On Sunday 27th September, pupils attended a special assembly in honour of International Day of European Languages 2015. We were treated to familiar songs in different languages, watched dances, and listened to a European version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears in French, German and Spanish! Older pupils demonstrated their skills in a variety of different languages and inspired the younger children to learn a new skill. The event concluded with a group rendition of The Macarena, with lyrics. A great time was had by all. Thank you to the MFL department, and to the parent contributors – The Italian Mammas.

Hosn House Captain Campaign The much-awaited House Captain assembly took place on Thursday 1st October. Candidates presented the many reasons why they thought they would be best suited to the role of House Captain, and delivered messages to win votes. Each pupil in Hosn was allowed one vote, and the numbers are being tallied before the winner is revealed in a whole school Assembly. The campaign has been energetic, focused yet friendly, with a healthy dose of competition. There have been sweets offered, posters made and hung around school and whole House e-mails sent. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the candidates for their hard work and commitment, as well as the way they presented to their peers.

Good luck to all involved!

Ms Jennifer White HMM Hosn

School Prefects The nominations for whole school prefects have been made by all Year 8 pupils in the school, and now staff are giving their votes. Qualities of a Prefect are many and varied, but generally we look for a positive presence, who always tries their best, is mature, responsible and someone thoughtful. The totals will soon be counted, before school Prefects are announced. I look forward to announcing the chosen few in the coming weeks. Best of luck to all!

House Organisation Since the beginning of term, many people have been working hard to streamline the organisation of Hosn as a House; You will know that requests have been made for all pupil items to be named with first and surnames, as well as with ‘Hosn’. In addition, lockers have now been installed for all pupils. Bearing this in mind, I would like to request that padlocks with keys are supplied for all pupils. Please can spare keys be delivered to Hosn HMM for safe keeping. They will be named and kept in a secure location in case of emergencies. These are preferable to the combination locks.

Please can Hosn parents label pupil belongings with not only the name of your child, but also the House. Ideally, a year would also be

included. Thank you, I hope to make the return of lost items quicker! Ms Jennifer White

On Sunday 27th September the pupils of Brighton College engaged in a European Day of Languages. Pupils came dressed in different styles of European dress and outfits and different European languages were heard and celebrated throughout the Prep and Senior school. The day culminated in a lovely presentation by members of the modern foreign language staff and school pupils who gave displays of European dance and traditional stories.

On Sunday 27th September the Jahili House Room was transformed yet again as pupils from Years 3 – 8 filled it with colour in celebration of European Languages Day. So many pupils participated by either wearing the national dress of their chosen European country, or, by wearing the colours of a European flag. Here are just a few highlights! Danielle Facey HMM

On Monday 28th September, Maisie Plant (7 Jahili) opened the High Scorers’ Performance Concert with Intervals of a Third in Italian, which she has been rehearsing with Gretchen Hewitt during her voice lessons. Here’s what Maisie had to say about the performance when I spoke to her about it afterwards: “I’ve been singing in Italian for over five months now – since I started my Grade 1. I thought it would nice to sing in Italian rather than English and I really enjoyed it!” When I asked Maisie how it felt to open the show with her solo, she smiled with enthusiasm and beamed:

“My stomach flipped upside down with the pressure of going first, but I rose to the challenge of opening the show and loved every second!” We cannot wait to hear Maisie serenade us again in the future and are bursting with Jahili pride for her talent and spirit!

What have Elm, Maple, Oak, Palm and Willow Class been up

to this week..?

In English this week we’ve been reading ‘Michael Recycle’. Michael Recycle is green and keen and we should be too! We can follow in his footsteps by picking up any litter we see lying around. We have also been using Kung Fu punctuation to help us in our writing. In Science we have learnt all about the different parts of a plant and even made our own! We’ve been focusing on 2D and 3D shapes in Maths - this has been so much fun!

Roald Dahl Day was celebrated in the Prep School earlier in the term to coincide with the anniversary of this famous author’s birthday. Year 3 created some amazing Mr Twit Beards, whilst Year 4 undertook a listening task based on ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. In Year 5 and 6 pupils studied Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes and then wrote their own versions of well-known nursery

rhymes.

Year 7 embarked on group work to study the beginning of one of Dahl’s novels of their choice. Studying in detail his unique writing style they then wrote a continuation of his story. Alternatively, pupils looked at ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ and created their own ‘marvellous’ recipes. Year 8

improved their understanding of how Dahl created tension in his short story, ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’. They consolidated their learning by producing a

diary entry from the point of view of Mr Maloney. An educational and fun day was had by all .

Every year special anniversary editions of his books are released.

In 2015 it was the turn of ‘The Twits’ and ‘The Witches’.

