“We have been told that our home will be “Th e Heroes for Humanity Build”. Th is means more to our family than you can imagine,” says Habitat partner family mom, Erin Brockett. Both of Erin’s grandfathers were part of World War I. Her paternal grandfather was a gunner, and her maternal grandfather was a medic, both in the UK. Her brother is a retired Regi-mental Sergeant Major.
When the Brockett family of four and soon to be fi ve, say they have had their ups and downs they sure have. Charles and Erin have two children, Peridaen born No-vember 2011 and Alice, who is their resident drama queen, was born August 2013.
As the family was expand-ing, Charles was laid off and searched for any work available, taking any tempo-rary job to keep the family’s head above water while Erin searched here and there for something that would work with the specifi c needs of the children. Approximately a year later Charles was off ered a full-time position at Liberty Freezers and he continues to work there as a fork lift operator.
Erin started driving school bus and really found a niche that she adored! A few months into the job she found out they were expect-ing another baby. A third child is nothing short of a miracle. Th ey were told they
had a one in a million shot of potentially having another.
When a friend and volun-teer for Habitat for Human-ity suggested they apply for a house, at fi rst the family wasn’t sure this was even an option. Th ey assumed Habitat built for families in far worse situations than theirs, but with a little bit of humility they looked into the criteria and found they fi t perfectly! When they got a letter saying their application was ap-proved there were tears of joy.
Th e Brockett family currently lives in a small townhouse where they have had nothing but hard times. Maintenance issues have not been well cared for; there have been several water leaks that have left mould growing on the walls of the bathroom and master bedroom. Charles is very allergic to mould and the children constantly seem to be sick with colds and runny noses. Erin has also had a cough since she was 12 weeks pregnant. Th e current living conditions are not a safe or healthy environment.
When asked what this op-portunity of homeownership means to the family, they asked the question: “How do
you explain to someone what it means to have a home of your very own when you nev-er expected it to be possible? For us it means knowing that if something is wrong we can fi x it. It means we can have a backyard where our children can play safely. Th ey can grow a garden and we can teach them the importance of nurturing growth. It means a place for the children to explore. It means not having to worry if our son’s room is too cold, or too hot or if we are going to be sick in the morning. It means not having to worry if the cost of rent is going up and if we can aff ord to pay it this month.”
Erin has found herself asking how to thank the people who risk their lives every single day to build her family a home. “We are well aware that our freedom, our safety and security do not come lightly. We are deeply grate-ful and very humbled by this experience. Words just don’t remotely give us a way to say how we feel about this opportunity or the build. Th e meaning goes very deeply and we thank you from the very bottom of our hearts.”
“Those who are foolish enough to believe that they can change the world are
usually the ones that do.

Meet the Brockett Family!
Our Women Build on Edmonton Street is in the very fi nishing stages! We are so pleased with how well this build has progressed, and we have our fantastic Women Build teams to thank! Without the fundraising and building support of these amazing 400 ladies, we would not be complet-ing this home! We hope to see all of you at the Dedication for the Young family home on Saturday, April 18 at 11am. Looking forward to our next builds in 2015. We plan to kick start our two builds for the Lusk and Baw Paw families in Woodstock this May. Summer will mark the beginning of our Heroes for Humanity and other two London builds on Forbes Street. Th is Fall we plan to build in the Listowel and Ingersoll communities. Please stay tuned for updates on these builds!

Stratford Addition We are building
an addition onto our Stratford ReStore in the hopes of increasing sales space, and in turn, profi ts which will allow us to build more homes for local low-income families! We are constructing a covered area 85' x 20' and it will be an engineered post, beam and truss construction with a metal roof. It will look similar to a pavilion you see at a park with open sides and a roof. We are building throughout the month of April (Mondays through Saturdays), and we could really use the help of both skilled and unskilled volunteers! If interested in helping with this project please contact Jamie Lee.
Call for Donations Doing a Spring cleaning? Make sure to keep your local ReStore in mind for all of your home and construction products! Your donations cover our administrative costs, ensuring that every donated dollar can go directly towards our building program.
