They ;wepllhe board by winning Ihe Grand Siam, Triple Crown and Ihe Calcutta Cup. The spin-off of Iheir lotal Rugby, preache<1 sa fervently by their coach Des Seabrook, was vital ta England as they provided seven members, including Ihe caplain Bill Beaumont, of the national side.

Thorn helpeel also ta inspire a major inlernational suceess as they helped wilh the four Divisional matches against Ihe ew Zealand louring team.

The North - like Lancashire - made canny use of the extra money. They were the only side ta beal the Ali Blacks. The 21-9 score at O lley on November 17 represented Ihe biggesl hiding New Zealand had ever suffered in England.

Bul Thorn's biggest conlribution was ta the County Championship. The final between Lancashire and Glouceslershire al the picturesque Vale of Lune ground on February 9 was one of the high lights of a memorable season.

This season, in addition ta Ihe Thorn Counly Championship, There will be the Thorn Divisional Championship. This compelition was suspended for Ihe last Iwo years because of touring sides. It will start on December 13 when the North, the holders, meellhe South and Soulh West and London lackle the Midlands. Ali four teams will be in action a week later at Twickenham ta decide the 1, 2, 3, 4 arder.