Continuation of Roald Dahl’s, Fantastic Mr. Fox By Layla Sacranie, Year 7 Down in the valley there were three farmers. The owners of these farms had done well. They were rich men. They were also nasty men. All three of them were about nasty and mean as any men you could meet. Their names were Farmer Boggis, Farmer Bunce and Farmer Bean. Boggis was a chicken farmer. He kept thousands of chickens. He was enormously fat. This was because he ate three boiled chickens smothered with dumplings every day for breakfast, lunch and supper. Bunce was a duck-and-goose farmer. He kept thousands of duck and geese. He was a kind of pot-bellied dwarf. He was so short his chin would have been underwater in the shallow end of any swimming pool in the world. His food was doughnuts and goose-livers. He mashed the livers into a disgusting paste and then stuffed the paste into the doughnuts. This diet gave him a tummy-ache and a beastly temper. Bean was a turkey farmer. He kept thousands of turkeys in an orchard full of apple trees. He never ate any food at all. Instead, he drank gallons of strong cider, which he made from the apples in his orchard. He was as thin as a pencil and the cleverest of them all. Boggis and Bunce and Bean. One fat, one short, one lean. These horrible crooks. So different in looks. Were none less equally mean? That is what the children round about used to sing when they used to see them. There was a narrow dirt track with sharp stones scattered around it. This small path lead to a little cave and in that cave lived the foxes. Mr. Fox was tall and handsome, quite a beautiful creature, but he was mad! Absolutely bonkers! It was not in his ability to take something seriously, unless you count when he was trying to steal from the farmers! Mrs. Fox on the other hand… Well no one really knew her, she was also as beautiful a creature as Mr. Fox but she kept to herself. She was quite mysterious; they made such a strange couple. There were some additions to the family, three little fox cubs just as mysterious as their mother. Mysterious but keen. They were keen to see the farms and trick the farmers, they wanted to be part of the stories their father told them at night…

It was a scorcher of a day and the three farmers had gathered for a drink. Boggis had brought three chickens, Bunce brought goose livered doughnuts and Bean brought three gallons of apple cider. The two evil men were trying to convince Bean into eating something, but they had not succeeded. Later that night Bean had a strange feeling churning inside him. He was craving for something. Food. He was so desperate to chew; he finally wanted to eat something. It was a miracle! Rat a tat tat. “Bunce, Bunce open up!” He shouted. “Come on Bunce, if you don’t open up I will rip out what little hair I have!” “Coming,” Bunce croaked. The door stiffly squeaked open. “What do you want at this time at night? Are you mad or do you go shouting at people every night!” “Bunce I want to try food.” Bunce spluttered but a huge grin grew on his face.” Well what do you want to eat?” He asked. Bean had to think for a while, but then it hit him… “I want to eat the three baby foxes!” “Mmmm,” agreed Boggis,” fox tail stew.” It took them three hours to come up with a plan on how to capture the little foxes. Meanwhile there was drama in the cave. Mrs. Fox had finally agreed to let the foxes visit the farms, “but only for half an hour,” she said. “ No…. one hour, it will take half an hour to get there and back. Plus the farms are not next to each other,” said Mr. Fox. “Ok, fine but you must do at least five head counts,” Mrs. Fox ordered. “Yes, yes fine,” said Mr. Fox, without much care. The next morning the little foxes and Mr. Fox left before Mrs. Fox had woken. It was as hot as yesterday but there was a cool wisp in the air. The first farm was the turkey and apple farm. Mr. Fox spoke to his children in a loud and clear booming voice. “Kids the owner of this farm is called Bean, you don’t have to worry because he does not eat anything.” Mr. Fox had turned and stood to get a better view. He didn’t realise that Bean and Boggis were listening from behind the hedge; they quickly snatched the three terrified foxes and ran into the old shed. Bean put them in a cage while Boggis put the water on to boil. The foxes were screeching and wailing, it was so loud Mr. Fox could hear it. He knew exactly where the foxes had gone, or been taken.

Dear Diary, I am becoming ever so fretful as each minute passes as to how I am going to tell my dear Mary about the problem. It has been going on for over a month! Oh I don’t know how I’ll break it to her, especially with the child…How will she react? Will she be angry? Sad? Or will she just accept it? It’s just that, well…she has been acting strange ever since the child came. She’s been ever so calm, my Mary has: it must be because of the baby. A mist of calmness has been surrounding her as of late; if I were to blow all that calmness out of the window by telling lies, I don’t know what might happen – she might even kill me! No. My Mary wouldn’t do that. My sweet, old Mary…I’ll tell her tomorrow, right after I finish my shift. I don’t know how she’ll take it, especially with her years out-pacing her by a mile – as well as the baby. She will stand strong. I know she will, because she’s my Mary. In Year 4, we have been having lots of fun acting out scenes from our class text ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. The children have been working hard to understand the text using comprehension activities and storyboards for drama.

In Science Fun Club this week pupils worked in teams (Habit 5 synergise) to build a tower which could hold a marble at the top. The pupils had to buy their equipment using Brighton College Science Pennies and they could enter their tower under three different catergories. The tallest tower which had to be free standing, the most cost effective tower or the most creative. The pupils could only use paper, card, straws and cellotape with cellotape retailing at 30p per metre. We had some absolutely fantastic towers although the vast majority of pupils aimed towards the more creative tower rather than the tallest. Great fun as always science squad.
