quran or Hadith
5. -‐-‐ And what was revealed before the Prophet (SAW) such as the things that were revealed the previous Prophets, the previous scriptures.
6. They worry about their end result. Why? -‐-‐ and they believe in the Akhira ( hereafter) with certainity. They are serious about all the worldly decisions they make. Their mind is Akhira oriented. They live life in such a manner that they live in this world while keeping
the Akhira infront of them. What is their way? -‐-‐ they are upon guidance from their Rabb. They are the guided ones and their end result will be
-‐-‐ they will be the successful ones.
In the beginning of the Quran we show gratitude and thankfulness to Allah by saying and
. In order to be grateful to Allah we should do Ibadah in the way that Allah likes. In what
way can this be done? . So now you did a dua for guidance. Allah has done
preparation to show you this way. Allah said if you’re seeking guidance , take this book. Which book? How can we recognize this book? It shall give you guidance. How will we know if it gives us
guidance? -‐-‐ There is no doubt in it.
If one seeks to gain benefit from something it is essential that it is doubt free. Doubt is such a thing that can break very close relations. For example husband and wife, if there is any doubt between the two will they be able to maintain their relationship? They will not trust each other. If one is in doubt they
become restless. Their life is not at ease. By saying a door of peace is already open for them. They are content. They will then begin to trust it and begin to recognize the benefits it has for the
person. What is the purpose of sending this book? , for guidance. What is guidance?
1. To show the path 2. To make one walk on a path 3. To make one reach the destination
This book will show the path to those have a close relationship with it (reading it, understanding it, pondering upon it). This book will also then give the person the strength to walk on that path. The work you are initially unable to will become easier after understanding this book. You will get the support and courage to do it. It makes you walk on the straight path. Not only does it make you walk on the straight path but, if you hold it tightly till death, it will make you reach the right destination. Not everyone is able to gain benefits from this book. This just emphasizes the fact that only reading this book is not enough. You cannot gain guidance by only reading. So guidance has a condition.
Al-‐Huda Juz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 1-‐5
Momina Mateen For example you go to a store and you find something that you really need. It is very beneficial to you. As you begin to reach out for it the shopkeepers comes and says that if you want that thing there is a condition. The condition is that you must bring the specified amount of money. Then you say that you do not have any money so the shopkeeper will say that you cannot have that thing. So you just stand there and look it. Will you gain any benefit from it just by looking at it?
Similarly just by looking at the Quran or by just reading it or reading its translation, you will not gain its full benefit. So how will you gain its full benefit or who can gain its full benefit? A person who has Taqwa in them will be able to. What is Taqwa? To safeguard self. To be cautious. To be safe. From what?
From displeasing Allah. متقي is a serious person. He is careful, conscious, and heedful. So Taqwa means
the urge. So a person who has an urge and he worries. -‐-‐ It is guidance for the متقي people. Those people who strive and put an effort, who look for the straight path. His first sign will be
.
The first condition for guidance is Imaan—faith in the unseen. If you have this faith you can gain benefits from this book. Otherwise you will continually say “prove it!” You will say “We have never seen Angel Gibreel or the Prophet.” Which kinds of people say such things? The people who don’t have this urge to gain guidance. People who have this urge will want to go to their creator and anyone who can guide them, they will believe. They offer Salah.
What is Salah?
It is the highest or most exalted degree of showing humbleness, being submissive. One puts the topmost part of their body (the head and nose) to the floor. Implying that in front of Allah I (or anyone) is a small or inferior thing. What else do such people (one who have urge) do?
-‐-‐ They are generous to Allah’s creation. They spend in charity from what we have provided for their sustenance. They do not live for themselves and they are not self centered. They are not self conceited people nor are they selfish. They live for others. Those who spend on
others—this book guides such people. What is Imaan bilghaib ( ) ?
It means to be Allah’s slave. To be submissive.
What is ?
This is when a person shows physically – bend or prostrate—in order to show submission.
Al-‐Huda Juz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 1-‐5
Momina Mateen
What is ?
To come out of selfishness and feel the pain of others. Such people want to spend on others. After this stage of love for others comes the stage of obedience.
And they believe whatever was sent down to you. In this “you” is referring to the Prophet (SAW). Whether we like it or not, we believe it. The people who are able to do this, they are the ones who have
a big heart. And they believe in the revelations that were sent down before you. Then they live their life, knowing and fearing the hereafter. These people don’t think only of the present. They think of the future. Today will pass away… where will we be tomorrow? These people
firmly work with Akhira in front of them. -‐-‐ And they firmly believe in the hereafter. This constant thinking of the future and the Akhira keeps them from doing haraam things. For such people Allah has glad tidings. These people have found the path. They will Inshallah reach their
desired destination. Allah says -‐-‐ these people are walking on the
guidance that came from their Rabb. Such people will attain success. -‐-‐ And they are the ones who will attain salvation. The ones who have been rightly guided. The مفلح will gain all, everything. They are not only successful in the Dunya but they are also successful in the Akhira. Why is it necessary to read this book?
It is necessary because all other books will only teach us how to attain success of this world. However the Quran will allow us to attain success in this world and in the Akhira. We are all trying to make this world a paradise for ourselves. The Quran makes this place seem like paradise and also makes the hereafter a paradise.
The singular form of this word is مفلح (the one who attains Success in Dunya and Akhira). So what
the Quran is saying is that the result of the متقي is that he is .مفلح What qualities should a person have if they are ?مفلح
Al-‐Huda Juz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 1-‐5
Momina Mateen The qualities of a .فالحح

What does a farmer do?
