    TCoL

At the time the BUZZ went to print, TCoL was temporily closed. All activities and programs listed were based on assumption TCoL reopened. Please check the TCoL website (www.tcol.org) for the most current information. Some activities and pro-grams may have been postponed or canceled. We will make every attempt to keep you informed of current circumstances.

This is why pre-registration and updated participation sheets are so critical.

Helpful reminders: · 10 participants per activity/program. (21 for line dancing) · 4 maximum for billiards. · All participants must preregister for classes by phone or online. · Sign up a minimum of 2 days in advance. · Classes will be offered on a first register, first reserve basis. · Participants can only participate in one class per day so our programs can reach more people. · If a participant registers after the limit is met, that person will get first priority for the next time

that activity is held. · Social distancing of 6 feet between participants (per floor signage) required. · We are following the statewide mask mandate. If you forget yours, TCoL will provide one. · Drinking fountains will be UNAVAILABLE for use. · Bottle water, soda, snacks and candy will be available for purchase. · Coffee and popcorn will NOT be offered. · A maximum of 4 people in the elevator.

  • TCoL Temporary Closing

4 | The Thompson Center on Lourdes

  • Greetings from Liz

    November 2020 | 5

    Meet our new Board President

    Dear TCoL Family,

HOPE – is my new word for 2020. The Wikipedia definition of HOPE is “an optimistic state of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes with respect to events and circumstances in one's life or the world at large.” We certainly need HOPE in our lives this year!

As you are probably aware by now, the Thompson Center on Lourdes closed temporarily on Friday, October 9th at 4:00pm. This decision was heart breaking, because so many of our participants rely on our programs and activities. But, throughout the Fox Valley Region, Public Officers are issuing a Public Health Emergency, Covid-19 Alert. Due to the influx in COVID positive tests, public health officials are not able to notify cases and their contacts in a timely manner and hospitals are implementing their emergency plans. Organizations are being asked to take action to stop the spread. TCoL wants to be a good corporate citizen to ensure we are doing our part to flatten the curve. We made this proactive decision because your health and safety are our number one priority.

TCoL will be monitoring the accepted metrics the Health Agencies are using to measure COVID spread. When the measures are acceptable to Public Health Officials that the COVID infection has flattened TCoL will reopen.

So, you may be wondering why we are publishing “The Buzz”. Our “HOPE” is that we will be able to resume activities and programming sometime in November. We will keep you posted via our website www.thetcol.org, Facebook page, emails and our phone recording.

We “HOPE” you stay safe and healthy during these unprecedented times. And we “HOPE” to see you soon at TCoL!!

My time in the Navy by Mickey Parker On April 21,1953 (during Korean War) I went to Philadelphia, PA, with my aunt to join the Navy so that I could go to nursing school. I passed the physical, but had to be taken home to get my mother’s permission. After I was sworn in, I was informed no one was being accepted into nursing

training. “Welcome to the Navy!” I boarded the bus with several other girls and went to the boot camp at Bainbridge, MD. There I joined the recruit drill team practicing daily. Upon finish-ing boot camp, I was transferred to the Hospital Corp School. That is where I met my husband. He spent 20 cents on our first date going to the movies.

After graduation and two weeks leave, I was transferred to National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. There I was assigned to Ward 126 and cared for dependent women, many who were diagnosed with hodgkins disease. My brother was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital so I was able to visit with him frequently at dances where he often played the drums.

Because I was expecting my first child, I was discharged on June 23, 1954. The next twenty years were spent on the East Coast with my husband who stayed in the military. We had four children. In 2015 I moved to Appleton.

My fondest memories in the military are working with the people and singing and talking with them to lift their spirits while they were recovering.
