ACADEMIC BOOSTERS AWARDS

RECEPTION

Tuesday, May 31, 2016

6:00 ~ 8:00 p.m.

Thomas Jefferson High School

Academic Boosters, Inc. TJ Academic Boosters actively supports our outstanding academic teams in their various

pursuits. Some 20 academic teams compete in local, state, national, and sometimes even

international events. Because financial resources are not available from Fairfax County

Public Schools, Academic Boosters asks families to join the organization by contributing

tax-deductible donations at various levels. This allows Academic Boosters to cover

teacher travel expenses and help with student registration fees when possible. Even with

this support, academic team members pay for their own travel, room, meals, and other

related expenses.

TJ Academic Teams include: Biology Olympiad, Botball (Robotics team), Certamen,

Chemistry Team, Chess Team, Computer Team, Forensics, Future Problem Solvers,

Japan Bowl, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Math Team, Model United Nations, Physics Team,

Policy Debate, Public Forum Debate, Quiz Bowl (“It’s Academic”), Rocketry Club,

Rubik’s Cube Team, Science Bowl, Science Olympiad, and Student Congress, among

others. Information about most of the teams is provided on the Academic Boosters

website: http://academics.tjhsst.edu/aboosters.

Academic Boosters gathers information about team accomplishments for the

TECHCETERA newsletter, recognizes family memberships, promotes Academic Teams

at orientations and open houses, and organizes a year-end Team Recognition Ceremony.

Our TJ Academic Teams’ achievements have always been a source of pride for the

entire TJHSST community and are a cornerstone of our national reputation for academic

excellence. Everyone is welcome (and encouraged!) to join TJ Academic Boosters

by making a donation, either by check or online through Paypal. Funding comes

primarily from family memberships; it is supplemented with food and merchandise sales.

100% of the money raised is used to support TJ’s academic teams. Recommended

donation levels start at $50 per year. THANK YOU to all of our wonderful Teacher

Sponsors, for without them, we would not have Academic Teams. THANK YOU to all

who have supported TJ Academic Boosters this school year!

** We look forward to seeing you all again next year **

REMEMBER it's never too early to join TJ Academic Boosters for the upcoming school

year!

USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) Competition, sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE):

Ninety-two students competed in the USABO Open Exam in February. Among them, the following students qualified as semifinalists: Neeraj Prasad, Ashwin Srinivasan, Kevin Le, Katie Tam, Tiger Zhang, Kavya Kopparapu, Richard Pan, Chelsea Li, Stella Yang, Tina Tarashi, Sneha Ravi, William Li, James Ma, Jainam Modh, Anish Karpurapu, Akhil Goel, Paarth Jain, and Anthony Kang.

Neeraj Prasad and Ashwin Srinivasan qualified for the 2016 USABO National Finals. Ashwin will attend as one of the 20 Finalists competing at Marymount University, from May 29 to June 10. Neeraj has instead accepted an invitation to attend the Research Science Institute (RSI) program at MIT. The four top students at the Nationals will then advance to compete in the International Biology Olympiad in Vietnam this summer.

Neeraj and Ashwin, along with Tiger Zhang, achieved the CEE “Recognition of Academic Excellence” for scoring in the top 50 on the 2016 USABO Semifinal.

University of Toronto National Biology Competition:

TJHSST placed first among international schools for the third consecutive year in the University of Toronto National Biology Competition.

There were 67 participating schools (and 1100 eligible contestants) this year from outside of Canada. TJ had 61 students participate.

Placing in the top 1% (again) were Neeraj Prasad, Ashwin Srinivasan, Tiger Zhang (for a fourth time), and Aadith Vittala. These four, together with Aditya Sarkar (20th place) are the members considered to constitute our school’s “team” this year by the University’s competition committee.

Also ranked within the top 54 were Akshay Balaji, Jeffrey Liu, James Ma, Cecelia Chu, Katie Tam, Anish Karpurapu, Kavya Kopparapu, and Vandana Subramanian. These students are considered to be International Biology Scholars by the test committee.

Botball

Two TJ Botball Robotics Teams competed in the Greater

DC/Virginia Botball Tournament (www.botball.org) on Saturday,

April 23.

Both TJ teams finished 1-2 in the Double Elimination round. The Senior Team won 1st

Place in the Alliance Round. The Freshman-Sophomore Team won a Judge’s Choice

award for “Best Use of Sensors.”

