Literacy and Topic Week 2 Summer 2 8.6.20
1 Literacy & Topic
Literacy and Topic
This week we are going to continue with our new topic, The
Great Fire of London.
Monday
How do we know about the Great Fire of London? Can you
remember what an eyewitness is? How can an eyewitness help
to explain what happened during the fire?
What sources help us know what happened during the Great Fire?
Samuel Pepys was an eyewitness. He kept a diary which tells us lots about what happened.
Today you are going to be history detectives! An object that helps historians to find out facts about the
past is called a source. Which of these items/sources helps us to know how the fire started?
These sources would give you good information about the Fire - Samuel Pepys’ diary, London Gazette
report from 3rd September 1666, eyewitness statement and the painting of the Great Fire from 1670.
The portrait of King Charles does not help because it does not tell us about what happened in London; the
drawing tells us what parts of London were affected, but not where it started.

Monday pm Physical Activity
Obstacle Course Fun- Your task is to design and make your very own obstacle course in your home or your
garden. You must draw and label your design first and make sure you include all of the equipment you will
need. Then use your design to create your obstacle course. Ask your family to complete the obstacle
course whilst you time them. Who can complete the course in the quickest time? You could even make
medals from tin-foil or any other suitable material and present them to the winner during a winner’s
ceremony.
Here is an example of an obstacle course. You might not have lots of equipment at home or lots of space.
You can adapt your course to suit your space and the equipment you have to use.