-‐ He digs -‐ He tears the earth using certain tools. -‐ He needs to water the earth so that it becomes soft, allowing him to easily dig it. -‐ He then takes care of his land, so the crops start growing. -‐ Then when extra things grow, he cuts them. -‐ Throughout this procedure he is always thinking, working, worrying, he’s taking care and he’s
alert.
When you plant a seed… the first thought you have in your mind is “Will it grow or not?” then when it does you think “Will it bear fruits or not?” etc. Until you harvest the fruit. Until you don’t get the benefit
out of your hard work, you will take care of it. You know that متقي is one who is careful, cautious.
Just imagine… متقي + .فالحح
Qualities of the متقي
Where is Imaan? In the heart.
1-‐ Believing in the unseen. Now if you think about it a فالحح is not certain until he has Imaan or trust or if he is not confident. If the ground or weather is not suitable, the فالحح will not plant his crops. He puts the seed into the ground with his own hand but he is not certain of whether or not it will grow. What is this in a way? Imaan bill Ghaib ( Faith in the unseen)
2-‐ What is shown in this? Putting in the effort to do something. Imagine yourself praying, you’re standing, sitting, prostrating, bending, etc. Similarly, a farmer, a فالحح is also putting in a similar kind of effort. He is standing, bending, sitting continuously. He doesn’t stand around thinking and wondering or hoping. But he puts in the physical effort to achieve what he desires. Striving for what you want is a must.
Al-‐Huda Juz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 1-‐5
Momina Mateen
3-‐ -‐-‐ When they do this, they are fulfilling the rights of Allah’s slaves. Whatever a farmer grows, he doesn’t use all of it for himself. Some of what he has grown is given to the people or maybe occasionally a bird or insect has eaten it. And some has been saved in order to grow again. 1 farmer but look how many are benefit from him? Now
comparing a farmer’s life to a متقي life. A متقي life should also be beneficial. Beautiful Hadith about Sadqah: In the mosque of the Prophet (SAW), the Prophet (SAW) offered congregational prayer. After praying the people were still sitting in the Masjid, that a person came. But since the congregational prayer had already been offered, he stood at a distance and began to offer his prayers himself. On seeing this the Prophet said, is there anyone who can do Sadqah on him? (And how is that to be done? By offering Prayers with him.) A man stood up. And who was this? Hazrat Abu Bakr and offered prayers with him. This was a Sadqah. How did he help do Sadqah?
i. When 2 people pray together it becomes easier. ii. Praying in congregation gives you 27 times more reward.
So now we know that a متقي has a spirit of giving. For example seeing a poor person and helping them. What else comes in Sadqah?
-‐ Smiling to your brother is also Sadqah. -‐ Saying a good word is also Sadqah. -‐ Offering prayer with someone -‐ Give way to others. -‐ Help someone out -‐ If someone cannot write, you teach them to write. -‐ Someone cannot understand something, you make her understand.
4-‐ -‐-‐ متقي believes in what is sent to you (The Prophet). Good farmers take benefits from the experience of the farmers before them. There are some farmers who are uneducated and are living their daily routine. And there are some farmers who have every kind
of information. You cannot just read books and become a good farmer but , by the previous experiences. So a successful person is one who believes that his knowledge is not enough and he benefits from the experience of people before him in the same field.
5-‐ -‐-‐ A متقي works with the Akhira in front of him. Like a farmer who sets a target on how much he wants to achieve in a set period of time. The farmer also ensures that the growing conditions are favorable to the type of crop he wants to grow. A farmer first thinks, then works in the best way and then achieves the best result.
You have started reading the Quran—what qualities should you have?
Al-‐Huda Juz 1: Al Baqarah Ayah 1-‐5
Momina Mateen
1) -‐-‐ What is the Quran? . But how? It came down via revelations. You must have trust that this Quran is full of benefit. The one who doesn’t believe and is not certain of this book, that person can never work with interest. Your first quality: I am here to study and I am working hard, and whatever I am being taught, I’m acting upon it. All that I am studying will
give me benefit. Where is the benefit? Behind the curtain of . When that curtain is removed, you will see each moment you spend reading the Quran, trying to understand it. Trying to gain (Quranic) knowledge is greater Ibadah than Nafl prayers. Why? Because it is a Fard (Compulsory).
2) -‐-‐ all the efforts you are putting in. Getting up, writing, walking, and sitting down. All the steps you are taking in this path will lead you to success. The money spend in this path will become a Sadqah for you. Money is not an obligation. Just look at what you have and your brother does not have, bodily strength, intellect, knowledge. What do you have that he doesn’t, so that you can give it to him.
3) -‐-‐ accept whatever you find out about the Quran or Sunnah. We cannot say we believe in the Quran but not the Hadith.
4) -‐-‐ respecting and honoring the good things of the previous messengers, their teachings, their guidance. We should follow all the teachings of any of the Prophets.
5) -‐-‐ How many times do you actually ever think that you will return to your Rabb? You need to be Akhira-‐oriented.
Always think that what I am doing, I will get the reward for it tomorrow. Always think what benefits you will get after doing such and such deeds. Never think you will not get reward for any of your work, for
example house work. Ensure that you do not remind anyone of your favors. A متقي always focuses on what he has. Because if he focuses on what he doesn’t, he will never be able to help anyone. If we don’t realize how much we have, then we will always complain. The spirit of giving, therefore, would not develop.