Senior Team: Risheek Rajolu (team leader), Nikhil Daga, Chris Jiang, Thomas Lai,

Jaden Lee, Nipun Mallipeddi, Mark Putman, Josh Rutzick, Suhas Sastry, Arvind

Srinivasan, Abhilaash Velamati

Freshman-Sophomore Team: Arya Saravanan (team leader), Jun Chong, Vasil

Iakimovitch, Rushil Joshi, Justin Lasker, Sarkis Ter Martirosian, Sohail Mohanty,

Vinay Mummareddy, Lance Nguyen, Yash Shekar, Yuki Oyama, Rohan Valluri.

Each team has two robots equipped with a CPU and motors, cameras, and sensors. The

game board is different each year. This year, the robots scored points by collecting,

moving, and sorting colored poms which were placed on the surface of the board and on

a raised platform. Winning robots were able to navigate precisely and consistently in tight

spaces. Final scores are determined by points awarded from all four parts of the

competition:

- project documentation - an oral presentation about the teams’ robots and strategy - average score in the seeding rounds - final position in the double elimination tournament

Certamen (Latin) This year, TJ Latin attended the 62nd Annual National Junior

Classical League (NJCL) Convention, hosted by Trinity University in

San Antonio, Texas. TJ's performance was exceptional on all counts

and competitions, academic tests, creative and graphic arts alike.

The Virginia Junior Classical League (VJCL) Convention, hosted in Richmond, saw

similarly exceptional results in all fields. The TJ delegation as a whole reclaimed 1st place

for Spirit and once again won 1st place for Scrapbooking. TJ attendees' scores were also

scattered thoroughly across the top ten placings for many academic tests, and many

awards were earned in creative and graphic arts.

The VJCL offered an Academic Decathlon in addition to other academic tests. Senior

Ryan Golant scored first place on the rigorous exam, earning $1000 and a stupendous

victory!! Freshman Alyssa Nash earned the coveted Hugh Himwich Grammar Award for

achieving the highest overall score on the grammar test. The future looks bright for TJ

Latin!

This year's Certamen season was successful for TJ teams of all levels. TJ Latin's

performance was impressive, attending the VJCL Kickoff, the Classical Cottage, the

Riverbend, the Flint Hill, and the State Final Certamina. After a two-year hiatus due to

construction, TJ was able to host the renowned Thomas Jefferson Certamen, where teams

from all over the Virginia-DC area came to compete. The event was largely successful

owing to the combined effort of the entire TJ Latin club.

Here are highlights from our Certamen season:

• The Latin I team, consisting of Freshmen Matvey Yutin, Christopher Bi, Alyssa Nash, and James Kuang, proved their stunning ability by placing 2nd in the Riverbend Certamen early in the year, and the team consisting of Matvey Yutin, Thomas Porter, Alyssa Nash, and James Kuang further augmented their success by placing 2nd in the difficult Flint Hill Certamen; their impressive performance will be a firm foundation for future teams.

• The Latin II A team, made up of Minyoung Hwang, Gwen Jacobson, Alan Zheng and John Kim, also finished 2nd at the Flint Hill Certamen, while the Latin II B team, Shreya Vinjamuri, Maddie Old, and Colleen Choi, placed in the top 6.

• The Latin III team, Kevin Le, John Erskine, Natalie Chin, Claire Cofield, and LeeYung Chang put on a spectacular performance at Flint Hill, earning 1st place in one of the most difficult Certamina of the year.

• Lastly, the Upper Level A Team posted strong results throughout the year, earning 2nd place at the Kickoff Certamen with a team comprised of Arjun Guidroz, Junyoung Hwang, Milana Wolff, and Ryan Golant. A team of Junyoung Hwang, Bill Tang, Ryan Golant, and Kristen Meyers later asserted themselves

once again by earning 2nd place at the Flint Hill Certamen.

The wheel of time goes around and around and has come full circle back to the summer.

This July, TJ Latin will attend the 63rd annual NJCL Convention at Indiana University in

Bloomington, Indiana. Twenty-two students will be in attendance with Ms. Conklin

leading our flock! TJ Certamen players are trying out for the Virginia state team, and we

hope for all the TJ students to once again show their skill and bring glory to the Virginia

Delegation.

