Winter Writings

Sandra McDonald  Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.   His house is in the village though;   He will not see me stopping here   To watch his woods fill up with snow.    My little horse must think it queer   To stop without a farmhouse near   Between the woods and frozen lake   The darkest evening of the year.    He gives his harness bells a shake   To ask if there is some mistake.   The only other sound’s the sweep   Of easy wind and downy flake.    The woods are lovely, dark and deep,   But I have promises to keep,   And miles to go before I sleep,   And miles to go before I sleep.

There's a certain Slant of light by Emily Dickinson

There's a certain Slant of light, Winter Afternoons – That oppresses, like the Heft Of Cathedral Tunes –  Heavenly Hurt, it gives us – We can find no scar, But internal difference – Where the Meanings, are –  None may teach it – Any – 'Tis the seal Despair – An imperial affliction Sent us of the Air –  When it comes, the Landscape listens – Shadows – hold their breath – When it goes, 'tis like the Distance On the look of Death –

Earthquake in Albania, and How THS is Helping

the Cause

By Mel Shkrepi  In the early hours of November 26, 2019, the Balkan country of Albania was hit with a 6.4 magnitude earthquake, leaving 21 dead and 600 injured. Damage was recorded all along its Adriatic coastline, with many building collapses, especially in many rural towns and cities along the western parts of Albania such as Lezhë, Thumanë, and the major port city of Durrës. Shortly after the earthquake and its aftershocks passed, emergency teams from Kosovo, Greece, and Italy sent volunteers to help with the damage and finding people all over the area that have been trapped in the rubble. However, it wasn’t just one earthquake that caused such a tragedy, but multiple aftershocks with magnitudes of about 5.9 and 5.4 that caused even more damage to these communities already hit. With this being said, a lot of damage was done to some of these already poverty stricken towns, causing a lot of needs from these areas. This earthquake has hit home for many Albanian-Americans in the country, and even here at THS, leading action to be taken by the Albanian community here at Thomaston. THS Student Council has already made their efforts to support and help this cause by collecting money from students and faculty to send to an organization collecting donations for this cause. Any donations, including the smallest amounts of change help and are much appreciated while the whole country is going through this period of tragedy.
