Lavumisa is a rural and high traffic border townlinking Swaziland and Northern Kwa Zulu Natal.The area has been devastated by drought over thepast 10 years which has left the people in a very

poor state. There is no economic activity hence theunemployment level is high. This has resulted topoverty, sex trade resulting to people dying of AIDSrelated illnesses. A number of efforts have been

put in place to support the vulnerable groups in thetown but all of them are proving to be futile. Thesefactors minimize the efforts to support the peopleliving with HIV, to fight GBV and other relatedproblems in the town and to improve the standardof living





Support groups were established in the townfor the people living with HIV and sex workers.

Provide support and engage them in incomegenerating activities i.e. Car wash and Poultryfarming.

Capacitate them on skills development

Educate on the prevention of HIV and othertransmissible disease

The project is ongoing so that the people

involved are empowered and receive ongoingsupport in order for them to cope with theirHIV status and support both their families andthe affected families.

Support groups\PLWHA’s and Commercial sexworkers, Organizations working on HIV/AIDSrelated issues such as LATICC, MSF, the localclinic have been partnered with.

Both women and men are equally involved inthe project because they have the sameagenda.

Poultry Project- Financial support was sourced

from the Regional Development Fund. Landwas provided by Lavumisa Town Board andAMICAALL assisted in drafting the projectproposal.

Car Wash Project- AMICAALL drafted andpresented a project proposal to Mr. M Webb amissionary from Norway who is also thefounder of NATICC and he provided financial

assistance. All the projects are implemented by members

of the support groups

Drama is sometimes used to popularise theissue because the members of the supportgroups are also trained in drama.

Print media is also used to popularise theissue.ie National Newspapers, Pamphlets

AMICAALL is responsible for M&E both

projects.

The AMICAALL office also conducts visitationsto the projects and assists the group members

in refresher courses and monthly meetings.

AMICAALL & LATICC assisted the groupmembers to formulate a schedule so that they

all participate in the projects. P R

Car Wash Project- LATICC is responsible formonitoring and reporting to the AMICAALL office.

AMICAALL upon receipt of report then take

necessary action i.e. in the purchasing of materialto be used in the car wash.



Members are now having spending money to

buy their basic needs and to support theirfamilies.

Members also support children of other bedridden members or deceased.

Members are now able to educate theirchildren. i.e. transport ,books

Some Members are now volunteers in thedifferent organizations working within the

Women and men involved in the support

groups benefit equally in the sense that theyget money through selling their products andproviding service.

The support group members also support theirfamilies and children of the other memberswho have died and those that are bedridden.

The sustainability of these projects lies in the

hands of the Support Group members and thetwo organisations (AMICAALL,LATICC).

Reliable markets needs to be solicited because

they will also contribute to the sustainability of the projects especially the poultry project.

Support to people is also a remedy because

these support groups support their familiesand other destitute people.

Don't be judgemental to a person without

knowing him or her closely so that you canunderstand reason(s) why he or she is in thatposition.