Finally, the team gives the greatest thanks to Ms. Conklin and Ms. Lister, our

teachers and sponsors. Without their support, effort, and infinite patience, TJ Latin

would be far less than what it is today. Our Certamen Coordinators too merit recognition

– Ryan Golant, Arjun Guidroz, and Junyoung Hwang – for their devotion to the

cause and guidance. Last and far from least, thanks is given to all of TJ Latin's parents,

without whose cooperation, we could not have achieved all that has been accomplished.

This year, FPS underwent a big change; our long-time sponsor, Mrs. Carpenter, the previous librarian at TJ, moved to a new school. It was into this big void that Mrs. Glover stepped to become our new sponsor. She has done a phenomenal job; under her guidance, the club has not only been run smoothly, but has grown to the point that we’ve needed to move out of the library and into the Einstein commons to accommodate everyone. Thank you again to all of the officers who contributed their time, effort, and enthusiasm this year!

President: Jenny Zhu Vice President: Isaac Iyengar Secretary: Minjoo Kang Treasurer: Saroj Chintakrindi Co-Publicists: Mihir Patel and Frank Tian Competition Chair: Nathan Chen Novice Coordinator: Dean Zhang

Mrs. Glover would also like to extend a warm thank-you to Tony Asiamah for his tireless support in helping to organize for Mrs. Glover’s first FPS road trip.

Thank you, Academic Boosters, for your support!

Policy Debate Team This year’s Policy Debate season was amazing. The debaters showed incredible perseverance and growth throughout the season thanks to our phenomenal varsity members and new enthusiasts.

The 2015–2016 officers were:

Co-Captains: Jay Pan and Aneesh Susarla

Teaching Coordinators: Alison Li and Christine Li

Treasurer: Elizabeth Hu

Publicist: Niharika Vattikonda

TJ Policy Debate had a tremendous season this year, gathering achievement after

achievement. The team of Aneesh Susarla and SungJoon Won came in 1st place at the

Virginia High School League Regional and State Policy Debate Tournaments. They will

be competing in the National Catholic Forensic League National Policy Debate

tournament in Sacramento, California on May 29th this year. To top it all off, TJ Policy

Debate were also the winners of the Washington Arlington Catholic Forensic League

(WACFL) Sweepstakes.

Throughout the season, TJ Policy Debate also participated in some prestigious national-

and regional-level tournaments.

To start off the national-level competitions for TJ Policy Debate, the team of Gulnaz

Sayed and Zulekha Tasneem went to the biggest national-level tournament in the first

semester at Glenbrooks in Chicago. Although this was their first national-level

tournament together, they did amazingly with a 3-3 record in the JV division.

The Broad Run Spartan Invitational was a national non-travel tournament. The team of

Gulnaz Sayed and Zulekha Tasneem won 1st place in Varsity and swept the 2nd and 1st

place speakers, respectively. The team of SJ Kachru and Aaraj Vij won 1st place in the

JV division while Sam Dasari and Katie Zhang won 2nd and 3rd place speakers,

respectively, in the JV division. TJ Debate teams swept the entire tournament, placing 1st

in Policy, Public Forum, and Lincoln Douglas Debate.

The Pennsbury Falcon Invitational was the first travel tournament for some of our first-

year debaters. The team of Ankit Agrawal and Sean Ji made it to the Semifinals, and SJ

Kachru and Aaraj Vij, made it to the Octafinals. Aaraj Vij was also the 8th place

speaker. This was a major accomplishment for both teams because the members were all

first-year debaters.

At the 42nd Annual Harvard National Forensics Tournament, all three teams that

participated advanced to the Elimination rounds. Elizabeth Hu and Jessie Shen made it

to the Octafinals, while Gulnaz Sayed and Zulekha Tasneem, and first-year debaters,

Ankit Agrawal and Sean Ji, made it to the Double-Octafinals. Sean Ji also placed 7th

out of 128 competitors in the JV division.

These tournaments signify that TJ Policy Debate has three teams—sophomores Gulnaz

Sayed and Zulekha Tasneem, Ankit Agrawal and Sean Ji, and freshmen SJ Kachru

and Aaraj Vij—ready to take national and regional-level tournaments by storm in the

next few years.

To start off a great year at WACFL 1, in the Varsity division, Aneesh Susarla and Jay

Pan won 1st place as a team, and won 2nd and 1st place speaker awards, respectively,

while the team of Gulnaz Sayed and Niharika Vattikonda came in 6th place.

