omas Moore Feed is proud to be the official feed of the Texas Ornithological Society FEATURED BIRD: Northern Cardinal Bright red with a pointed head crest and black bib, male cardinals are always a welcome sight at bird feeders. Cardinals are year-round residents in the eastern two-thirds of Texas. Both male and female cardinals sing almost year-round. Common calls include “cheer cheer cheer”, “whit-chew whit-chew whit-chew” and “purty purty purty”. Cardinals eat seeds, fruit, and insects, and are easily attracted to bird feeders, especially those containing sunflower seeds. FEATURED SEED: Black Oil Sunflower Seed Black oil sunflower seed is a popular entrée among a wide variety of backyard birds, and most birds will at least sample the seeds even if they prefer other foods. When compared to striped sunflower seeds, black oil seeds are meatier and have a higher oil content, giving birds more nourishment and calories in every bite. Black oil seeds also have thinner shells, making them easier for small birds to open. Birds that will regularly eat sunflower seeds include: Northern cardinals, Tuſted titmice, Mourning doves, Gray catbirds, Evening grosbeaks, Common and boat-tailed grackles, purple and house finches. FEATURED FEEDER: Hopper Feeder is kind of feeder protects seeds fairly well against the weather and bird droppings. Hopper feeders are attractive to most feeder birds, including Finches, Jays, Cardinals, Buntings, Grosbeaks, Sparrows, Chickadees, and Titmice. Many hoppers can hold enough seed to last for several days, which make them very convenient for people, but dangerous for birds if the seed within gets wet and is not removed. Feeders should be cleaned regularly to ensure bacteria and fungus are not present. Hopper feeders can be mounted on a pole or suspended. THOMAS MOORE FEED January-March 2016 Wild Bird Newsletter Winter is a great time to feed birds! Natural food supplies are low and seed provides a great source of nutrients for birds. Many of the migratory birds in the winter prefer to feed on the ground like Chipping Sparrows, Field Sparrows, and Dark-eyed Juncos. Make sure to provide seed both in a ground feeder or in a hopper feeder so all of the birds can enjoy your seed! TMF SEASONAL SPOTLIGHTS UPCOMING EVENTS ese are a few of the upcoming events in Texas.
