AMERICAN NOTEBOOK

Louisville and Memphis to Compete in ESPN’s Annual Play 4KayESPN’s annual Play 4Kay women’s basketball initiative – in support of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) – will air seven games in a new format across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU on Sunday, Feb. 16. In its eighth year, Play 4Kay is in memory of former NC State head coach Kay Yow, who lost her long, courageous battle with breast cancer. Louisville, ranked fifth in both the AP and USA Today Top 25, will participate in the initiative, and Memphis will be featured in a game on ESPNU on Feb. 16 at 3:30 p.m.

Preseason WNITLouisville will compete in the 2013 Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Cardinals will host Loyola at the KFC Yum! Center on Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. The Preseason WNIT features a three-game guarantee format. The event opens Nov. 8 with first-round games. Second-round games will be played Nov. 10 and 11 and sites will be announced following the first-round results; semifinals will be Nov. 14; and the champion-ship is set for Sunday, Nov. 17. Teams that lose in the first two rounds will play consolation games on the second weekend, Nov. 15-16. All games are hosted by participating schools. The championship game will be nationally televised live in HD on CBS Sports Network at 4 pm ET on Sunday, Nov. 17.

Geno Auriemma to Return as USA Basketball Women’s National Team Head CoachUniversity of Connecticut’s Naismith Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame head coach Geno Auriemma, who guided the USA Basketball Women’s National Team to gold medals at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and 2012 Olympic Games, will return to coach the USA National Team through 2016, USA Bas-ketball announced. Auriemma’s selection was made by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team Steering Committee and approved by the USA Basketball Board of Directors.

With 28-year coaching veteran Auriemma at the helm, the USA Basketball Women’s National Team will compete in the 2014 FIBA World Championship (Sept. 27 - Oct. 5 in Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey), and if the USA qualifies, the 2016 Summer Olympic Games (Aug. 5 - 21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), as well as additional USA training camps and exhibition games.

New HomesSeveral American teams will be showing off new or improved facilities for the 2013-14 season. UCF has a new black-stained court, the only basketball team in the nation to feature a court that color. With the $47 million renovation and expansion of Moody Coliseum moving closer to completion, SMU Athletics revealed a new design that focused on branding the University and SMU Athletics as the Mustangs’ exposure reaches unprecedented. In 2011, the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, named in honor of Memphis women’s athletic pioneer

and athletic administrator Elma Neale Roane, saw reno-vations begin. The $1.3 million Phase I project included a total renovation of the locker room areas for women’s basketball and volleyball, a new student-athlete lounge, a new doctor’s examination area and a coaches’ meet-ing room and locker area. The Phase II renovations were recently completed in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse and have created entirely new athletic training and strength and conditioning facilities that will benefit the Tiger volleyball and women’s basketball programs.

The Last Two StandingThe American Athletic Conference enters 2013-14 with a great deal of momentum after having two teams play for the NCAA title in New Orleans in April. In addition to half the Final Four field and both title game participants, the league also features a team that made it to the NCAA Second Round (USF), three teams that qualified for the WNIT (Memphis, Rutgers, SMU), the top seeded team in its conference tournament last year (SMU) and two conference tournament title game participants (Connecticut, UCF). Six of the 10 teams finished .500 or better last year and four teams finished with 20 wins or more, including Connecticut (35), Louisville (29), USF (22) and SMU (21).

USA Basketball Women’s World University GamesBehind an outstanding defensive performance, the 2013 USA Basketball Women’s World University Games Team never trailed and kept Russia at a distance for most of the second half on its way to claiming the gold medal in the 2013 World University Games with a 90-71 vic-tory at Basket Hall in Kazan, Russia. The USA has won three-consecutive gold medals, and nine overall, at the World University Games.

Connecticut’s Bria Hartley led the charge for the USA, scoring a game-high 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Team-mate Kaleena Mosqueda- added 15 points. The USA limited Russia to just 41.6 percent shooting (27-65 FGs) and 31.4 percent in the first half (11-35 FGs), and forced 20 turnovers, which led to 27 U.S. points. Louisville’s Shoni Schimmel finished the tournament averaging 4.6 points and 3.0 assists in 12.8 minutes per game.

On the Red CarpetThe Louisville women’s basketball team was nominated for a 2013 ESPY for Biggest Upset after the Cardinals defeated Baylor 82-81 in the Sweet 16 of the Oklahoma City Regional. Heading into the game Baylor had won 32 straight games behind the play of Brittany Griner, but Louisville held Griner without a basket for the entire first half. The Bears made a push late in the second half and didn’t lead in the game until Odyssey Sims hit two free throws with 9.1 seconds left. Antonita Slaughter hit seven 3-pointers for 21 points and Shoni Schimmel had five treys. As a team, Louisville was 16-of- 25 to tie the NCAA Championship mark reached by four other teams and make the most ever in the regional semifinals or beyond.