WACFL 2 was where many of the first-year debaters met their calling. In the Varsity

division, Stella Yang and Sungjoon Won came in 2nd place as a team and Elizabeth Hu

and Jessie Shen placed 5th as a team and won 1st and 3rd place speaker awards,

respectively. In their first tournament, the team of Ankit Agrawal and Sean Ji won 5th

place in the JV division. In the Novice division, Kevin Cho and Timothy Han won 5th

place, and Timothy also won the 3rd place speaker award.

Many of our debaters qualified for the Metro-finals at WACFL 3 this year. In Varsity, the

team of Gulnaz Sayed and Zulekha Tasneem came in 1st place. In the JV division, the

team of Kevin Cho and Timothy Han won 2nd place, and Sean Ji won the 2nd place

speaker award. In the Novice division, the teams of Reena Medavarapu and Alice

Nolan placed 1st, Shreyas Angara and Abhishek Mullapudi placed 3rd in their first ever

debate tournament, and SJ Kachru and Aaraj Vij placed 6th. Abhishek Mullapudi also

won the 1st place speaker award, while Akshith Peyyala won 3rd place.

The last tournament to qualify for the Metro-Finals was WACFL 5. There, the team of

Victoria Yang and Danny Wang came in 3rd, while the team of Vishnu Nair and Min

Kang came in 6th place. Furthermore, Danny Wang won the 1st place speaker award and

SJ Kachru placed 3rd. This season saw 10 and 8 individuals qualify for the Varsity and

JV divisions, respectively, of the Metro-finals.

The WACFL Metro-finals signified the end for most of our debaters’ spectacular seasons.

In the Varsity division, Aneesh Susarla and SungJoon Won placed 5th and Zulekha

Tasneem and Gulnaz Sayed placed 8th, and Kevin Cho and Timothy Han placed 6th

overall, in the JV Division.

None of this would have been possible without the hard work put in by our dedicated seniors and officers, and by our Coach/Sponsor, Dr. Lennon. We are immensely proud of our debaters. Thank you so much for a wonderful year!

Quizbowl

Captains: Ryan Golant and Michael Yue

Tournament Directors: Joanna Gerr and Wendy Yin

Treasurer: Ruyan Zhang

Secretary: Aditya Sarkar

Public Relations Officer: Rohan Hegde

TJ Quizbowl had another successful year, thanks to the generous support of Academic Boosters and our two coaches, Mr. Laffey and Mr. Loo.

TJ’s teams were very successful at state and regional tournaments this year. The team of Ryan Golant, Michael Yue, Saurav Pattanayak, Ruyan Zhang, Rohan Hegde, and Fred Zhang were Region 5A State Champions at the Virginia High School League Scholastic Bowl finals in February! Ryan Golant was also individually honored as a member of the All-State Team. In order to make it to the State Championship, TJ teams first played in the District and the Regional competitions, at which they were undefeated. TJ sent two teams to Wilmington, Delaware, to participate in BMAD, where they competed in the toughest field of any tournament this year before the Nationals. TJ’s A team, comprising of Ryan Golant, Michael Yue, Rohan Hegde, Grant Li, and Alex Howe returned as 1st place champions, defeating the best team in the country in several matches! Then, in March, TJ participated in the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Virginia State Championships at UVA, where the A team consisting of Ryan Golant, Michael Yue, Saurav Pattanayak, and Alex Howe also won 1st place. TJ’s B team, consisting of Ruyan Zhang, Aditya Sarkar, Andrew Wang, and Fred Zhang came in 2nd, resulting in the first time a school won both first and second places in the history of the Virginia state championships!

Our “It’s Academic” TV show team also had success this year. The team of Ryan Golant, Michael Yue, and Rohan Hegde defeated teams from across the region to progress to the playoff round. The first round was broadcast on NBC4 on January 24th, and the playoff round was broadcast on May 14th.

In addition to these achievements, we had great success in our regular season tournaments, competing at Johns Hopkins University, Georgetown University, University of Maryland, Centennial High School, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Wilmington Charter School. Members Ryan Golant, Michael Yue, Aditya Sarkar, Rohan Hedge, Alex Howe, Grant Li, Andrew Wang, Wendy Yin, Ruyan Zhang, Saurav Pattanayak, Fred Zhang, Kevin Wang, Benjamin Xu, James Kuang, Liam Rathke, Nishanth Anand, Akhil Rekulapelli, Adam Ardeishar, William Park, Aaditya Singh, Julia Zhou, Ratan Kaliani, Mahesh Menon, Alex Peng, Sammy

Tavassoli, Naman Rai, Amit Joshi, Shreya Kurdakar, Christopher Bi, and Rayaan Malhotra represented the TJ teams at these tournaments. We were thrilled to have such a great turnout this year!

On December 13th, we successfully hosted TJMST, our first middle school tournament, in which 12 teams from Northern Virginia participated. We also hosted our annual high school tournament, TJIAT, on April 2nd. The tournament, which was attended by 19 teams, was gold-certified by the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE). Many club members volunteered to help staff these tournaments, which were run by Tournament Directors Joanna Gerr and Wendy Yin as well as coaches Mr. Laffey and Mr. Loo.

Owing to these successes this year, three teams each from TJ Quizbowl qualified for two

national tournaments. The High School National Championship Tournament (HSCNT),

which is run by NAQT, will be held in Dallas, TX, from May 27th to the 29th. Members

Rohan Hedge, Alex Howe, Aditya Sarkar, Andrew Wang, Ruyan Zhang, Michael

Yue, Saurav Pattanayak, Ryan Golant, Grant Li, Wendy Yin, Benjamin Xu, Kevin

Wang, James, Kuang, and Fred Zhang will represent TJ at this tournament. The

National Scholastic Championship (NSC), which is run by PACE, will be held in

Chicago, IL, on June 4th and 5th.

Rubik’s Cube

Every year, the TJ’s Rubik’s Cube Club sends eight

members to participate in the You Can Do the Rubik’s Cube

team competition. Teams compete to solve 25 Rubik’s

Cubes as fast as possible.

This year, the TJ team came in 1st place IN THE WORLD

WITH A TIME OF 1:02.710!

Results over the years:

● 2011: 1st place

● 2012: 1st place

● 2013: 1st place

● 2014: 2nd place ● 2015: 2nd place

● 2016: 1st place

2016 TJ Team Senior Coaches

2016 TJ Team Members:

● Eli Lifland (Senior) ● David Chao (Sophomore) ● Landon Chu (Junior) ● Shreya Wadehra (Sophomore) ● Frank Ding (Sophomore) ● Erick Tian (Freshman) ● Andrew Nam (Freshman) ● Justin Gou (Freshman)

Members of the TJ team first meet through tryouts, which are often hosted in late January.

Candidates are selected on the basis of a combination of speed, which is gauged through

solve times, and teamwork, which is noted through club participation. After the tryout

period, team members spend the next two months practicing together three times a week

before attending the competition!

Additionally, all individual members of the club are encouraged to participate in

competitions hosted by the World Cubing Association. These are official competitions

where people meet other Rubik’s Cube solvers and break records!

The team would like to thank the club sponsor Ms. Christine Conklin for an incredible

amount of work towards keeping the club together, the parent volunteers who graciously

offered to help with transportation, and the club officers Eli Lifland, David Zhao, and

Devin Kim and Catherine Im!

We are incredibly sad that our four-year Senior Members are leaving for college. Their

enthusiasm for TJ Cubing and dedication to teaching new members were outstanding!

Science Bowl

Congratulations to the TJ Science Bowl Team of Ross Dempsey (captain), Ryan Golant, Neeraj Prasad, Franklyn Wang, and Tiger Zhang for their outstanding performances in both the Virginia Regional and the National Science Bowls. The TJ team, coached by Mrs. Sharon Webb, competed in the Virginia Regional Science Bowl in February. The team was undefeated in the Regional matches and secured the Virginia championship. In additional to medals and a cash award, they won an all-expense trip to the National competition in Chevy Chase, MD! The National Science Bowl, sponsored by the US Department of Energy, brought 69 regional champion teams from across the country to the Washington, DC event. The weekend of April 28 through May 2, 2016 was filled with intense competition, outstanding presentations from leading scientists, and DC visits. TJ went undefeated in the round-robin portion of the competition, and won the next two rounds before succumbing to National champion Montgomery Blair. TJ finished tied for 5th place nationally and brought home an additional $1000 cash award for the school. A special thanks and congratulations to our seniors Tiger, Ryan, and captain and 4-year team member Ross!
